Speaking of wetsuits I got mine in Friday. A Zoot Zenith swiped off ebay. All I need is a mask and cap to go with it.

Local bike shop is having their Blue light sale this weekend, got a new floor pump and a dozen CO2 canisters 50%. I am trying to convince myself that a cyclops fluid trainer is worth it at 60% off... the weather is looking great and I don't want to do it but the price and more snow last week with more forecast means I might be going down tomorrow to see what is left....

Dear Texas,

Thank you so much for the big welcome party you threw for the first day of spring! Pea-sized hail, 40mph winds, and now 43 degrees. Please be a little more forgiving tomorrow morning during my 3 1/2 hour bike session as I am trying to enjoy my biking experience. I will be incredibly grateful!

Sincerely,

Roadrhino

So as harassed I went on my bike ride yesterday.  I was a little worried about the pace they would set, especially since they didn't indicated a pace on the website.  Turns out I am much fitter then last year (not just the beginning of season, the whole year.  Thanks Jorge!) and had no problems hanging with the big dogs.  Meant a fellow Canadian on the ride which was interesting.  It's pretty easy to tell I am Canadian when I am in shorts.  Figure that one out.   Biking down off Mt. Lemmon was incredible.  You can see the whole city.  The views were so worth it.  I've driven it but this is different.  The head wind really slowed the decent so I need to go back up and try again soon when there are no winds.  The mountain looks worse then it was.  Normally on hills around Oregon I am looking for extra gears that I don't have and on this one I felt I could maintain my pace all the way.

I should mention that the ride was part of Trifest that has been going on the last 3 weeks here.  When we got back from the ride they had the expo set up with all the different vendors.  I left the wallet in the truck on purpose.  Saw some pretty Zipps that would look nice on my bike (they had them all there), some pretty bikes, etc etc.  I left pretty quickly so that I didn't get in trouble.

Today I have to do a long run in the heat of the day.  Ugh.  I made a promise to go see some silly hummingbirds at some silly museum.  Yet these are live birds.  I don't get it...  The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is actually a zoo, natural history museum, and botanica garden all in one place.

Sounds like a nice time with the kids.  Way more important then training.

Newtons1st - 2010-03-20 10:57 AM I ended up taking thursday and friday off with the kids. They are on spring break. So we went fishing all day Thursday and it wore me out. Move my run from sat to Friday due to weather. Got a long trainer ride in this morning. Wow do you miss alot being gone for a few days.

No kidding!  It is CRAZY windy today so if you made it out I hope you are being careful.
I am so over this cold weather sneaking back!  I know, I know, we will be compaining about the heat and humidity soon but that is what we signed up for, what we expect.  Not 30's with 30+ mph wind in March!

Sounds like you had a great ride!  Mountains/Hills are my weak spot. I need a lot of work on the them. So I assume you have a tattoo of a maple leaf on your leg? I actually work in Toronto, but live in Houston.... try to figure that one out. hehe.

So I've been giving this a lot of thought and I'm not sure I'm gonna do the triathlon in May.  I'm really not that confident in my swim yet and not sure that I feel up to an OWS without being really confident in my swim.  Also the week leading up to the triathlon is the first week of work for me.  I will have a training session in Raleigh for 4 days that week and I just don't know that i want to come back and immediately do a triathlon.  The wetsuit is another problem.  I don't really want to buy one yet and I don't know of anywhere that I could rent one.  There's a triathlon in Greenville (about 40 minutes from Clemson) in August that I had planned on doing anyway and I'm thinking this may end up being my first one since I'll have all summer to work on my swimming and prepare for it.  Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, 30 gusts to 38 and 40 degrees did not sound the least bit enticing this morning. I hate to not get the long ride in today, but I'm pretty certain if I did try to ride in this it would only hurt my relationship with the bike...so maybe tomrorrow after work...

I'm moving Tuesday's run to this afternoon, since it is a longer run and I have the whole afternoon anyway. I know running in this wind won't be all too pleasant, but it doesn't sound as intimidating to run for 90' vs. bike for 210'.

I am originally from Amarillo, and I can not remember the last time it snowed this much in North Texas.  Sucks the swim was canceled.

Right now, I would like to send the insane wind back up north...training in the wind is not fun!

I decided to select a pool swim for my first Tri (June 26th).  I hope that the pool swim / bar fight will be the right choice for my first Tri.  Since it hasn't happened yet I have no idea if this is the right choice or not.  I can't swim but 100m straight right now and I need 300M by June and longer distances for the open water swims I plan to complete later in the summer / fall.  I can't suggest to you to suck it up and do the OWS when I have made a different choice for myself.  I don't have a wetsuit yet and don't plan to get one until next year.  I can tell you that my plan to be in the pool 2-3 times a week is the only way any of my plans are going to happen this year.  If swimming is your weakness you have to swim more.

