Okay, I'm going to open a whole can of worms here, but I'm sure many of the other mom's in this group will back me up. Steve, pay close attention to the things mentioned in that article.  Ever since my girls were born I can not jump on a trampoline or do jumping jacks without peeing myself and for the first 4 months I had to learn to run without peeing on myself.  I am convinced some of the issues I am having with my hips and this injury are from giving birth to 2 thanksgiving turkeys, and  I blame the residual layer of fat over my tummy on them as well.  Not that I would change any of it, but get ready to hear about bodily complaints you would have never thought Kim would have. Wink

I never even heard the word episiotomy before my wife gave birth to our kids. Our experienes have parallels to yours, although I have never seen Robin on a trampoline and she did not pee herself AFAIK.

Yep, I am pretty sure it's more painful to listen to all the whining they do vs. actually giving birth ; )

c-section's here.  so wasn't bad!

jvanis - 2010-04-09 4:16 PM Well, day 2 of awesomeness.  So yesterday I rocked a swim and run at paces I was quite happy with.  I am changing offices this weekend so we were told to leave at noon which I figured would happen so I had prepped my bike last night getting it ready to ride outside.  I wanted to do my friday bike workout (4 sets 5 minutes at 85,90,95,100 FTP w/ 5 mins at 80%)  I also wanted to take advantage of the day, so I said why not do the workout and keep going.

I was about 12 minutes into my ride when I see a guy on a bike turn onto the road I am riding, and  I was sitting at a light.  Sticking with my workout I did my wattages, and finally on my last 5 minute rep, I passed him, only to have a few minutes left and then backing off to 80% he rode up on me and said man keep it up you are pushing me, I shoot back that I had been following him for a solid half hour not knowing if I would catch him ever or not.  Turns out we turned around at the same place and road most of the way back.  Fellow tri guy, was a good ride today!

The ride - 35 miles, average wattage 179 (eh), but averaged 19.9 MPH over that distance(including time stopped at lights etc).  Seeing as I have only done this distance once before last fall, I was pretty happy, about a MPH faster than I was last fall, and I have a LOT left in me, either distance or pushing harder, looks like those killer workouts indoors actually paid off.  I have a good feeling about this season

DAY 2 of AWESOMENESS!!!!   YOU DA MAN!!!!!   but the question we all want answered is which hydration system did you use?

Funny I just posted that For the ST crowd, its excessive, but I like to make sure I have liquids Drank a sip of water every 3 minutes, and a couple of swigs of Infinit every 10, looks to be a good combo for my duration rides.

SSMinnow - 2010-04-09 2:52 PM Linda---I am so happy for you and your family...what a great shot of Connor! Amazing what the human body and spirit can do!

I do have a question for Linda and the other swimmers...how in the blazes do you keep track of laps?  Today was my practice HIM swim so a 2000 and I started to break them into 4x500s in my head, but then the glaze came over me and I had no clue where I was....I had to ballpark the last 1000....I stopped looked at my watch, knew I couldn't be done that fast and kept going....not very precise!

It's all meditative for me. I simply say the number the entire time I am swimming the length (1-1-1-1-1-1-1,2-2-2-2-2-2-2, etc.). I think I have done it so much and for so long that I can meditate on a number and also still have fleeting thoughts of other things. I also break things up. Today I did a set of 1000's and I'd sort of think of it is 2x500 or 5x200 or 10x100, and then around 600 yards I'd think about the 400 remaining, 300 remaining, etc.

(edited to fix typos)

That is how I do it too.  I sync with rhythm with my strokes as I am saying the number over and over again......but I do sometimes zone out and lose count.  The Sportcount looks like a nice option to feed my gadget fix.

Suzy - all my swim workouts are pretty much splitted, so I rarely go more than 200 per "rest". So, it's easy to break it up...200/25=8 times back and forth. I think in quarters (like money). And I just count how many times I need to go back and forth, and I just mentally keep track of it.

When I write out my workouts, I put how many times I press LAP, it would be when it appears on the card so my watch lap number matches. Like this

4x200 - 4
2x150 - 6
6x50   -12

Hope that kind of make sense. It works for me, so it may not work for someone else. :-)  I always get lost if I have to do like 4x100, and I forget if I'm on my 2nd lap of 100 or am I on my 3rd?

It may be different if someone has to do something like 1x800 or 1x1000. I'll deal with it when I do it. :-)

Thanks John.  Just finished up getting the bike ready and loaded.  It is a going to be a very early start since it is an hour drive there in the morning.

I am really looking forward to this one.....only #2 for me, but feel so much more prepared than before my first one.  And that is because of this MG.  It has been a great resource, one I wished I had before my first one.

Look for the race report tomorrow afternoon.

Ha Ha - I read that article a few weeks ago.  Be prepared Steve - you will see and hear things that you NEVER thought you would over the next 7-9 months.  Tony was strong during that time but now he will stick his fingers in his ears if anything like that comes up.

As far as what Tracy said - there are big reasons why women have kids and not men.  The human race would have died out long ago if it was up to the guys. And although I do not have bladder issues probably b/c I did not have my kids naturally, I still look in the mirror and think OMG my stomach still looks like I came home from the hospital 2 weeks ago.  I'm not sure it's every going to be right again.

