Extreme Veteran 2263 Ridgeland, Mississippi | Subject: RE: n + 1 swim challenge Originally posted by switch Two questions for the group: 1) After yesterdays swim I noticed a quarter-sized lump/bump on the front of my left shoulder. FWIW, I breathe every 2 and on my left, and I'm guessing it's my weaker side. It doesn't hurt, per se, but I do feel it. If you've ever done a lot of bench, chest-fly or pushups and have had soreness the next day along the sternum, it kinda feels like that. Anybody have any idea what it is?
2) Have any of you ever done any swimming in an Endless Pool? Does the current change how you "feel" the water or your stroke at all? If I felt a quarter-sized lump anywhere, I'd consider getting a doctor to look at it. |

Honestly, I'm getting a little scared of the bike with each day that goes by. I did ask my husband to bring it back from the farm the next time he went out. I will get some green on my log, promise :) I will go to the doctor--mine is in Ireland until tomorrow. I just thought maybe it was a thing that somebody had some experience with when they bumped up the yardage or something. |

I've had shoulder impingement issues before...mostly from playing volleyball but I've felt that, I dunno...pressure? in the front of the shoulder. It could also be bursitis or something like that. My chronic swimming malady is my neck gets stiff and sore if I ramp up volume too much, so I'm being really careful this year and it only hurts a little. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: n + 1 swim challenge Well I got "n" in today. I had planned to do a 2nd set of 50's but ran out of time. Today was a bit of a pacing experiment as I haven't done these types of sets in a while. It felt pretty good. I was able to push it a little harder than I thought. So if I'm doing two workouts a week what should the other look like? 500 wu 5 x 100 @ 1:30, 10 sec RI 5 x 50 @ :41, 10 sec RI 5 x 100 @ 1:28, 10 sec RI Total: 1,750 ok. I felt guilty and had to edit that my times were lava pant aided.

Jonnyo posted the other day that 10 X 200 with a fairly short RI was his bread and butter set. Granted, he was saying he could get it done in half and hour, so it may not be quite so lickety-split for you and me (40 min?), but still could be pretty good as a second set. I'm curious to see what the other say though :) What do the Lava pants do for you?

I'll try the 200's for n+1. Lava pants provide a tremendous amount of lower body buoyancy. They make me feel like a hydroplane vs. a tugboat in terms of streamlining in the water. It has been fun to swim with a very noticeable increase in velocity. Since I started wearing them about a month ago I've been unable to set them aside. Not sure how bad that is yet. I am sure many would say they are a crutch and will slow actual stroke development when used exclusively but I'll be in the lake in my wetsuit in another month and will be for the rest of the season. |

Member 119 Ledyard, CT | Subject: RE: n + 1 swim challenge Got my n swim in for the week. On the advice I received over the weekend, I wanted to work on pacing but was limited on time. 200 w/u 100 kick 2 x (5 x 100 @ 2:00) -- I think I'm getting the hang of this swim lingo 100 kick 200 c/d I went out way too fast on the first two 100's (came in on 1:30) and my next three suffered. I got my pace much more under control on the second set (came in between 1:40-1:45). I see more of these sets in my very near future. |

Expert 4930 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: n + 1 swim challenge Originally posted by switch Nice set there, sir. Why do you think the second set pacing went better than the first? I think it's because I eventually get into a rhythm, and I always can pace better with paddles for some reason. Maybe it's the stronger pull and slower stroke rate...I dunno. No swimming for me today...AM theshold bike (which was pathetic - when's the bike challenge start again?? ) and an easy lunch run. |

I was mentally prepared for it and had a realistic goal of 1600y in my head. My 400 and 1100 splits were the exact same as I have posted here previously (7:31 and 20:21 respectfully). That being said, I'm a little disappointed in my effort. My stroke got lazy and I had some crossover starting in the 750 - 800 yard range. I realized it and straightened it out at about the 1100 yard mark. Then my goggles started to leak at about the 1200 yard mark. I fixed that really quick and then just finished, didn't really push. I definitely have to work on my pacing and stork. The goal for my +1 swim this week is to continue to work on my catch and pull. I bought a swim snorkel so I'm looking forward to trying it out on Friday. Thanks to everyone for posting their workouts, it's given me some great ideas. I have just started to be able to get a sense of my "feel" for the water, and I think part of that was helped, or I noticed it, because I just had to pool hop for the last week. I swam in three different pools in one week, and each one had it's own feel. It was weird. When I got back to my regular pool, I felt it on my first 100. It actually made me smile in the water.
