Yeah, after the picture was taken we all went out for a  1.5 mile open water swim without wetsuits

now you're just rubbing it in.

So I guess I shouldn't mention how cold it was at dawn this morning when I got to the outdoor pool for my workout...

until it cracks from an earthquake.

so... jealous...

but doing my first tri of the season in june without a wetsuit in 65-degree water only adds to my mental toughness, right? right?

    Morgan, thanks for the assist!

That good looking guy next to this is me.  Taken in Oct. 2007 at the Austin LiveSTRONG Challenge and Ride of the Roses.  I've lost much more since then.  Down three more pants sizes to a 36 and still losing from all this cross training.

    I *love* the jersey

Nice family photo, Morgan. Typical So. Cal family at the beach.

I don't have a before pic to share (not in computer) but tomorrow is my 8th anniversary of joining WW and losing 30 pounds. My deal had always been losing, gaining, losing, gaining and each time I'd gain more than I'd lost. This time I've kept it off and tri training certainly helps. btw-- I think any kind of non-deprivation (no diets) and moderation program works for weight loss -- not just WW.

Re: Soda -- I think diet soda can contribute to overeating because it fills you up on emptiness, no nutrition, but you don't eat because you're full-feeling. Then later, you eat more to make up for the lack of nutrition during the day. At least that was my personal experience.

Todd -- AN IM!! OMG -- you rock. Which one?

Good news is that the sun was coming up on my commute this morning, so finally evidence that the days are getting longer. Bad news it is supposed to snow 4 inches or so tomorrow, but hopefully I can get myself to the gym before that starts.

I'm bummed out that there is nowhere right now for me to walk outside because of the amount of ice buildup. There are a bunch of trails around here (I live 10 mins. from the Appalachian trail and a short drive to two rail to trails). I have to buy those YakTrak things that go on your shoes to give you traction.

have you guys seen Lance's pictures from his training in Hawaii that he (or someone) posts on Twitter? Pretty cool stuff. (also is counting number of times he's been drug tested - I think it's somewhere around 15 or 20 at this point.)

    Great pictures.

(Although...seriously...he's violating one of the supposed cardinal rules of climbing in the second one...the bike should lean from side-to-side if you're climbing out of the saddle, not you, so that your stroke is straight down into the ground. The first picture looks like he's doing it the "right" way.)

I think he'll try Kona either this year or in 2010, after he gets his TdF comeback out of the way.

    Todd,

I'll write a note to Lance, letting him know about your disapproval of his technique.  I'm sure he'll appreciate the input and fix it right away?

A little sore today ... much of it is still from last Sunday's 10k, but I did a short brick on Wednesday and a smokin' run last night.  Well, smokin' for me, at least.  Just over 4.5 miles at an 8:38 pace.  I really just started running in mid November, and even then, not all *that* seriously.  It really showed at my last tri how weak I was on the run, so I decided to really work on it.  When I started, a 10 minute mile for 3 miles was a successful workout.  Very, very happy with the improvement!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll resist the urge to crow about the weather forecast for SoCal...you guys with snow can console yourselves with our earthquake last night.

(Of course, neither my wife nor I felt the 'quake...happened when I was out running while she was in the middle of a bike fit.)

My current temp job has been extended by a couple weeks (I'm replacing someone out for surgery and he had complications...bad for him, but a bit of a break for me). That means I'll have Fridays off until, probably, the beginning of February (the company I've been temping for has a four-day work week, Mon-Thurs).

Here's how I'm making use of that change in schedule to support my training and racing goals: I'm taking advantage of Fridays to try to get at least "caught up" on my bike fitness with long solo rides. I'm hoping to do 52 miles today...that'd get me, essentially, back to where I was after HIM training last summer. Then I'll start to shift focus to build for my marathon in May and more hills on the bike in preparation for the Wildflower HIM earlier that month. I'll still do long rides over the next six weeks until I'm at about 62 miles, but they'll become less frequent as I up my running. I need to have put in at least a couple 18 mile runs and a 20 miler by two weeks before Wildflower, so that I can at least taper for that race a little and not totally overtaper for the marathon. By using my Friday days-off for long bikes, rather than taking up a weekend day, I can afford a more gradual run build and shake the couple nagging minor injuries I'm healing up.

Hope y'all have a great weekend! Anyone racing? Or have any special training or recreational plans?

