OK all, I have to tell it.  Personal milestone in the pool today - 1/2 mile continuous swim!  I know it doesn't sound like much compared to the yardage some of you put up, but considering 3 months ago, I was doing 100 yards at a time and was wiped out after each one, I am extremely happy!

Andy and everybody else.......you gotta stop with the "buts", "I know it doesn't sound like much" and all the other denegrating comments about your performance.  When you have a great achievement, like Andy and Doug did today, YOU'VE GOT TO SCREAM IT FROM THE ROOFTOP AND LET IT STAND ON ITS OWN!  Each one of us is in a different place in our tri experiences and all the little accomplishments are celebrated by the group equally.  Enough said!

dalessit - 2009-06-18 2:57 PM So suzy what do you do for Marathon nutrition and fueling?

I realized I have gotten really slack this year and doing everything off reserves which isn't a good idea and really not possible in a Marathon which would be the longest event I have done.  I am really shooting for right around 4hrs(would love to be just under but not counting on it for my first)

I have no problem with gels while running, I stick with chocolate ones, which is funny because I normally am not a chocolate fan but other gels taste too sweet and fake where chocolate gels just taste like chocolate.

I can drink from a squirt bottle while running, but pretty much have to come to a stop to drink from a cup or I just splash it everywhere.

I have used sport beans and some other shot block type stuff also and they all seem fine also.

While I guess I could just go with the solid foods, I really don't want to have to carry them for 26 miles.  I ran my 1/2 with a fuel belt with 2 small bottles of accelerade one gel at the 6.5 mile mark and some sports beans every mile or so.

I thought about infinit but obviously can't carry enough for the whole race, maybe could do some conentrated stuff and squirt into cup but then I pretty much have to walk to drink it.

Official training starts in a few weeks and I want to use the nutrition for the whole plan so trying to get a plan figured out.

Tony

You are right, there is no way to short calories and fluid intake during a marathon.  If you do the last 10k blows.  It took me several marathons and a lot of experimenting to get it right, but I finally figured out the formula that works for me.  In a nutshell, you need to replace about 30% of the calories you burn.  In this link  you will find an article on calculating your calorie needs as well as a good article on osmolality.  I use Infinit for my primary source of carbs/electrolytes and supplement with CarbPro.  I can only drink so much of one beverage before the gag factor kicks in.   If it is hot, I will supplement with a Success Cap every hour.

I do carry a Fuelt Belt, the 4 bottle (8oz) version.  My sherpa aka Paul hands me a second fule belt about 14-16m into the race with a new stash.  Is your wife running the race too?  If not, she could perhaps be your sherpa????  Otherwise, you could find a spot and hide your fuel ahead of time, not always easy.    I do know people who concentrate their Infinit and then chase it with H20 on the course, but that is NOT exact enough for me.   Like you, I never get in enough water from those little cups on the fly.  You could decide to walk through the H20 stop and probably would not lose much time in the long run.

As for solid foods or sports beans/blocks I cannot handle them.  If you can, I think you are at a distinct advantage. They are easy to carry and water is plentiful on the course.
.
You also brought up the topic of hill training.  I did not do any of it when training for my early marathons or even Boston.  The risk of injury is great, but mainly due to the downhill portion.  MCM is not that hilly, but if you decide to add hill work, I would recommend running up the hill hard and recovering by walking down the hill.  Much easier on the knees and hips.  It is a great way to raise your LT without constant speedwork.  Personally, I do not see how hill running can replicate long runs.  One of the benefits of the long run is getting your body used to being out there for hours and learning to carb spare in the process.  If you want to do hills, do them to strengthen your legs, not for the long run (that is just my opinion).  I just started doing hill training this week for the first time ever.  For me, it is all about building leg strength.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I"M YELLING A LOT TODAY!!!!

Rueben your an Entomologist?? Neat!

Did you have to look up the spelling or did you know off the top of your head?

And I quote, "Hey everyone what is a person called when they study bugs?" A what? Ok, I'l google it for spelling!

Reuben

Are you really an entomologist? where? I was the Marketing Director on Raid for three years before I left SC Johnson.  Used to spend a lot of time in the entomology center working on new more effective ways to kill bugs.  My favorite were the Hissing Cockroaches!  Those suckers were big and nasty!  The smartest were the ants. I could watch them for hours.

Steve, I agree with others, you should make one or both of those bike pic's into a poster with the title HTFU or something like that.

oh, and sadly I think lately I am on the forums more at night even than during the day.  I am working on an embedded operating system that takes about 45 minutes to get compiled and it involves a lot of trial and error, make one change, compile and copy for 45 minutes, nope not working, make another tweak, rinse and repeat.

So I have lots of free time while waiting...

Conrats on the distance Andy. It took me awhle to reach that distace also. It seems once you break through about 12/1500 meters it's jsut a short hop to 2000 or 3000. I think it has a lot to do with getting into a good rythym.

Trevo: oh so witty youngester. ha ha ha . Ento..enta .enti... oh heck  Bug man

Steve: awesome pic and poster. I would love to have one. Preferably with myself in the poster. Maybe I could just photoshop myself in.

Got a promotion at work already. They want me to take over the Dept I just joined. Gotta love it when it all starts to come together. You were right Steve. New year New job HIM coming up. things are looking pretty good right about now.

Good luck to everyone racing or just plain out having fun this weekend.

Now I'm getting a little nervous about the Oly on Sunday. I went onto the website and lookded over the course. I know most of that area as it's local and there is quite a bit of "gently" rolling hills there for both the bike and run. The swim is a double loop of the 750 M swim for the sprints the day before.

love love love the Steve poster - that's my new computer wallpaper. The second Steve put that pic up, I thought "that pretty much sums up HTFU". Steve, you are amazing. Good luck at Livestrong - my husband is doing it too. We drove up that hill near Montreaux last week - that's nasty.... but after Boise, that'll be a breeze for you

So my race got postponed by 2 months but I've kept up on training and decided to sign up for a sprint next weekend.  First race - cant wait!  Reading all your posts and race reports really inspired me to race sooner than later. Going to do the course tomorrow (it's close to my house).  Still taking it easy on the running so we'll see how it goes.

So if you guys came upon a windfall of say 500 bucks and you were in my shoes what would you get.

A. Better Aero front wheel.  Right now I am running a Neuvation M28 (or is it R, whatever the aero version is), which is basically a regular front with aero spokes.  I would be looking at an H3 or HED Jet.  Something with non carbon braking surface so I don't have the wheel sitting around waiting for races.

B. Garmin 705.  Doing longer rides using a cue sheet sucks, I always get lost, would be nice to know where I am going.  Really only reason I would use this.  My PT is wired so it wouldn't be able to replace the head unit on my PT.  But of course it is technology and I love technology.

C. Wetsuit.  Right now I don't own a wetsuit I like, but really I only have a few races a year that are wetsuit legal so it is almost worth it to just rent, since I probably would spend 500 bucks over 3 years worth of rentals.

D. anything else?
