Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I rode with my group this morning and had a hard time keeping up, when last week I felt really strong. I have bumped my volume up a bit ... riding 40ish on Fri and and impromptu "love your heart 10k" on Saturday. I was pretty tired going into the 10k, and tried to keep Z2 which I pretty much did, as I finished in 1:01, so it was just a fairly hard training day. Pretty hilly course! I guess my question is should I push through the workouts this week and get the volume in per my plan, or cut back a bit and rest so that my long workouts toward the end of the week can be nailed? |

![]() | ![]() Well I followed up my GREAT run on Friday night... With a terrible run yesterday. Started out my 10km run and the snow kicked in about 1.5km into the run. Then about 4km into the run it was like a blizzard. I was pretty commited being 4km away from the starting point. I actually slipped a little and aggitated my bad knee, felt a twinge in it for a split second then it felt fine so I thought nothing of it.. That was until we got back to the starting point with the group and I stopped. I have been having a bit of a tight knee after runs. Icing it seems to make it go away real fast. I thought maybe a bit of Patellra Tendonitis. But today. IT HURTS to walk and I can't bend my knee very well, about 90 degrees behind me then after that it is REAL tight. Made my first appointment for physio today. Need to get this looked at and Need to stay off it I am sure. ![]() Guess its just swimming and weights this week and whatever I get from physio. But I am pretty sure my plans for my HM in May will be shot. |

Have you start IM training or are you still diddling around in the off season? if you are in OS, I would say back off and get ready for later in the week. If you are in the early phases of IM training, I would ask you why the heck you threw an impromptu anything into the plan? and are you following a plan or just making it up on the fly? I was a religious zealot in following what was given to me for my first IM because I had no idea what the heck I was doing. And yes, I realize that life happens, but impromptu crap can be controlled. Don't you love hearing from me? |

![]() | ![]() Well to be honest I have an old MCL injury. I tore it 20 years ago. I agitated it in August but within two weeks it seemed to be fine. I did a hard spin about a month ago and 90 mins in I had to stop I came out of the saddle and I could feel my MCL tighten up. I took it easy for a few weeks. I have been doing more stretching exercises, leg lifts yoga type stuff.. etc. But a few weeks ago the tightness shifted to just below the front of my knee cap. And only came on after run work out. Or the very odd time the first few mins of a run or a bike. I mean very few times. I warm up relatively slow for about 4-5 mins on a run or a spin. Last week I felt it after my run on sunday. My knee was now tight not only below the knee cap but a little bit behind the knee. Ibuprofen and a bit of ice and it felt fine within 30 mins.. full motion. I had a GREAT run on friday and very very very little tightness in the front below the knee cap and a bit on the back of the knee. As in I could just barely feel tightness on a scale of 1-10 it was a 1 at best. After yesterdays run it feels tight on the back top of calf most.. so lower part of knee. A Tiny bit on the lower hamstring. As I sit at my desk and I extend my leg and hold my hand on either side. I can feel some crackling on the MCL ( I have kind of always had this) But it seems to stand out more right now. Maybe because I am paranoid, or maybe because it is true. ![]() | ![]() Oh and there is NO swelling around the knee... Or non that I can ever see. Just tightness... not a sharp pain anywhere.. Just a VERY STIFF feeling and some slight stiffness aggitation when bending. Edited by Techdiver 2011-02-21 9:37 AM |

Just tightness... not a sharp pain anywhere.. Just a VERY STIFF feeling and some slight stiffness aggitation when bending. This is way out of my league. I'm pretty good with soft tissue stuff, but nothing like this. I would say the fact you are feeling it a bunch of different places means you are compensating for the problem which is never good. I think your strategy of seeing a sports med doctor or ortho is a good one. What's the timing on that appointment? |

![]() | ![]() Called this morning, I have an appointment in the city I work at for 4:45 pm. I have to fill out paper work then start my consult at 5pm. My wife's boss recommended them to me as most of them are Triathletes or endurance people and do coaching as well. I am along the lines of what you are thinking. I am wondering if my MCL acted up but my other muscles and tendons took over. And now I have strained them etc etc. But I need to be proactive before it gets worse. I am hoping that there is no sign of swelling means a good thing. But you never know. I may or I fear I may have to get an MRI done and re-evaluate this MCL once and for all. Now that I am active I may have to give in to surgery etc at some point. But I will do all I can to avoid that for now. I am leaning towards Tendons etc. Only because it doesn't hurt until after I stop moving... But what do I know I play with robots and manage people and make plastic automotive parts for cars.... I will let the professional tell me. I am just glad I got in today due to a cancelation from all the snow we got. |

