Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread rottieguy - 2009-10-12 4:59 PM The weather in Michigan has basically been crap most of this year and our fall season which normally has some pretty decent days has been bad this year. The last two weeks I've been on the trainer for my long rides and have managed a 5 hour and 6 hour and 20 minute ride. I'm due for a 6 hour ride Thursday and see the forecast is for 49 and rain, so looks like I'll be on the trainer again, thou making it back to 6 hours on the trainer could drive me over the edge, so I added some intensity to todays 3:30 ride. Not to mention I haven't had an OWS in a few weeks now and with temps in the 30's overnight I'm sure the lake we normally swim in has gotten quite cold. Guess it's time to order the bootys I hope my bad weather karma doesn't follow me to NC Me too. I am a cold wuss! You win the HTFU award for putting in so much time on a trainer! |

Extreme Veteran 725 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread keyone - 2009-10-12 2:21 PM mr2tony - 2009-10-12 2:11 PM So there I was, all dressed in spandex, cold weather gear abounded, only to look outside and see six inches of snow on the ground Saturday morning. I figured if it cleared up by noon I'd go. No luck. So here I am, a month before the race and only one 83-miler under my belt. Will I EVER get in my century??? That totally sucks. How does the weather look for next weekend? Can't imagine a 6 hour trainer ride either, but might be worth HTFU'ing if you can. You know, I read an article once that said shorter workouts with high intensity bursts are as good for endurance as long slow training. I don't necessarily believe it, but maybe you could do 3 hours worth of spinervals DVDs on the trainer and it would equal a 6 hour ride outdoors. Might be worth a try if it's all you got! I have done 2 hours worth of Spinervals, and I was suffering so much that I didn't have time to get bored.
I did a 100 mile 5h 30min trainer ride on Sunday. I did about 8 - 10 century rides before IM Louisville in Aug, but have not done a century since. That was one long trainer ride, but I felt like I needed to get it in. You should be fine if you have done some 80 mile rides. Anything beyond 85 miles is mental. |

I'd be in for a BT gathering. This place got good reviews on Google maps, has a varied menu, (beer, tho who drinks that the night before a race?) and has party rooms: http://www.fattonysitalianpub.comI have to have dinner at 5pm, not much later. I highly recommend Fat Tony's! We also have an Olive Garden, Carabba's, Elizabeth's Pizza, Antonio's and a Macaroni Grill in town that are all really good. Wilmington has a ton of restaurants so you should be able to find somewhere good for a BT gathering! |

253 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread So, I thought I'd chime in about the weather/ indoor training. Rottieguy is right, the Michigan fall has made outdoor training miserable, so I just finished up what I will call "mental toughness week" which was capped off with these three long workouts last wednesday- 3:09:00 run= 20 miles ON THE TREADMILL saturday- 6:03:00 trainer ride last night- 192 lengths continuous in a 25M pool- yes, 3 miles in a pool for 1:22:00 Only a few more weeks! Please, I want some sunshine for this race |

If you can't get outside for a ride, then the trainer is the next best thing. I definitely think it works the mental aspect of the day to come. |

Expert 749 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread Looks like a lot of us might end up on the trainer for a long distance group trainer ride this weekend! Rain and a high in the 40's here will keep me locked inside on the sweat machine! I'll personally be riding on Saturday morning, beginning around 6 until - well, 10 - 12 depending on my ironwill!! The good news is the dr. cleared me for exercise today (I kind of cheated on Sunday and rode anyway when I wasn't supposed to!) and the poison oak seems to be clearing. I'm all jacked up on steroids so maybe this will be a great training week! |

If it's like the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, they won't take reservations on a weekend night, and you have to get there before 5:30 to avoid a 2 hour wait. One reason my preference is early! |

I'm actually kind of enjoying the weather since I think it's probably closer to what race conditions will be like than the nicer weather. But who knows. I have to say, my feet got cold last night after about an hour in the 38 degree rain. |

Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread I'm at the beach this weekend and will ride most of the course tomorrow. Should be a nice day for it. This evening I ran on the beach, and I ran down to the inlet where the B2B race will start. It was just pure luck that I ended up there. It was a beautiful spot on the beach, a lovely sunset (we will see the sunrise), sand dunes speckled with sea oats. Really makes me excited for this race! When I was done running, my muscles were sore (beach running takes alot out of you!). I sat in the surf to take an 'ice bath'. It was not cold at all. No colder than Lake Jordan, which is around 72deg. I was chilly walking back to my car, tho. The air temp was 57 and very windy. Bag#3 Special needs bag for the half way point at the bike. Bag#4 T2 bag. This will be delivered to the transition at the Battleship Bag#5 Special needs bag for the halfway of the bike. Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread I rode most of the bike course yesterday. I screwed up making the cue sheet on google maps, so I ended up riding it in reverse. Crap, I wondered why we saw so many people riding the course backwards, haha! Really glad I scoped it out, tho, as I learned some things. - It was freaking cold at 8am. I had prepared for a 50 degree start temperature. But, being cloudy and Very, very windy, it felt much colder. I had not brought gloves, so I stopped at a gas station to buy a cheapo pair of mens cotton work gloves. They worked fine. You will need gloves. Bring some cheapo kind that you can throw away later. I had bike shorts, jersey, arm warmers, newspaper stuffed into my jersey. That wasn't enough, so I put on a warmup jacket that I luckily had in my car. A friend loaned me some leg warmers. I was still chilly for the first hour. My toes were very cold, wish I had toe covers. Then I got warmed up, so I ditched the newspaper on the end of some random driveway. When the sun finally came out, I got warmer, so peeled off the gloves. After noon, I stopped to pee and took off the jacket and tied it around my waist. I think I will skip leg warmers, as they aren't easy to peel off. On race day, if it's about a 50 degree start, I will wear: toe covers, arm warmers, jersey with newspaper stuffed into it, windbreaker zip-up vest (might try to find that at a thrift store so I can ditch it), cheap gloves, bike shorts. If rain is in the forecast, I'll be sol. I don't have cold weather rain gear. - we rode all the way up 421 with a headwind and it felt slightly uphill. That was very tough. Luckily, on race day, it will be the reverse, so that last 37 miles should be fast. I hope the wind is the same direction! - 421 was boring. The last part was very industrial and busy. The final stretch leading to the battleship includes two badass bridges over a river and highway. One was really short steep climb. I like hills, so I enjoyed getting up out of the saddle to 'dance on the pedals' as they say in the Tour de France. Just mentally be prepared for this at the end and you'll be fine. - between those two bridges above, there is a huge blob of dried concrete (must have spilled out of a truck or something). I think it was right on the white line. I ran right over it, duh! Watch out for that, plus a lot of debris in the shoulder. I hope they close off one lane of the road in this section. It was kind of a major highway, and I did not like riding on it. Big trucks going by me at 70 miles an hour! - there were some nice little rollers on the loopy part of the course that includes 210 and 41. Very pretty country side. Some head wind, some tailwind, some false flats up and some down. - I was riding with a group. Whenever I was in front or off the back by myself (mostly by choice) I watched my speed just to see what I can expect on race day. Sometimes I'd be going 16mph, and other times 23. It's just the wind and false flats that made the difference. On race day, just don't worry about that number. Stay in your 'zone'. If it's a headwind and your not going as fast as you want, dont' worry. Just hunker down and try to become the smallest shape possible to cut thru the wind. But don't try to push a certain speed, or you'll trash yourself. And, remember that you'll make it up going back down 421!! - There were a couple of railroad tracks where my water bottle launched out of the cage in the back. Really got to figure out how to keep that from happening! Here's my Garmin data, fyi. http://connect.garmin.com/player/16503561 PS: those two badass bridges are also on the run course. Short but steep. Don't worry about it, just be mentally prepared for it. And no shame in walking a short steep climb in an ironman. |
