Awesome, guys.  Great to hear about everyone's race plans, and particularly appreciate the pics of our cool (we think) tri outfits.  :-)

Overdid it in my 10K time trial on Saturday, and pushed too hard on another "quality" run of 1200s Tuesday.  Left achilles flared hard, and it's taking a couple of days off resting comfortably in a boot.  Think I'll forgo any speedwork on the calendar for the remainder, and just go for recovery/aerobic endurance pace.  Would rather show up on race day ungimpy.

On another note, did the first uphill on the bike course six times yesterday, recovering on the descents. As usual, windy as hell.  Some of you better bikers with a good tuck will hit 40MPH+ coming back the other way toward the end of the ride.

The same damn thing happened to me Sunday from my half marathon - BOTH ankles went tweaky.  Yesterday was the first day I could walk w/out limping.   LAME.  I'm scratching ALL speed work and maybe some recovery runs, depending on how things are.  We will NOT gain any fitness at this point, so its more important to take care of things and toe the line healthy.

rbhancock1 - 2012-05-24 11:43 AM Question (perhaps a silly one) to those who've done M-dot events before:  How is liquid aid (like Ironman Perform) distributed on the bike leg?  I mean, is it in a cup?  A screw-top plastic bottle?  Or do they go so far as to put the elixir in a bike bottle suitable for your cage?  Thanks.

Every WTC event I have done will give you fluids via hand-up in a bottle that will fit in your cage.  They should have bike- appropriate lids (a top you can drink through) and if you have a super-awesome volunteer, the bottle will be all open and ready to go for you.  I personally carry liquid nutrition in my 40 oz Speedfill bottle (on the frame) and use an aerobottle on my aerobars for any water.  I'll take a bottle from the aid station and dump in there to drink.  That way I don't need to mess with a bottle.

Almost prepared for this race, but wondering about the cold water.

Does the temp require a cap and boots?
Swam in Lake Sammamish last year when the water was cold and it was tough on the face and head.

Also, how much has changed with the athlete's guide?
The 2012 hasn't been posted.

Temp will require a cap but possibly not boots. I will probably wear my boots though just because when my feet get cold my whole body gets cold. Someone posted on here the water temp was like 51.  I believe that was a week ago????

I'm going to be leaving you with my crappy bike and non aero helmet unless you beat me out of the water .

I know your race number... I'll be looking for you! Although you will be starting 12 minutes behind me, so if you are coming out of the water first, you can probably have my bike. That being said, I went for my last really hard run last night. Similar to the last hard run I did before my 13.1 in the end of March. My previous run was 7.15 miles at a 7:02 average pace which put me pretty close to cracking. Last night I extended that to 9.65 miles at the same 7:02 pace, but this time I still had a bit left in the tank. Obviously I don't expect to run that pace at Boise, but I feel pretty comfortable to be shooting for a 7:30-7:40 pace to start and dropping the hammer on mile 7.

That is a pretty impressive pace there.  I am realistically shooting for 7:20s which is what I have been running during my bike/run bricks.  But I will see how I feel as I have been having a hard time going from swim to bike and keeping my heart rate down which than ultimately messes up my run.

Speaking of times/plans, what are your guy's time goals for this event???

This is my first HIM...My training has been decent minus the month I had take off of running. (Ankle is still flaring up on runs over 6 mile:/) At this point I don't care about the ankle...the adrenaline will me through the 13.1 and I'll deal with the consequences. So, I've set what I consider to be attainable goals  based on my training with the help of this site...

If all goes well, I'll finish just under 5:55...would be awesome to see something in the 5:40's, but I have a feeling my run is going to take me between 2-2:15 with the bum foot. Plan on being buzzed by 7:00pm!!! (I'm such a light weight that I'll probably be buzzed after my first beer)

I'm shooting for 5:45, but I'm with the group who is there for my first HIM and want to soak up the atmosphere of the race.  Good luck you fast suckers.  8:02 would be fast for me, but 7:02 is out of the question.

