I got my first ding today accidently. I went to the tanning bed today and they always have a hard candy and towel laying on the bed. I popped the cinnamon hard candy in my mouth without even thinking about it! Still didn't think about it until I got out to the car and my husband said "what are you eating?" My reply "a cinnamon candy". He said "you can't eat that". Then realization finally hit "you're right!!!" So, the lesson for me is I definitely need to be more mindful about what I'm eating instead of just following old habits. I was a little disappointed my ding wasn't a little more worthwhile though. I don't even like cinnamon hard candies very much

I thought something like this could happen so easily. Some things we do as habits without really thinking what we are putting into our mouths. Double bummer it wasn't something you liked.

 1 day down!

Kathy, I did get a little cranky... my husband got snapped at a couple of times last night!

I could see that hard candy thing happening.  I almost grabbed sugarless gum at the check-out and caught myself...now that is going to be hard for me!

I have to admit that last night I made a small bowl of oatmeal, just so I could put a T of honey in it!

I'll have to keep myself in check on that!

I'm sure most of us will have accidental dings.  For me, I suspect it will be going out to eat and ordering diet coke instead of water.  If I go to anything fast food-ish (think pizza or Chik Fil-A), I have a feeling I will order the diet coke without thinking about it

I would not have been happy with a ding on a piece of hard candy, either.  We need to make the dings at least worth it.

1 day down good for me as well..

I see the problem coming later on - when I am out to dinner, or at a holiday party. Day to day life is actually not too bad - it's the binges that usually come in big social settings.

And saying no to umbrella drinks on vacation? Ugh - that will be hard.

I wish I liked coffee, just can't do it.  They had tea, which is what I'd been living off of.  But the iced teas all had sugar in it!  so did the juices...ugh!  tomorrow I finally get to go to trader joes for some "good food".

I just don't know if I can do tea and water all the time!

It's too bad you didn't have any good options at that time, but more and more fast food places have unsweetened iced tea. Also, some even have those little bottles of milk or apple juice, if you don't mind ordering off the kids' menu. Won't help with caffeine though.

Speaking of beverages, I really like Ocean Spray No Sugar Addded 100% juice. They've got a bunch of different "Cran-" flavors (raspberry, pomegranate, blueberry), which keeps it interesting.

I made it through my first day with only a mild headache in the morning around the same time that i would normally drink my first diet Pepsi.  I would typically drink 2 or 3 more diet sodas at work, but instead just drank water and unsweetened tea.  I actually think I could develop a tatse for unsweetened tea.  In the evening I snacked on fruit, raisens, and sunflower seeds.  I feel good about this challenge!

Xcalibur girl just gave you a great idea... ask for 100% juice and vodka drinks.

Sorry to hear about a couple of you who dinged accidentally.  I could totally relate as a few times I went to grab something and then I was like whooooaaa.

I'm not cranky yet -- I was cranky three or four days ago when I started this.  But I have a nasty headache.  I feel my body detoxing.  I should never have binged right before the contest Sunday night.  I just keep telling myself "This too shall soon pass."  That, and I'm drinking lots of water.

Oh, and for all the pundits and scientists that claim there is no difference between natural fructose from fruits and HFCS ... then why the hell do I feel like right now?  Why would we suffer from detox symptoms when we are still putting natural sugar into us?  WHY ... cause processed sugara and natural sugar are two different animals.  Lying bastards

I had a raging headache last night when I got home from my swim. I figured it was from the stress of the day, but I actually think it might have been from lack of sugar. I am going to buy more fruit tonight on my way from work.

I do ok during the day. I have a problem at night. See...I always have a bag of dark chocolate in the house. Then there are my favorite ice cream sandwiches that are in the freezer. After dinner I always gave myself a sweet treat. If I can work past that I can make it.

DC - can you put the log in to the spreadsheet info at the begining of your first post so we don't have to search through the thread to find it!?

On to day two. I got home from my workout last night and my husband was baking sugar cookies. It took so much will power to bypass them and just eat dinner. 1 day down many more to go.

On a side note ... the HFCS commercials totally crack me up "it's okay in moderation". Is it moderation if it's added to almost everything?

Yeah, I think the accidentals are as dangerous as the in-your-face-looks-so-good holiday treats.  I needed a $10 bill yesterday.  My usual pattern would be to go to the ATM and get a $20 and then go to the snack shop for a Diet Coke and small candy bar - just to break the $20 bill.  I didn't do it and went inside the bank instead.

