Looks like I'm going need to rethink my breakfast...

I eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Pebbles cereal for breakfast with milk, as well as 2 cups of tea (yes I know, lots of tea, but I love it!).  Usually on the days that I bike (this was way before I did training for triathlons), I normally have one Poptart, and the other during the break. Never had any issues...until i tried using the gels and screwing up my nutrition (see way way previous posts!).

On the days that I have been swimming in the morning, I usually just have tea, that's it, then after the swim I eat.

I definitely would love to start making smoothies, they sound sooo good!

Volunteered at the "Ice Breaker Indoor Marathon" this morning at the Petit National Ice Center here in Milwaukee and got a pleasant surprise.  Not only did we get to cheer on our friends and teammates at the race but we also got to watch the US Olympic Long Track Speed Skating Team do thier work out as they get ready for Vancover.

Coming from a life long Ice Hockey player all I can say is, "It is amazing how fast those sprinters are!"

Well, I am back from Vegas...physically, financially and emotionally devastated!  Thanks for the inspires while I was away, but unfortunately they didn't inspire me to do a damm thing toward working out while there.  Thought about it though a couple of times.  My week was pretty  much booked up with working all day and entertaining customers during the evenings.  Glad I am back though.

Time to get back at it.   Hope everyone is doing ok.

I've got a 1:30 bike ride on tap, and have been hoping/planning to do it outside, although a wee bit of rain last night might hold me back. Watching the skies...

REAL QUESTION HERE

How do you manage the mess when you clean your chain? After it rains around here our roads are a mess. I need to clean my chain more than I do, but I'm always paralyzed by knowing what to do with the icky mess. What do you do? And what do you feel is the most enviornmentally sound? Do you catch the ick with newspapers and put it in the trash? Do you wash the rag you use to help with the cleaning? How/with what? Advice, please! I've only cleaned my chain 2-3 times in my bike's life (BAD!) and feel pretty inept each time I do it. (Yes, I've watched the videos here and on Youtube.) Thanks.

RUN TRAINING QUESTION!!!!!

I am in the third week of my base training for this season, and have a question regarding long runs.  I have two Olympic races scheduled this year, and am wondering how long my weekly long runs should be?  As a reference on my currnet long run status, I ran 9 miles @ 9:02/mi last week, which was easy, and today I have a 90min run scheduled.  Is there any point in going longer than this EVER during my Olympic distance race training?

Oh, and my wife accidently washed and dried my Ipod, which is why I am not running right now...it actually still works, it just lost its charge..so i'm waiting for a charge.

Thanks

How on earth does your chain make that much of a mess, you actually have stuff that falls from it when you try to clean it?

Just put your bike on the trainer and take an old shirt and pedal a bit with one hand while the other holds the rag on the chain.  The video's have some good tips on how to hold the chain to make sure you get it as clean as possible.

Then you put a bit of oil on the chain and run it through all the gears on the rear cassette and wipe off any excess.

I personally like to change my chain and all cables once a year.

Are you talking caked on mud or something like that? If so you can just use water to wash it off, then dry, then oil it back up.

Maybe it's me that makes the mess! Ha ha! (Kinda like John can break things? Heck, his chain came off when he was on the trainer!)

Anyway, it seems like there is road grime that gets caked on, and the last time I cleaned it (outside on the patio) I felt like the stuff was dripping everywhere. Maybe it was user error. I'll watch the videos again. I did get caught in rain today and the roads were pretty ick, so I should be a good girl and clean it.

I do have my LBS do a tune-up once/year, so everything gets cleaned and checked and such. I figure I'm good on this chain through spring but will likely replace before my IM.

Another question: I never know how much oil to put on... one drop per section-thingee (what are they called?)? Yeah, I'm pretty ignorant on the bike front but I am trying to learn. I have a friend here who is a very nice mentor and helps me through many of these things (and makes me do them on my own to learn).

I am currently training for an HIM and the longest run I am seeing on my plan is about 2 hours (14-15 miles or so for me).  I would imagine 90 minutes is plenty.  I would say if you are getting about 2-3 other runs in during the week, then with your long run, you should be good to go.

Hope the ipod is okay

If it is wet where you live then buy the chain lube that is for wet conditions.  Ask your LBS about which chain lube to get.  I generally use the White Lightening wax.  They make waxes for different climates...

x2 on the ipod.

so i'm no expert here but i did notice something in your logs.  over the last 30 days you've logged ~95 miles.  NICE!.  i see 5 or 6 of those runs have been less than 5 miles.  or said differently, the majority of your runs have been longer than 5 miles.  there's no doubt you have the OLY distance locked in.  since your first OLY isn't until the end of june have you thought about exchanging some of those weekday 5+ milers to shorter harder stuff...doing some speedwork?  even for my HIM right now which is end of April I'm only busting out a 8-10 mile long run and the other two runs are <6 including speedwork.  i dunno.  it just seems, to my untrained eye, you could get more bang for your buck working in some shorter harder stuff this far out.

what plan are you currently on and what are you using for your OLY's?

SWIM Question:

I have a light workout tomorrow so I am thinking about hitting the pool and work on flip turns. I have never done them. I want to see if I can get to where I can do them for an indoor tri next month.

Any pointers or links to good tips on how to do them?

Thanks.

when you learn how to do them please share.  every time i try, maybe once a month, i end up tangled in the lane line or in the next lane or bang my head on the bottom.  so i never do them.  at first i felt kinda weird not doing them when others were around but no longer.

also, others might correct me here but don't some indoor tri's not allow flip turns?

LOL...you are describing what I probably will look like.

As to flip turns for an indoor tri, I am thinking it is allowed in this one. At least it was last year. And I felt I was losing precious time/lengths every time they flipped and I did not.

But that does bring up a question as to whether they are allowed in sprint tris that have the swim in a pool. Are they usually allowed?
