Pic of the second set of 26 stairs, immediately after the first set:

wow... doesn't that look like - - - fun.....

That should be interesting if/when there are a mass of people trying to get up those steps at the same time....

Ya know what would be cool, if they covered all the stairs with a six-inch layer of dirt, then wet it down with fire hoses and made it a partial-Tough Mudder obstacle course!!  They could easily turn IMNYC into the first hybrid-Ironman

And for a second obstacle ... this is how you'd have to cross the George Washington Bridge

Oh, I'm excited, very excited. However I'm also part of the slow moving IMTX thread so I'm pacing myself with posts, don't want too go to hard too early . Just over a month till TX, then this thread will have my full attention. Can't wait.

Long run for me today. I included the set of stairs below at about mile 10 of 13. It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be... I think I'm gonna try to work these into the last few miles of many of my long runs from here on out.

I am going to be in NY this weekend and am hoping to run part of the course on Saturday or Sunday.
Any advice from someone who has taken a look?

I haven't taken a look but I'd be really curious what you think.  I'm hoping to head down next month to bike/run the course.

I am staying in Manhattan, so my plan is to take the subway up to the GW, run across to NJ and run down to T2 and the 4 mile stretch that will be part of the race (at least the first hill). Then, run back over the bridge to 116, which is near where I am staying.

the weather doesn't look good, but I don't mind a little suffering. I may have to pick up a waterproof camera so i can document my enjoyment.
If nothing else, I am looking forward to running over the bridge.

You know you can't ride the actual bike course, right? You could ride out of transition, but you can't bike on the Palisades Parkway. You can ride Route 9W which parallels the Parkway, though, and terrain should be fairly similar...

So I had to take a quick trip to NY Fri/Sat and was able to run the beginning of the course this morning, from Ross Dock parking area, up and back for one loop 3.5 miles each way, and then continue on up to the bridge at the base of the stairs. Just short of 9 miles. Here are some thoughts based on this experience:

1 - It wasn't quite as bad as I expected from looking at the posted run profile. The big hill (Dykman Hill) is long and pretty steep at about the midpoint of each leg of the loop, but otherwise there aren't any really tough long stretches. Of course, this is off a nights sleep, not a 112 mile bike ride.
2 - The climb up Dykman is a little worse heading south, with the steepest section at the start of the climb from that direction. Overall, the southbound leg of the loop is tougher, and the second time through and then running up to the bridge is going to be the toughest stretch of the run, to be immediately followed, of course, by the stairs.
3 - The .3 mile climb up from the dock is pretty steep and will take some patience coming out of both transitions to not overcook right off the bat.
4 - After getting up the hill from T2, the first mile of the run loop is a really nice gentle downhill that will be an OK place to run fast and get the early run anxiety out. This stretch on both loops will be the easiest two miles of running, I think.
5 - Exiting the loops up to the bridge isn't too bad, except for a steep section exiting the park and starting up River Road, maybe for 200 yards. This is going to be a tough little stretch on both the bike and run - there is a hard right turn right in the middle of the steepest pitch to deal with.
6 - The pavement on Hudson Drive isn't as bad as it looks on video, but there are small potholes here and there that can turn an ankle. Will definitely need to pay attention.
7 - I don't know exactly where the turnaround is going to be, but 3.5 miles falls right around a short, steep hill, hopefully we will turn back just before it.
8 - The run course is going to be interesting, and I think pass by fairly quickly mentally.
9 - Standing on the swim barge ready to start, the bridge and transition are going to look really far away. Need to be prepared for this and not get psyched out.
10 - This race is going to be really cool, can't wait.

Where were you riding over RR tracks? No worse for the wear other than the hand? More importantly, hows the bike? lol

Thanks for the report.

Once you get over the bridge, the run on the green way is flat.  I think after crossing the GW Bridge back into Manhattan its pretty much a cruise control hill.

Any idea how the Dykeman Hill compares to the ski jump hill or Sentential hills at IMLP?

Random aside -- Dykeman Hill makes me think of Peter Dykeman Campbell from Mad Men -- I wonder if there's a (fictitious) connection.

I was heading down centerville pkwy heading towards th state line. Very little traffic heading out at 6 am, not much more on the way back. Missed on yesterday's great weather. Bike is fine, my hip is a bit sore but nothing that'll slow me down.

Hey IM US Championship New York City Team - how is everyone. I have not posted in a few weeks but I have been paying attention. Work and training are keeping me busy. 13 weeks into my official plan and all is well (knock wood). I really appreciate all the information that is being posted from all of you that have been on or close to the course. Please keep it coming for those of us north of the border.

KC

Absolutely, it's going to look so long- even at IMLP, where it's just a hair under .6 miles the long way (2 loop course), the buoys look a long way away.  You can't focus on the furthest away buoy- just focus on swimming from one buoy to another.

I've never done IMLP, but the elevation profiles make Dyckman Hill look about half again as high as the big hill heading into town at LP. My 310xt did a lousy job capturing elevation on Saturday, but I think it is a 250-275 foot climb that we need to go up and down 4 times, so it is safe to say it will be a tougher run than IMLP. I did IMCDA last year and have done Savageman, and this hill tops anything on those courses, although thankfully it isn't near as bad as The Wall on the bike at Savageman. The good news is that the last 9 miles are going to be nice and flat, the challenge will just be getting that far.

Glad to hear it about the hills not being as bad as the wall! Not so good about the run though.

So, I did manage to run up and over the bridge on Sunday, however, I didn't end up running the course aside from the bridge.

I think you others who have done more specifics have better info.

Also, for anyone riding, 9W does parallel the palisades, but only for the first 12 miles. That means there are about 14-15 miles you can't get access to on a bike. No other roads parallel the palisades as closely.

Now this is testing my memory, which I don't profess to be in good working order, but...
Having done IMLP, and run/biked those hills there, and having run Dyckman Hill, I tend to think Dyckman is worse. The hill heading into town at LP is quite steep, definitely shorter than Dyckman, but then again, it does continue on up as you make the left at the light.

And from the race website: "The two loop course requires athletes to run Dyckman Hill 4 times - about 1600 total feet in elevation!"

Ok...it's about time we get serious with our training. No more distractions!! Focus, focus, focus!!

Not quite true- while the West Side bike path is basically flat, there is at least one climb into Riverside Park to where we finish.

So with Ironman St. George turning into a 70.3 - will IMLP or IMNYC be the toughest Ironman course in North America?

It looks as though LP has just over 1,000 more feet of climbing.  But IMNCY hands-down has a much-much more brutal run.  1600 feet gain from 4 repeats up one climb alone, not mentioning the steps that also must be traversed 4X.  And if there are heavy rains the days leading up to the race, the Hudson can be choppy and it sounds like the tide will be against athletes to start (according to the IMNCY website).  So yeah, compared to Mirror Lake, I think the swim will also pose more of a challenge.  Also the weather will likely be hotter and more humid than LP.  Based on these criteria I'm going to say IMNYC clearly will be the tougher Ironman.

Having said all that, I plan to race IMNYC in 2013 or 2014

Now get back to your stair climb and hill repeats people!!! T-minus 101 Days to go!!!
