Fun morning in the ER.  Sam was out riding early this AM and her front tire got caught in a pavement groove and she went down.  Luckilly there were people that stopped to assist and call 911.  She ended up with 7 stitches above her eye and a bit of road rash on her leg.

The lady that called 911 was nice enough to call me and let me know what was going on and held on to Sam's bike until I got there.  Bikes a bit scratched up but doesn't appear to be anything major.

They did scans and such no head injuries or anything like that.  She's home now but a bit sore.

Oh no!  Thank goodness no head injuries, rest up Road Warrior!  At least if there is a scar, there will be some athletic component to the story.  Hugs!  Oh, maybe not, that might hurt.  Air hugs.

Did an OWS this morning with my "old" 305 in my swim cap. First time I have tried this!! I got it in fine and started fine, but kept hearing it beep while I was swimming. I figured it was losing satellite reception/tracking. Seeing as it only registered about :30 (when I swam for :40) I'm sure that was the case. It did say 1.18 miles for that :30, so that made me happy as I was just noodling along and not swimming overly hard.

How do you control it losing reception? Was it the thickness of my swim cap (I have thinner ones but was wearing a heavier one)? It was a cloudy day (raining) so that may have affected it as well.

FOR SUZY: I was thinking about your air-swallowing problem when I swam. My lake was a bit choppy today and I found that I was in a position to swallow more air. I realized I was doing weird things with my mouth to prevent this. When I was breathing in/out, I noticed I would put the back of my tongue on the roof of my mouth and sort-of force air out of my nose before I swallowed it -- almost like that thing you do when you have an itch way in the back of your throat? It's hard to explain, not sure if I am making sense, but there were definte adaptations to my way of breathing to prevent myself from swallowing (too much) air.

Happy racing!!!

I will try the 305 in cap when I swim OWS on Monday.  Yes!  I already signed up to go, so no backing out!

Kyla- I read somewhere, I think it was in dcrainmaker's blog that you should put the 305 on the back of your head so that when you are horizontal, it is right at the top facing the sky...but maybe you did that, so who knows?

Congrats on the awesome bike leg, Doug, you are crushing it this year!

I think mine was more at the the top.... I was worried if it was more in the back it would interfere w/my goggle strap. But I'm OWS again tomorrow so I'll try that!! I have a brand-new 310 (haven't swum with it yet),  so the 305 is now a "spare," but I still don't wanna lose it!! Yay for YOUR OWS on Monday!!

Scary, glad to hear everything is OK.  Air Hugs from WI!

Makes you realize how important that Road ID really can be.  Probably the best $25 anyone of us out on the road biking or running can spend!   If you don't wear one, get one!

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Hey Twin--a lesson and OWS class? You are getting hardcore woman!

Sam-oh no.  I hope you are ok and Tony better wait on you hand and foot for a week!!!

Doug--AWESOME.  I'm going use a little "DOUG" for my own ride tomorrow.  Inspirational.

Kyla--I do find that if I remember to breathe out of my nose I swallow less air.  I am sure that makes no sense to anyone else, but me.  I will "try" to remember that tomorrow.  Or at least for my Monday class (yes, I too have OWS Monday night!).

Three showings done!  Let's see if any bare fruit.

I ran  the 10miler today with 4,200 people in 85 sunny humid degrees. I came in 20 out of 205 in my AG at 1:26. I appreciated the ice towels at the end!

Hi gang - I'm home alive and almost well.  Let me tell you that the face in not the best place to land first in a fall and dried blood is not a cool mascara.  My right side is pretty sore but I will heal.  The best news is my brand new bike seems to be ok.  I did have to ask about my bike before being taken away on the stretcher.  LOL  And some were very nice people on the trail who took care of me until the ambulance arrived.  I wish there was a way to thank them.

As far as the accident all I can say is sh*t happens.  It happended so fast I don't think my hands left my bars.  And I didn't even do anything stupid.  Oh well.  All in all things could have been a lot worse.

Any advice on something on my face to prevent scarring?  I have a fairly large patch of road rash under my right eye around the eye socket.

Sam, Kristina's doctors recommended applying vitamin E after her knee surgeries. Take care of yourself!

Sam you are lucky you had no time to take your hands of the bars. That is how you break a wrist or hand. Rolling with it is best so that the brunt is on your shoulder. Sorry about the face, but glad it was not worse.

You are so right.  I do think that prevented me from breaking anything and I defintely landed on the shoulder as well since it is pretty tender.

Linda - do you mean just busting open some of the Vit E capsules or getting a special cream?

Scary! Sam, I'm glad you're okay! When my daughter had stitches on her chin the doctor recommended cutting open the capsules of vitamin E and spreading it on the site every night before bed. I'm pretty sure this was only once the stitches were out. We kept doing it until we ran through the bottle of vitamin E. It seemed to work pretty well. Take good care of yourself!!

Sam- I'm so glad you're relatively OK and the bike too, of course.  Sounds really scary! I've heard great things about emu oil for preventing scarring and helping healing, but haven't used it myself. I know you can pick it up at most health food stores. Hope you heal quickly! *hugs*

Congrats to Doug and Linda! Super speedy bike split, Doug! Amazing job in that heat, Linda!

Sam--So glad you're going to be ok and your bike is not damaged.  We need pics!!  Wink

Linda--nice run in the heat and humidity.  Sounds like you are enjoying your summer.

Kyla--You are a swimming demon.  I wish I lived close enough to you for some 1-1 lessons.

Doug--way to crush the bike portion of the race.

As for me, I'm gearing up for my first tri next weekend.  It's close to home, so I plan on going down and checking our the course this week.  I'm excited!

The title: The race that wasn't......

After an hour delay the RD cancelled the swim due to continued lightning and thunder and turned it into a ride/run with a TT start every 5 seconds.  Decided riding in those conditions wasn't worth it.  There was no way I could excute my "balls to the wall' bike strategy so bailed.  The storms appear to be passing, but no regrets.  The even bigger highlight was the 8' rip in my wetsuit when I put it on. Quite a day.

As you  might imagine, I am looking for a back up race!