Y'know, it's funny...I was being flip...but going back and looking at the pictures critically, in the second picture (that I was making light of), his stroke actually is more vertical than in the first picture--the way it's supposed to be--even though the bike is vertical in the second and leaning in the first. He's got his center of gravity way off to the side of the saddle in the second picture (and over the pedal, where it should be if you've made the decision to get out of the saddle), but just doesn't appear to be oscillating the bike.

Good job! 8:38 is really great for that distance this early on. It really is great to see improvement like that, isn't it?

One of my trademark soapbox issues is that most beginning triathletes without a significant running background don't train the run enough. With the swim and the bike, you have support (from buoyancy, from the bike)...in running, there's nowhere to hide. Most of us can jump on a bike and at least ride if we are drawn to triathlon in the first place. And the bike is the most important leg of a tri...just because it's the longest chunk of time and that multiplies whatever deficit you have if you're a below-par cyclist like me. But if you watch Ironman events, very often the top cyclists can't hold their leads and lose to strong runners who just managed to stay within shouting distance on the bike.

People will talk about the importance of preparing for the bike so that you get off it with enough "in the tank" for the run. But my contention is that this does you little good if you aren't actually prepared to run in the first place. I know from personal experience that running can be cruel when you are overweight, so I know that for a lot of folks using triathlon to help reach weight loss aspirations, the run is something that they have to just get through in the early stages. But I'd encourage any of you who aren't being held back by injury to try to embrace running. Approach it with care...overdoing it definitely can set you back...but I think it builds a kind of mental toughness that maybe only serious hills on the bike can approach.

(Okay, I'm done with my rant...I said it was a soapbox issue for me...)

    Todd,

Totally agree ... with my very limited experience of only two triathlons since October of last year, I can wholeheartedly endorse the notion that tris are won and lost with the run.  Really puts everything else into perspective, especially the swim ... just relax and do it, because you can make up whatever you have to on the bike and run.  And you can have a killer bike ride and blow away your AG, but like me, they ALL caught up and passed as I was shuffling along on the run.

I've always hated running distances.  I played football for 9 years throughout grade school and high school, so sprints and power always trumped endurance/distance.  Yeah, I was in great shape and could play all day long, but I hated running anything over 100 yards!  Now, I actually find myself enjoying a long run, more so for the feeling of accomplishment than anything else, but I don't dread having to put on the shoes and hit it.  I still love the bike WAY more, though

So my workouts lately have been derailed by next years training partner:

That is Paisley, my 8 1/2 week blue merle Australian Shepherd puppy. It so much harder to get out the door to a workout when she is giving me those puppy eyes. Come this time next year though, she'll be busting my chops on pretty much every run. These dogs are FAST and can go forever. She'll easily be able to go on runs up to 15 miles, maybe longer. 10 more months before I can start runnning with her though.

Okay, Matt that is the cutest dog!!

And, yes he'll be dragging you by next year, maybe by the middle of summer.

I agree with you guys about the run. I never considered myself a runner, but in the past year I've embraced it and really love running. Doing those bricks leading up to any tri was so helpful in realizing you're not going to have great legs right away, but if you stick with it for a half mile or so, you'll get them and be strong.

Great times on the runs, too, Morgan. Great progress. I'm trying to increase my pace as well and it makes for tougher workouts.

Susie: Glad to know the sun is appearing earlier for you.

I didn't feel the earthquake either.

Okay, this weekend, I'm taking a bike skills clinic organized by the cycling group I ride with sometimes. I'll let you know what I learn. Also have a long 12 miler run on Sunday. Probably my last long run before the 1/2.

I so agree.  I can't say I love the process of running, but I love what it's doing for my weight and confidence.  As for running an 8:30 min/mile pace, I would LOVE to get there.  Running a 10 min/mile pace for me is good now.

Can't decide whether to go run with the run club at a charity event Saturday or go to the gym where I can bike, swim and run too.  It would be hard to go to the run (out of town) and get back in time to do much else.

Also, I'm sniffling again.  I've had two bad colds already this winter.  I have no idea what the heck is up with this.

    Have a great weekend.

I should have put a caption in the pictures. In the first picture, he's leaning that way because of the wind ...

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE if Lance Armstrong did Ironman. That would be awesome. I always wondered if he would try triathlon again.

    so jealous!

I had a sheltie puppy before I met my spouse, but it turns out he was born without kidneys. He only lived to be 10 months old, and even with his illness he was lightning fast. My spouse doesn't like shepherds, so we ended up with a deranged Lab. Now, she could run forever, but she pulls and pulls and pulls and pulls and no amount of training or choke collar or treat can seem to get that out of her. But I had taken her on jogs of 6 miles, and she didn't even seem phased by the distance at all.