Linda I will post later tonight after my appointment and my drive home. I only get two nights a week to swim.. so I have to make the most of that. Hopefully I can do some yoga or I might have to hit the weight bench and some upper body work. All I know is with this new lifestyle in the last year. I CAN'T sit still anymore and my focus is to ensure I can work out and keep my health.. then worry about racing and stuff third... Because Fun comes second.... 1. Health 2. Fun 3. Racing or something like that... I am all about the fun. Trust me based on the debauchery that went on at my friends party on friday.. Pictures of me with a blow up doll on my head while eating pizza have leaked... The Terrifying part is explaining the pizza eating... ![]() Edited by Techdiver 2011-02-21 1:04 PM |

Don't you love hearing from me? How dare you suggest that I would just "wing" anything ![]() The impromptu 10k was on saturday, which called for a 1.5 hr run in Z2. I subbed in the 10k and ran with Katie and we talked during the race. I did not push it and actually did less than my plan probably called for. This morning, was to be a 1hr run on the plan, but I switched the bike for tomorrow for the run today, so I could ride with our group. It was not a fast ride, but I was having a hard time keeping up, so I dialed it back and rode steady. But I am usually one of the strongest in the group. Do I keep training tired, or take another rest day? Maybe training when stressed is what am supposed to be doing? Linda suggests pull back a little for the long day's success??? After Knoxville, I will fall back into the same plan or may move up from the intermediate plan into the competitive plan if i think I can handle it. After knoxville I will be a few weeks into the 30 week plan from IMFL. |

After knoxville I will be a few weeks into the 30 week plan from IMFL. Not trying to give you a hard time at all, just want you to be honest with yourself....and this is only the opinion of someone who had done one IM so take it for what it is worth...a novice speaking her mind: If you truly did do that 10K in Z2, then it shouldn't have felt like a hard training day which you stated first. Z2 is a conversational pace and you should walk away feeling fine, not fatigued. Did you do any recovery immediately afterwards? I learned last year that sometimes I had to ride alone vs. doing the group thing because it made me stick to my plan. Honestly speed has nothing to do with it. What did your HR tell you on that ride? how did it match up to RPE? Is other crap going on in your life that is causing you stress? are you eating well? sleeping? et al? Based on your second note, I would agree with Linda, but I also think based on your training levels that being tired is odd...something is going on and only you know for sure what you're really doing and NOT doing. Training for an IM is no joke. To stay healthy and full of vigor you gotta plan like crazy AND stick to your plan. And yes, I said the same thing to John last week and he has his IM in 2+ months! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello from sunny Arizona!! The kids and I are visiting my folks during the kid's "ski week" break. Last year I did not take this trip due to IM training. This year I told myself life is too short, and the kids and I will enjoy the break and grandparent time is so very, very special. Came here with the plan of taking 6 days off from my bike and doing lots of running and swimming. So far, that plan is a MAJOR FAIL... Just ride 50+ miles with a group of retirees on a borrowed bike and had a BLAST!!! Talk about remembering why you do things, this was such a treat. I had connected with my parent's neighbor earlier in the week by phone, he made some calls and found a bike, so I joined up with these peeps who ride about 200 miles/week together. They have set rides on M/W/F/S and stop at a bakery mid-ride for fuel. I got to ride on FLAT ground, with people, and instead of Infinit and liquid nutrition my ride fuel was water, a blueberry fritter, and coffee. The kids stayed with my folks and spent the morning at the pool. Awesome. I'm heading out again on Wednesday. So, my week off from my bike will result in about 7 hours and 100+ miles of riding. Love it. It's fun doing the IM on round 2 because I'm a lot less anal about everything. Yes, I am following my training plan like a true little OCD triathlete, but I'm throwing in some more runs, and going with the flow just a bit more. As Suzy said, you do have to plan like crazy and make the key workouts happen, but I think taking this week and improvising a bit is going to be GREAT for my mind set, and my body won't suffer. Happy trails to all. Doug, love the design! Chris, hope the knee isn't anything serious. Ms. Mighty Mom, please get the bladder thing checked out! Everyone else, keep on keepin' on!!! Cheers to all! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Too much quoting but I agree with Suzy on the part about not riding with a group while you are Triathlon training. It's one thing if it's an unstructured ride but if your ride has some structure to it, i.e. ride x distance in X HR/Wattage/etc you won't get that on a group ride. Not nearly as fun going out for that 3 hr solo ride as it is with the group but you'll get more out of it. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quick hello from the "happiest place on earth"...as I mentioned to Kyla, boy is it stimulating! But having a great time for my first time back in 20 years! I forgot how fun it is to scream at the top of my lungs out of control on a rollercoaster. Love it!Taking a few days off from any training and just relaxing. Might jog around the outside of the park tomorrow morning but if not, I don't think it'll be a problem. Barry, I think there will be times when you are not feeling your best but as long as you are not talking about an injury or illness, sometimes you will find it is just a sluggishness that will pass after you are warmed up. It happened to me alot last spring when moving from 6-7 up to 7-10 hours/week. I'd be thinking, wow, how am I going to crank out this long run, or long brick etc, but I would just break the workout up in chunks and usually they'd just get better once I found a groove. Sorry this post will be one big run on, but I am on an i Touch. Anyhow, take care everyone! |
