jonmetz - 2009-11-15 6:56 PM With 3,000 on the bike course, how will it be possible not to draft?

Just keep passing.

They've got to be able to keep up with me climbing if they want to try and draft off of me ......... which is very few people out there.

For any of you who have not done LP and are nervous about the swim, I just want to give you a different perspective.  I didn't have any problems.  Swallowed a ton more water than I'd have liked b/c of the chop from all the swimmers, but my contact was minimal.  Hands & feet everywhere but nothing more than just what you'd expect swimming close to a lot of people.  Taking the turn around too tight and getting kicked was my own fault, but it wasn't hard and it only pushed my goggles on tighter.  I started about 2/3s of the way to the right, in the second line of people.  I asked all the guys around me what they were planning to swim it in and they all said around 1-1:05, so i felt like i was in a good spot.  When I hit the first turn around and headed back on loop 1 i realized i was way far right and swimming all by myself out of the draft area!  I was maybe 15-20 yards to the right of the buoys at this time.  So if you want to swim where there is less contact, go wide!   Anyways, I purposely moved in closer, but still did not have any problems.  Loop 2 was pretty empty and numerous times I found myself moving left so i was closer to the bouys & more people to get a better draft.

It is possible my experience was similar to others but my perception was different, as i have zero fear in the water.  It is possible it was b/c my attitude was not caring about my swim time and just wanting to have fun.  Regardless, *my* swim was not remotely what i imagined it was going to be.  I absolutely loved it and thought it was the most fun swim I have ever done.  I was really wishing it was 3 loops i was having that great of a time.    Can't say i was wishing the bike or run was 3 loops...  ha!

PennState - 2009-11-15 4:31 PM Great looking beer how does it taste???

3,000 are registered, yes about 2,500-2,700 will race of that 3,000.

However there are more to race as well...

1. the pro's.
2. Community fund slots.
3. Special entry slots for VIPs.
4. People gaining entrance from other events like RI 70.3, FLA 70.3, Cal 70.3 etc.

Could be 3,000 racing after all is said and done.

I don't know if 3k will race but anything around 2.5k or over and it will be a sh*t show for sure. The swim is going to be very crowded, the out and back is going to be a draft fest plus the descent to Keane on the 2nd loop might be very hairy.

This is most likely going to be my 1st and last IM (at least WTC) for a while. To be honest I am only doing it to put it on the resume. Apperently is not enough I've helped many athletes to complete their 1st IM, PR and KQ. If I haven't done one most likely I don't know what I am talking about. To boot I am hoping to go fast and even KQ (though I'll prob won't take the slot). That way I can say I've done IM, I KQed and then it will mean I REALLY know what I am talking about

Anyway, having this many people in the course seems a bit too much...

PS. I would draft of Rick though I don't know if I could get to swim that slow to come behind him! (j/k)

Dude, if you are behind me on the bike, you had better have had a few flats or just decided to side stroke the swim just for fun!

PennState - 2009-11-16 11:02 AM  That's sort of an unusual reason to do IMLP. I understand the logic (ie; your coaching practice). Sort of sad as it doesn't sound like you really want to do LP for any other reasons???
there are other reasons but the training and racing format of IM is not what makes me tick the most. That's the HIM distance for sure at least for the moment. But who knows after I complete the 1st IM, I might change my mind!

i don't understand what you are saying in the bolded part.

But I can tell you i know someone else who was pretty sure an IM was a one time thing....and she was begging to do IMWI 7 weeks later!

Perception is a funny thing.  I know that I kept getting asked my PR's at a transition clinic I was giving for newbies in conjunction with a local sprint tri series.  What they fail to notice is that even if I went fast overall, I could have had horrible transition times.

But my friend did some research and apparently those coaches that have KQ'd make 30% more than those that haven't.  Go figure!

I think know Jorge had me ready for Louisville last year.  Despite him being short and never racing an IM.

What I meant was: the specific training required for IM racing is not what I enjoy doing the most. It requires a lot of steady state long efforts which are for most part controlled and it requires patience. At HIM or shorter distances OTOH the intensity it is more intense and you can be much more daring with your pacing, that's all.

Bet you a beer on that one... :-)

Actually, right now even a slug is faster than me up a hill ........ so you'd get that beer.  We'll see if I can get any semblance of skillz back by next July.  Still a big experiment with the beta blocker.

Just keep passing.

At Eagleman I did that and got a Penalty for Blocking.  They sent out our wave like 7th or 8th ... and their was a line close a half mile long of people at one point, packed tightly, and I blew past them all and got a nice Blocking Penalty.