We don't have much to look forward to on our rides as far as scenic view around Houston.

I am glad you made the decision to go and that you are happy with your training progress.

I've got swimming on the workout schedule monday wednesday and friday now.  The tri in may is a 750m swim which I am nowhere near able to do right now.  The one in august is 500 and in the pool which is making it look way more appealing for my first tri right now. Good luck with your swimming!

One other thing to consider is that you don't have to freestyle the entire OWS.  I have a seen a good number of swimmers using whatever they had to get it done.  My wife suggested I use the side stroke to "regroup" and catch my breath as required.  Perhaps you can get to the distance required in May with using another stroke or two?  I hate to see you wait until August to get your first TRI in.

I had planned on being the last or our group to actually become a triathlete.  I have to get through my 40m anxiety attack that seems to keep getting me in 9ft of water.  The shallow lanes were already taken so I ended up back in the lane that seems to stop me at 50m.

Don't throw in the towel just yet. I was in your shoes for my first TRI and could barely swim the distance in a pool never mind OWS. On top of that the TRI was an ocean swim on a windy day with lot's of chop. When I got the the first buoy there were 2 guys hanging on for dear life and it made me question my sanity. I swam the distance with freestyle and sidestroke just to get back to shore. I made it and it was awesome. You can do it too!!

WRT the wetsuit, you can checkout some online wetsuit rental companies. They'll ship them to you prior to your event to give you time to check the fit and take it out for a couple of training swims.

I agree...don't give in just yet! It's still about 2 months out and that is a lot of prep time. Trust me, when I was prepping for my first sprint a year ago, I was uncertain of my ability (overall) to complete the distances. It's amazing what can happen in a month of training, much less two...and if you train with any regularity, you are probably more prepared than you think.

I think I remember you mentioning it was a lake OWS...bonus! You shouldn't have to deal with any insane chop or currents. Plus, it should be relatively warm by that point, too. Check around on wetsuit rentals, definitely a good option. And as far as your job training the week prior, it won't affect you as long as you train consistently now...it's the base you build that will get you through the tri, not 2 or 3 days of individual workouts.

I'm going to say x3 on this... you do not need to be able to swim the distance straight to do the race.  If you have the option of the wetsuit, I'd highly recommend using the online rental or local rental if you can find one. If you work on a 'safety' stroke like Ken mentioned you'll be fine. For some people a couple breaststroke pulls or sidestroke is all that's needed for a quick rest and if you're in a wetsuit you can just roll over and take as much time as you need.

I think I remember you mentioning it was a lake OWS...bonus! You shouldn't have to deal with any insane chop or currents. Plus, it should be relatively warm by that point, too. Check around on wetsuit rentals, definitely a good option. And as far as your job training the week prior, it won't affect you as long as you train consistently now...it's the base you build that will get you through the tri, not 2 or 3 days of individual workouts.

sma777 - 2010-03-22 8:34 AM Don't throw in the towel just yet.

Emmanem - 2010-03-21 12:55 PM So I've been giving this a lot of thought and I'm not sure I'm gonna do the triathlon in May.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.  I'm gonna check to see if we have any wetsuit rental places nearby and then online.  I did 1200m in the pool today and managed several 50m freestyle and I'm pretty confident in my backstroke so maybe that can be my "safety".  James AKA "Mr. I'm awesome at all sports and can beat you in anything" has challenged me to a swim competition (800m) so maybe that'll be extra motivation to really work hard at this swimming thing.  We're really competitive with each other so there's no way I can let him beat me.  He has decided to run a 5k with me in April to pace me I'm very excited about that.  Well I think I'm gonna set a 3 week or so deadline to decide for sure about this triathlon but you all really have me feeling like I can do it now.  Thanks again everyone!!

Okay, I am reeealllly back this time.  Didn't end up having the uniterrupted access to a computer Friday or over the weekend like I thought I might.  I am trying to get caught up on the past threads...

Great job on the ride Kim!  Sounds like a great course!

Emma... x4 on what the others have posted!

I hope to get back into training mode tomorrow, and make a feeble attempt to salvage what I can from the upcoming April races!  The weather and my schedule has not been the right recipe for a strong early season 70.3 like I had originally thought.

here's my contribution to 'cute pet pics'  Dixie (our 1st Doxie on our recent camping trip) She was plum-tuckered-out!