Good luck and be strong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tjtryon - 2010-04-09 1:47 PM OK, I forgot to mention my "secret" weapon for a long run like this. I've been playing around with this all spring before runs and such. My secret weapon is blackened shrimp alfredo, made with whole wheat pasta, zatarans and mixed up salt on the shrimp and some ragu or bertolis alfredo. It just sits well on my stomach. My plan is to have a small cup of this every hour or so - and eat it cold. I've practiced this a few times, and it seems to be fine. If it helps, maybe we can start a trend, shrimp/lobster/crab legs at every drink table.

Holy Cow you have an iron stomach!   Good Luck on your race.

Havin'Fun - 2010-04-09 1:44 PM Thanks everyone for your kind words.  We really appreciate them.

On a positive note, last Thursday Connor's Neurosurgeon gave him a 100% release.  Then, last night while I was at my daughters soccer practice a lady hands me this local kids magazine that is coming out today (turns out it is her magazine).  Connor is in one of the pictures on the cover and in a story in the magazine.  The picture was taken during the last game he played (two days before the accident).  He is #22, carrying the ball........

Awesome News!!!!  Glad he's on the other side of it now.  Great Pic!

Ok you can totally laugh at me but I keep track of my laps using the alphabet.

I have tried time and time again to use numbers but I always mess up. So instead I use the alphabet

For example: If I am doing a 500 set that means I need 10 laps so I will use the first 10 letters of the alphabet; A-J
So for the first lap I talk to myself using the letter A

A- Apples, I like apples, I am going to have an apple after my swim, Asparagus, we had asparagus last night for dinner, Ali- Ali is a nice girl..... etc

Lap 2
B- Bananas, I bought two bananas to work today, I really like bananas... etc.

Lap 3
C- Cactus, cactus are funny looking, I wouldn't want to touch one, Cake, I could really go for some cake right now

You get the clue!

Like I said laugh all you want but it really works well for me. I never forget what letter I am on and it keeps my mind occupied. Some days I will try to theme my sets. Like Wednesdays set was words that reminded me of my dad. Sometimes I do food, Sometimes I find motivational things for me. Just anything that comes to mind.

Weird. I thought I answered this and my answer isn't here. Maybe I can't figure out which buttons to push to post an actual message.

Anyway, the answer went something like this:

No, I drive a white minivan. Or a white Camry. Or a blue Lemond Versailles. Or a green Diamondback. And maybe next week (one can hope??), I can add a new color to the cycling arsenal.

If you think you saw me cruisin' around in a 630i rag top, 'twasn't I, as I was busy at home testing the elasticity of my driveway. (It's not very forgiving, in case you were wondering.

Holy Cow....(in my best WI accent), a guy goes on vacation with the family for a week and not only does the mentor group change the locks and leave town to a new address, but posts 15 pages of data with all sorts of new faces and names.

Still outta town until Monday....maybe Birdy and the powers to be will have me back....I was always a bit of a "Lurker" anyway!

Oh and before I go I gotta give a shout out to my "Hockey Badgers" with the big win yesterday in the Frozen Four, maybe we can notch another National Champsionship tomorrow night.    Go Bucky!

Hey Dino, we have the grandfather rule for all former MG'ers who want to come back.. Stop by more often and good luck keeping up...totally agree on the Badgers.  GO BUCKY!

Good luck Glen.....be strong!

Jeff--sounds like you are having a great trainng streak.  I had the Speedfill for a short time, but found drinking out of the straw really hard.  I never seemed to get enough fluid per pull.  I know Ryan has the same unit and has no issue.

Thanks for all the great advice on how to count laps....it is funny when I was going through my neurosis related to the fear of water, my former coach had me use the alphabet so I focused on something else.  I started with A and then came up with all the words that started with that letter for 25y at a time.  It has bad Karma for me .  I have seen the Sportcount and that is the way I am going to go....it will allow me to focus on the ten million other things I am supposed to be thinking about while swimming.  I really wish I had mastered this as a child like so many of you!

{Thinking a smart comment, but refraining from saying it, as I am sure it will somehow spin back to me not having problems with getting liquid through the straw}

GoFaster- Sorry missed your name, I cant claim to be an expert, but have been training with power a few months and have done some reading, my watts/kg suck too, but there are a couple people in the group that have some knowledge

Short break for me. 13.1 done so far and you know what? I feel like I've run a half marathon. Still hoping to get 50k more done before the sun comes up. Mile 8.5 was the occasion of a pie eating contest (I won) - don't know if the inclusion of that was smart in a run. I feel fat, but still capable of an all nighter.

Linda. Great news about Connor. great pic too.

Suzy: I use a set of flippers. Evey 10 laps I turn one flipper over. That way if I lose count I just flip it back over to the beginning and multiply by 10. (More Canadian math)

John: I see you're not the caveman I am. You actually have a watch /counter you can wear in the water.

Trevor: now that is what I call good larnin. Counting. who'd a thunk it. and from us Canadians too.
