Hi all,  got some bike questions 4 weeks out.

1. When should I have my last tune up before my HIM done?

2. I have yet to bike the actual distance of my HIM (point to point, 59mi/94km).  Longest ride to date is 51mi/82km.  How important is it that I have done the distance?  Would my time be better spent doing more short/intense rides?

Thanks!

For your tune up it depends on what you have done.  Just cleaning and tightening everything up I'd probably do it a week before so it's still fresh.  If you are getting new cables/brakes etc you will want to give it more time so you can "stretch them out" and get everything tightened up again before the race (maybe two weeks before).

As for the ride, no clue, my longest ride so far is 38.

Ha!  I read that as last tune up RIDE.  My bad!  I'd do it about two weeks before the HIM if possible.  I like to make sure that I am happy with the shifting after the adjustment.  As TJ said, it depends on how  big the tune up is though.

Thanks for responses.  I'm not sure what I need re the tune up--I'm having some creaking in the cables when I am shifting, so perhaps need a replacement?  Bike is still new though (bought Nov 11)--could I need new cables already?

What TJ said about the cables stretching.  When cables are new, they are tight and the shifting is set for that.  As they become less tight, the shifting needs to be adjusted.  Also, since you have been having icky weather, you could have gunk in your derailleur which is clogging up the shifting.  I think that Kate may have some expertise in the clogged shifting department Innocent

Pro Tip:  If you bike starts to shift by itself and your cables are old, that is a good sign to change cables ASAP.

It's better if you do the race distance many times before the actual race (plus some) but you'll be fine if you pace accordingly.  I had 3 total rides in the 50-56 mile range before my HIM last year the rest were 25-30 miles at a faster than race pace.  I went out a little hard on the bike and felt it during the last 6 miles of the run.

I would take your typical 20-30 mile ride pace and go out one or two mph slower.

The only endurance event I had done before my HIM was a marathon and I hit the wall just before mile 20.  The HIM took me nearly two hours longer than the marathon.  So I didn't know what my body would feel like after 4+ hours of continuous duty.  Had I slowed the bike down some (and did better with nutrition) I would have had better results.

Clean/Lube the chain, make sure derailers are shifting smooth, simple tune up.  Have bike shop do it if that's in the budget.  Mainly make sure everything is in good working order and tires are good, wheels are true etc.

I seem to do ok with pacing on the bike I think.  Honestly, I feel as though I went too easy on all my previous races--which will actually bode well, as the pace that I went is likely just right for the longer distance of the half!

Have you thought about nutrition on the bike?  You'll want to test that out on one of your last few long rides as well.   Think about things like:  What are you going to eat?  Can you open it and pedal at the same time?  Do you need to snip the packaging beforehand?  How are you going to carry it (in your pockets? in a bento box?)  What about bottle hand offs (you'll probably need at least one)?

That's the one thing I do feel ready for .  I am having lovely success with Perpetuem.  When I trained for my marathon, gels were working for me, but since then, my body has decided that they are evil and must be gotten rid of post-haste.  I have experimented a bit with some bars and they seem ok as well, so will likely take at least one of them as well.

Thanks TJ!  I'm looking forward to the Firecracker 100k tomorrow.  It should be fun :-)

It's actually a BikeMS training ride and I plan to ride with my peeps from Team CBC.  You may be unaware that my BikeMS team is sponsored by a brewery!  It's a microbrew place.  One of the owners' wife has MS.

My fav numbers are those with the least amount of numbers in it.  Ex: 222 (or 22, or 2), or 333.  Next best is something like 242...  I once had a sail number (I used to race sailboats) whose # 181811 - it was coveted by other racers!!

Do you want to know that the rides start and end at the brewery?  And that we perform quality control at the open taps in the warehouse?  We are nice, we don't charge them for our QC services.

Next time you are in the Raleigh, NC area, you know who to ride with!

Thanks!

I had mine done 3 weeks out gave me time to test it out.

Doing the distance - i didn't either, I did 75km instead of the 90km required.  The only issue is knowing that you have the extra 8km in your legs or not - make sure you've done a few brick sessions too.  My training was all about number of hours rather than distance - next one I'm going to make sure i cover the distance too....

jogo - 2012-07-03 1:48 PM Car packed for my 1st training tri (before the real thing on Sunday).  Its pouring, thundering, and 100% humidity.  Supposed to clear up and then warm up to 104 degrees by the time I make it out to my favorite swimming hole.  Here is to the 1st OWS in 3 years!!  Here is to seeing if my wetsuit still zips (and for those who like it, the zoot decor is right where a tramp stamp would be and is quite a conversation piece that I am never selling!).  Here is to trying out the new tri-suit before race day!  Here is to surviving and not getting struck down by lightning (which could happen because I said H*LL would have to freeze over before I did another tri and it sure is NOT frozen, it is full blown, the-devil-is-my-pace-booty HOT out there!)!

Holy H*LL in a Handbag!!  In the middle of a deserted lake (with my newbie friend) and torrential downpour, complete with tons of lightning and scary booming thunder.  Not a soul around.  Thank God we had our wetsuits on (virtually impossible to drown).  Could not put head in water to swim because could not breathe when I tried.  The rain was pouring so hard it was hard to get any breath.   We finally made it out, kissed the ground, and the trail we walked out to get to secret lake was flooded.  We had to wade through mud to get back.

Managed to clear up as we got out so we still got 14 hilly miles in on the bike and then bailed on the run because the storms started just as we racked our bikes.  So happy to be home, eating a chicken schwarma sandwich and drinking ar really good Founder's KBS stout ale.

We didn't die, so all is good.  Bring on the tri!!  (I may have panicked a little when we were holding each other up because we couldn't see each other with all the rain.  Bad news, my cell phone was with my towel in a dry bag and got soaked. So much for a waterproof bag in weather like that.  It is sitting in rice, hoping that it comes back to life.