Look for a FRED wearing bib 802 and you'll see me.  I ran out of money after buying my bike so nothing left to buy a fancy race kit.  I have a yellow helmet, black and orange blue seventy top, and black and red LG shorts, but at least I'll be comfy on my new P2.  My wife says I should have a sign that says "I'm ugly and my mother dresses me funny."

I'll trade you straight up for my new tri top and shorts and my bike for your P2. http://scudopro.com/zcart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_13_109&products_id=1428

I'll be riding a bike similar to this but with at least aero bars2007 Allez

*giggle giggle*  Me likes this website!!!
If I plug in my slow swim time, manage to keep my transitions similar to my Olympic, bike nearly the same as Vineman, and run my typical slow time, I'm at about 7:01:58
That's about 25 minutes slower than last year's Vineman (of course I did take 14 minutes of my Oly last weekend)  Ya'AY!!!

I looked at my last brick (41 mile bike, 7 mile run) to see where my HR's were. It looks like I was running 7:50 miles in the upper 160's or low 170's which is actually fairly low for me in the run. By comparison, I ran the last hard run in the low/mid-180's for almost 10 miles with gas left in the tank... It is really going to be about feel on race day. If I can keep myself in the below 7:30 and be comfortable for the first 5-6 miles things should play out well.

My max HR is around 210-213 and resting around 43-45 so I have a big range to play with. My lactate threshold on the run a few months back was around 193. I'd like to retest it, but now is not the right time. Based on the run on Tuesday it may be a little higher considering I averaged 185 for over an hour...

Lots of ice (wraps and baths) between now and Boise... I took 2.5 weeks with only 1-2 shorter runs because of injury and sickness and I didn't see any drop in fitness. If anything it probably helped a little because my body needed the break.

In terms of goals, see my post a bit higher on the page. But a day like this would be everything coming together in perfect harmony.

Race 36:58 (1:45/100yd) 03:30 (T1) 2:40:00 (21mph) 02:00 (T2) 1:34:58 (7:15min/m)

Sounds like everyone is getting excited for our race!  I'm really looking forward to this one.  I like the point above about having both qualitative and quantitative goals.  For me, if weather cooperates, I'd like to (i) beat last year's 6:00 time; (ii) beat my HIM PR (5:42); and, if all goes well, (iii) go sub 5:30.

Qualitatively, I really want to have a good run.  I've yet to have a solid run in a HIM, so having a solid run is definitely a goal.  I've been running and riding a lot more this year to get ready, so the engine should be in better shape this year, just have to have a smart ride to set up the run.

The link for the triathlon calculator is cool. Thanks.

I am hoping for 5:16:19 based upon a 2:00/100y/2min T1/19.2MPH bike /2min T2/ 7:20 pace.

My last hard bike/run brick I rode for 1:43 with heart rate around 160 and then ran for 1h 25 with avg hr of 155 at a 7:22 pace.

Overall though if I come in under 5:30 that will be great as that is my goal as I feel that is achievable considering this is my second tri ever and I only did a sprint last summer.

I just hope Lucky Peak isn't as cold as Lake Coeur d'Alene was last night for me. I figure about 48-49 degrees.

Thanks for sharing all your goals, people.  Courageous putting it out there like that.

Mine are much more qualitatively focused.  (1)  Swim as straight as I can; (2) Keep power under control on the bike, and do my best to negative split the power profile at 210 1st half, no more than 220 second; and (3) negative split the run with HR 155-160 1st half, 160-? the second.  Just want a solid run.  Whatever that yields on race day, well, I guess that's my goal.  I don't really care about the time.

Okay, that's B.S.  I want a sub-5:10, and I'll swim over anyone, force you off the road, and push you out of the way to get it.

You've been warned.

I was reading through the Athlete's guide.  It says your number has to be worn on the bike.  Does this mean you are supposed to wear your bib on your shirt in addition to having your number on your bike, leg and helmet?

