QUESTION:

Does anyone know how to force a data transfer with the Garmin 310xt/ANT?? I'm not totally smitten with the new format of data upload here, and my last data transfer never "took." Now I'm back from a run and data isn't transferring, which it normally does automagically when the Garmin is near the computer. Have unplugged/replugged ANT thingee. Arrrrgh. I'm a slave to my data as many of you know, so this is really bugging me!!!

Well there are still 9 more days left in 2011 but with today's swim I just hit my first of three goals for the year:I passed 350,000 yds. of swimming for the year. Might hit 360K with a little luck.

Still need about 9 miles of running and 90 miles of biking to hit those goals. I wish I had more running this year but with physical therapy and rehab 750-760 is the best I could do. As Suzy refered to I had achillies tendon issues and my doc was useless. My PT (Thanks for the reference Tracy) figured out on my first visit that I have a 1/2" leg length discrepency. Over time you try to compensate for the difference and that causes another problem which causes another and so on. Finding the root of the problem is key. I also have to work on my flexibility. I have strong quads and put out a lot of power on the bike, but my hamstrings need a great deal of work as they are very tight.

I do a series of strength exercises for my lower legs to and to work on my balance too.

I'm not sure if you got the 405 or 410 -- the one with the bezel is all I know.

Harumph. I'm Garmin-sad at the moment. Arrrrgh!!

Mike_D - 2011-12-22 8:39 AM Injury Recovery Question ---  I've been resting/rehabbing a knee/leg injury since early November (sprained quad tendon), following orthopedic docs recommendations. He's green lighted me to start running, and I did go for a slow 5k run on Sunday. All was well. But here is my problem. I'm kind of freaked out about possibly reinjuring this. Every time I feel a twinge of anything in the knee, I think "oh, I need to rest more! I shouldn't do anything". I fear I'm just making myself insane, and the obvious solution is to continue to ease back into running (and biking) by taking it slow and rebuilding. YET -- my brain is on red alert. Is this just a mental exercise in going out and putting foot to road/pedal, and ignoring my overly cautious sense of self preservation? I felt fine after Sunday's run , and had no after affects the following days.

I've been in your position.  After I rehabbed a 4th met stress fracture for 5 months I thought every niggle was an issue.  At the time my PT gave me this advice: if it's sore running, quit.  If it's a little sore afterwards that is "probably" ok.  If it is sore the next day, take two days off and then try again.

I've never heard of a quad sprain? which quad? are you talking tendonitis at the top of the knee (basically insertion point)?  What type of rehabbing did you do?  I'm a little suprised your doc gave you the green light to go run 3.1m versus some walk/run to ease into it (e.g. walk 3', run 3', up to 3.1m, etc.)

There is nothing wrong with being cautious and to me the best approach is shorter running mixed in with walking to strengthen it and the rest of the muscles that haven't been used in a while.

Thanks! The diagnosis was tendonitis/bursitis/and some cartilege inflamation. rehab was rest, anitinflamatories, ice, and more rest. The 3.1 distance was my idea, but it was a run/walk, not a straight run.  thanks for confirming the low & slow approach. My big paranoia is blowing up 2012 by having this resurface. I'll be out there tomorrow giving it another test.

Went through a little of what you're going through last year during the early stages of my marathon training.  Had a nagging bout of ITBS and nearly worried myself out of running the marathon all together.  Turned out that most of my troubles were mental after I got the inflammation to subside.  Little twinges once in a while are very normal for my body.  I found that as long as they don't persist into the following day I can pretty much ignore them. One more of those little battles that I had to win in my head.  Continue to listen to your body, but don't let the worry take over.  Keep it low and slow until you regain a god base and you'll most likely be fine.  Good Luck!

I think we all agree on being cautious. The point I am a big believer in is determining the root cause of the problem.  Rehab is great for healing but if it didn't determine the root cause and teach you how to correct it then you've only applied a band-aide.  I'm not referencing your specific condition; but in general I am a HUGE supporter of proper warm-ups/cool downs, stretching, the foam roller, and a run gait analysis.  Take care of your body and make sure you have proper running form or you will be sorry.  I think almost everyone here has experience with this.

I second what Tracy said.  Identifying the CAUSE of the injury is often overlooked.

Let me THIRD this!  I have just learned the hard way that I cannot be lazy about my stretching or my trigger point massage because the root cause of the recent return of "almost plantar fasciitis--in this case a heel spur" was due to the fact that my calf/soleus muscle insertion points get very tight and if I don't roll them they will result in heel inflammation.  I caught it very quickly this time and have been able to train through it by religiously icing after every run and getting back on the crazy stretching and TP/foam rolling horse...every night for at least 10 passes per calf and I am 99% there.

Thank goodness, just in time for my last long run this weekend before Goofy in 2 weeks!  Oy.

Who is this Kim that does unmentionables in the woods???  Is she back in the MG this time around? Innocent

I'm nearly 100% sure it happened on a specific run where I went out and ran too far and ran up/down too many hills for the amount of running I was doing. Up until I did that run, I'd never had a knee issue running my entire life, including a while back when I was an avid daily runner.

You should have called me!  I would have sold you mine dirt cheap!   I like the Xterra a lot better.

Let's do this: Send it to me so I can try it on. I will take a picture and ask John what he thinks . I had an old Orca with the shoulders cracked out of it before. This suit is awesome compared to that. I hear it's cold in CdA.

Garmin problem solved. Thanks. Did a soft reset and then it uploaded my workouts. Yippee!!! Now I can eat breakfast!!

Oh, and I just got some fun new "gear." Wool running shirts, per Julia's suggestion. Excited about them! Went for a run in one of them this morning. A bit brisk in the breeze early on, but then felt nice. Was very due for new long-sleeved running shirts (only tend to use race tech shirts, plus two heavier ones I have that are 8-ish years old) and these are really neat! Yay!!

This is the only gear I'm expecting from Santa.  I was disappointed there wasn't one on my car when I got back from Canada so I'm hoping this will be corrected Sunday!

Wow, Chet, I am pretty sure when we briefly met in Vegas, you do not have a 26" inseam...would be a very cool picture with the legs coming up to your knees!!  Nice Suit, btw!

Name: Tiana

Background:  I swam my senior year in high school. I wasn't the fastest but I had a lot of fun. Then in 1989  I injured my right hip and leg. I had nerve and muscle damage.  It took until about 1993 through lots of physical therapy and lots of water exercise to get to the point I could walk without a limp. In Jan 2010 I knew I needed to get back exercising and knew if I had a race to train for I'd be more motivated. I did three sprints in 2010.

Family Status: Single, I was a foster mom for about 5 years and had 12 kids during that time. 10 kids went back home to their families. My last two little girls were not able go back to their mom and last spring I was able to adopt them. My two girls (3,6) have lived with me for about 2.5 years.

Training: I'd like to build on base bike miles and  slowly improve my running. And get back in the pool do a lot of swimming and aqua running.

2011 Races:  Because of my injured ankle I only did bike events Like the Salt Lake City Marathon bike tour. You get to ride the Marathon course before the runners.  And tried mountains biking on mountain trails kinda scary.

2012 Races: I'm still trying to figure out my schedule.

What makes me a good Mentee: I seem to do better when I'm logging my workouts and keeping up with others. I still have a lot to learn.

Tiana

I hope I am still welcome.. I Need to get my butt in gear I really haven't done anything since my detroit half marathon.

But I did sign up for my first HIM at REV3 Cedar Point for 2012.