I wasn't cranky.  I am never cranky, no matter what the circumstances.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  I did have a headache by the end of the day yesterday and it has carried over to this morning.  But I have gone off processed food before (more than just no sugar) and in a few days you really do get used to it and you quit craving and the headaches go away.  The problem comes down the road when you say "Wow, I have been so pure for so long.  One won't hurt me."

Good luck to all on Day 2.

Leah

I am not getting the headaches or the crankiness.  Just cravings.  Like, I really really want a cookie.  Or a sugary Sbux latte.

*sigh*

Haven't f'ed up yet, but I won't be at work for the next 5 days and even though I'll be home alone that is almost more dangerous!!!!

I'm the same - I don't get cranky, I have to stop the cravings.  I think the coffee helps stop the headaches!

Although I was cranky last night, but just at Bobby - the table was loaded with cookies, raisinettes, fudge, etc.  So as I was reaching for a clementine, I was thinking "this better work!"

Laughing

Everyone feel free to add to Joe Slacker's food from time to time.  I was going to anyway to make sure he stayed last, but we can all get creative with his intake!

I can't edit that post anymore   Save it as a favorite on your computer.

I'm either going through massive detox or I caught a stomach bug.  I wanna hurl.  Really.

Oh, and by the way, limit the Honey.  Read this: http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/sugar.htm

This article also explains why sugar supresses the immune system.  It makes 100% sense to me.

I feel like Dorothy right now in the middle of the tornadoe... I can't wait to land on the other side of the rainbow and start feeling good.  I don't know if I ever mentioned this prior, but a LARGE portion of my diet has always been sugar.  We're talking black & white cookies, chocolate chip muffins, 8 sugars in my coffee, skittles -- all of this EVERY SINGLE DAY, 10 lifesavers at a time, yeah ... I'm that bad...  why do you think I put up 100 bucks ... cause I didn't wanna do this alone.  Something tells me I will be praying to the porcerlain prince before the day is over.

I say we make Joe Slacker a heroine junkie who lives in a dumpster behind a bakery and just eats sugary stale crap the bakery throws out and shoots heroine all day ... ahhh what a life   I'm glad he's not going to win the money, cause he'd just spend it on drugs anyway

I think I'm becoming delusional...

Gah! Accidental slip-up!

I've been concentrating on checking for sugar in the top 3 ingredients of everything, I forgot about the no junk food rule.  Just had a snack-size container of Pringles potato chips.

I'm so annoyed because there are some chocolates in the kitchen that would've been much more bang for my ding. (Ok, that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean.) I could've had more satisfaction out of one piece of that than the whole thing of Pringles.

I got through yesterday without much trouble.  Although when I was at the grocery store someone had left a box of doughnuts on the magazine rack.  I looked at the labels (there were 3 different kinds in 1 box) and I saw that sugar was the 4th ingredient on the cake doughnut!  I just laughed and thought "no way is this really acceptable for the challenge".  I was not tempted at all by them, was just curious as to when the nutrition label said.

My mid-morning snack today was greek yogurt with some honey and an apple thrown in, pretty tastey.

As Kathy said, I wonder if it is caffeine. I think there are some caffeinated waters out there to you could try may take the edge off more.

Thank god there is no ice cream in the fridge. I might just stick my head in a container of granulated sugar and absorb some by osmosis. Cool

A little headache today, but not bad. Although, I always eat a granola bar during my workout. It feels like I'm cheating!

I am glad there is no one baking in my house that would drive me over the edge I think.

just make sure you don't lick your lips while your head is in the container of sugar.  :-)  You don't want a ding for licking your lips.

The first 3 ingredients on that doughnut were probably fat, shortening, and lard.  (I can't believe that my parents make cookies with shortening, which is pretty much straight fat.)

I successfully made it through Day 2 without a ding; however, I came close today, as my mind was telling me that other people have dings already so I won't look bad if I get a ding.  Not smart mentality, but my mind wants sugar!!

Now, I just have to make my way through Day 3.

I read somewhere that a high sugar diet encourages a population explosion of yeast throughout the body.  After all, what do yeast eat?  Answer: Sugar.  If someone suddenly cuts sugar from their diet, there is a massive die off of yeast within the body.  Toxins released from the billions of dead and decomposing yeast cause us to get headaches and feel like crap for a few days until the dead yeast and associated toxins are gone.

 Day 2 and going strong!