Had they not included "in addition to... bike number" I wouldn't have thought so, but b/c they included that phrase, I do believe they mean to wear your run bib on the bike.

What an annoyance, that thing flapping around... UGH!!!

Anyone looking for a "sponsor" should check out Team Beef... I'd do it, but I'd prefer to stick with my one piece tri-suit.

You could very easily grab a race belt (about $8 on Amazon) and have it on towards the back during the bike and spin it around on the to the front on the run. That is my plan.

As far as the water I would recommend a swimcap if you can stand it. The chin strap can be tight but I find once Im in the water I concentrate of the swim and not the 'little' things. When I did CdA last year I actually had 2 swim caps AND a neoprene swimcap. But everyone has their strategy.

I did the Issaquah Tri last year and the water was cold. It took a few out-n-backs to get somewhat comfortable for me. Im doing that race again this year as a shake down for Boise. Perfect distance (1/4mile swim sprint) to get the cobwebs out of the system and a week before Boise. My goal is to beat last years time and I should based on how I feel now and my run improvements but its another race and things can happen.

Ive done 4 1900m TT swims in the pool the last 6 weeks and all are within 45secs of each other so I have what I have now and wont improve any. Will keep swimming but do controlled relaxed workouts.

Getting close.

treeman1406,

I did that Issaquah tri last year as well. Signed up for this one coming up as a pre-cursor to Boise.
I picked up a cap and will wing it with the feet. Not worried about the distance, more just having frozen hands and feet prior to the bike.

Going to jump into Lake Desire this weekend and see how the wetsuit feels...

Gearing up!

Lake Sammamish doesn't look to bad right now. I haven't registered for the Issaquah Tri yet but I might just do that as practice for Boise. I don't think I will race the run portion, but it will be good to practice transitions.

I'm a little concerned about the "no swimming prior to race", but even more confused...I swam at Lucky Peak countless times growing up in Boise. Is this a rule that enforce during these events? Should I trick them by showing up at the lake in board shorts with a Bud Light and then slip into my wetsuit when no one is looking? Swimming in that cold water prior to race day is a priority for me...God knows I can't practice that in AZ.

I am hoping for 5:16:19 based upon a 2:00/100y/2min T1/19.2MPH bike /2min T2/ 7:20 pace.

Just so you know, there is a fairly long run out from the water to the transition area itself.  With that, a 2 min T1 might be tough.  I think the swim out timing mat is right out of the water, then its a short run up a hill to the parking lot where T1 is.  Just so everyone is prepared for that.

ahh thanks for that info.  wasn't sure where the mat was placed at.  The only other tri I did had the mat at the entrance to t1 which was further than the distance we have to go for Boise.

I did ask my friend who has done Boise in the past and lives there. She said that you can swim below lucky peak but she also thought that they did some sort of organized swim on Friday.  Maybe they just don't announce that?  But the other option would be to continue past the start up the road and go to the other dock/boat launch in the cove.

Bike numbers: they give you two bibs, so if you are more comfortable with a cycling shirt you can pre-pin it for the bike and then change shirts (or do a race belt) for the run.  I personally find that a race belt with one number for both legs is sufficient.  Sure, its a bit annoying with your number flapping around on the bike, but just pretend its a cape.

Swim in LP - I'm thinking they discourage swimming for safety.  You have 1500 athletes all doing bike check and then to add swimming to that (without lifeguards) is an add'l logistical hassle that I don't think WTC wants to take on.  There is a USACE pond at the foot of the dam - I think its $10 to get in and the water is taken from the bottom of LP Reservoir.  That means it will be even COLDER than what we're swimming in.

Look up Quinn's Pond on Google maps.  Not exactly the same but it is a place to go swim before the race. I might swim there instead of paying the $10 to go swim out by Lucky Peak.  A triangular loop of Quinn's Pond is roughly 1.5k.
