Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. So how was everyone's June? I had my biggest month ever. Though every month since I first started back in Feb. has been my biggest month ever. Now I just need to work on getting my run time up. THat should be easy enough now that my shins are improving.
Unrelated, but I also did my biggest continuous swim of my life yesterday. |

Took a whole day off as reward for that one. have a look over what else happened on that day - I almost gave up before it had started!! lol lil_t - awesome work on the swim! and just check out those totals for June!! You surely rock lol Here's mine: June's totals: Bike: 5h 6m - 83 Mi Run: 4h 39m 45s - 27.23 Mi Swim: 4h 40m - 8450 M Bike Trainer: 45m Rock Climbing: 5h Squash: 1h 30m I'm aiming to smash that over the next few weeks on the run up to London. Speaking of which, I'm taking some much needed time off work next week and one of the jobs I've got lined up is get fitted for a wetsuit. There's an outfit down south that has an endless pool for you to try before you buy your kit so I feel a road trip coming on!! What's it like swimming in a wet suit anyway? the only time I've done that in the past is scuba diving and it's not quite the same lol |

Master 1404 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. a wetsuit.. all I can really say is that you definitely need to do some open water swimming in it before the triathlon. The way it adheres to your body makes those who are predisposed to claustraphobia, and or panic attacks, stress out a bit in the water. It's a very bizzare feeling. Even those who have never panicked before, end up having some issues. It clings to your body tightly and the first few times you wear it, you definitely have the sense that you want to get it off of you as fast as possible. You just need to get used to the feeling. Wear it in your shower if you must.. but have it on for at least 30 minutes at one time to get an idea of what it will be like to wear it at your race. Other than that, it actually does good things for most strokes. Keeps you more balanced, and in line. Also, the best and most obvious benefit, is the boyancy and speed increase you get. Unless you are made of lead, then you will find it impossible to sink while wearing one of those. Let us know what you pick up. |

Happy about that.. Running miles could have been higher. Things are on track. I'll be racing the Peachtree Road Race on the 4th. Anyone else racing that day? |

Kimje, your totals are always impressive, and considering the schedule you carry, that makes it all the more impressive. Everyone else is looking good as well. Jonathan22, one would think you are the one training for IM. PeterAk.. keep up the great work. You are well on your way. Lil Turtle: Great job. Each month is a milestone for you, and that has to feel good. |

Expert 963 | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. Good grief, I looked at everyone's monthly totals and I have to say I feel a little inadequate (sadly, it's not the first time). Despite being a "beginner" group, this is certainly a dedicated group. The level of consistency in training is inspirational, especially considering how busy life seems to be for everyone. |

I was just talking to someone about this the other day.... I think the best part about starting out as a total beginner is that I see so much huge improvement all the time. I constantly get to amaze myself with what I am able to do. Like my swim....I was originally going to do 800 b/c that's the distance for my tri swim (750 actually...just found that out) but then I figured what the heck I'll go for an even 1000. It was so great b/c I still had energy to spare when I finished the 1000, and just a month or so ago when I did my 800 I barely made it and was too exhausted to move at the end. My running is almost back to where it was prior to shin splints....and then look out! Now I just need to figure out how to get faster....I'm noticing that even though I was close with some of you timewise you are still waaaaaaaay ahead of me in distance! I'm taking a swim lesson on sunday so hopefully that will help. Sorry to babble but I'm just feeling really good tonight. For the first time I'm feeling really confident about my tri. I really feel like this is something I can do and do well! Thank you all for your encouragement....you all are wonderful! |

Member 30 Ocean Springs, MS (on the Gulf of Mexico) | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. I have been quiet because of injuries. I pulled a calf muscle a couple of weeks ago in my last Tri. Additionally, I have what I believe are shin splints and sore ankles from my Team In Training marathon workouts. I have rested the calf for about a week and then tried to run only to tweak it again twice now. Needless to say, I am a little frustrated. I started the season out so well, but with the injuries and work, I don't know when I will race again. I had to ditch the plans for the Chicago Marathon. My target is now Disney in January 2008. Any advice on recovery for these injuries? How long should I wait before trying to run on the calf again? |

I've got a friend here in Colorado who's been fighting w/ shin splints too. Until they heal up, she's been aqua jogging. It might be able to help you get some running in without all of the pounding that's causing your injuries. I've never done it, but maybe some of the other folks here have? |

Just take it all in, learn a ton of things to improve for the next race, and at the end of the day, call yourself a Triathlete. |

Extreme Veteran 407 Greenwood, SC | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. Good luck lil turtle!!!!!!!!!!!! Bill, sorry about the injuries. I think the aquajogging is a great idea if you can work it out. Otherwise, it might help to run on a softer surface, grass or dirt if you have access to a trail. Ice helps a lot with shin splints. |

Just make sure you finish it and you'll have a great time oh, eat well the night before and drink lots of water on the ride Bill - tough call, mate. can't really offer much more help than good thoughts and support really. aqua jogging sounds like it could be a good option worthy of a shot though. how's everyone else going? |

Extreme Veteran 490 London | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. Practised mounting the bike one the run with the shoes attached to the bike today. Was a lot easier than I expected to be honest though I still nearly face planted once or twice lol I've seen people using elastic bands to hold shoes to the bike for some reason. Can anyone explain what that all about? |
2007-07-13 10:26 AM in reply to: #805274 |
Master 1404 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Atl_runner's group - full for now. The elastic bands hold the shoes horizontal, allowing for easy access. I believe that once the foot is in, the rider just proceeds to break the bands by simply pedaling. I'm racing Chattanooga this weekend. I raced it last year and did a 2:39. I did a 2:27 at St. Anthony's this year, so to be honest, a time between those two would satisfy me, but I would really like to go sub 2:25. Not sure I can do that as my training is focused on Ironman and my legs are feeling the effects. I am certain that I am not going into this race at 100 percent. The legs are just not recovered like I would want. In a sense though, this is just more training for IM Wisconson, so I will take whatever I get, and most of all, enjoy myself while doing it. Anyone other than myself and Lil Turtle racing this weekend? Edited by atl_runner 2007-07-13 10:28 AM |

This is my off week so lower volume this weekend, 2.5 hour bike tomorrow and 1 hr run Sunday. Hope to get some work done around the house and rack up some extra sleep. The girlfriend is out of town until Sunday and while I miss her, it's nice to not have anything big scheduled and I can enjoy the lounge time. Goooooood. |
