I am a biomechanical night mare.  Bilateral ACL reconstructions plus 4-5 more knee scopes plus 5 ankle surgeries have left my biomechanics and feet really not so normal.  If I run a nanosecond more than I should I get injured.  I have worked on core/butt strengthening a lot recently and look what it got me.

I had my longest training week so far this week. I am tired, and a bit GRUMPY, but I made it and actually took today off! Whoo hoo!
Did a 5 hour bike/30 min brick earlier in the week, a super hilly 30 mile ride and 8 mile run on Thursday, and then ran 17 miles yesterday (not to mention the swims and other runs in between- oh, and a race on Sunday of last week). I have recovered well and will tackle my bike ride tomorrow, but I could go to sleep! Hard to not get grouchy with my kids when I am worn out. I keeping telling myself that we only have 6-7 more hard weeks and then it's taper and race! Hope everyone is doing okay with their injuries. Hate to hear that. (( Feel better soon!

Yess !!! ... It's getting closer and closer.

I had my best 1/2 IM race ever two weeks ago and most of my workouts are going really well lately. Nonetheless, here the weather is starting to get colder and colder, summer is definitely over and we are having our first frost warnings, those last weeks are going to be a little tougher but now is not the time to slack off, we are in the payoff zone now !

I need to comment on the latests posts by socks and DavidKSC. I agree 100% with what you are saying. I too only do minimal run training. I am following Don Fink Intermediate and working up towards a long run of 3 hours MAX. That was enough for me to do a 12hr IM last year in Tremblant and to hope to do a 11hr in Florida this year. Everybody is different, but i think more workouts would yield only marginally better results and would require sacrificing more precious family time !

See you in just a few weeks now !

Great job on your half!!! I will only run 3 hours max to but will be about 20 miles. Maybe I will run slower or cut it back 10 minutes??

Hi kids whats up? Just got my bike back from the shop.  Bottom bracket shot, rear deraileur broken, head set broken, needed a new chain and general cleaning etc, bearing on rear wheel worn out.  Guess that is why it was feeling grindy Knee still not well nor is my hip Keep trying to run everyday. Can't make it to the end of the block.  At least I can walk without knee pain and I can walk down the stairs now

Gotta quick question. Calves are cramping on my swims. Almost to the point of severe pain. Have to stop and stretch or drown! Not having any other issues with them cramping. Not on the bike or the run?? Lack of water? Or lack of electrolytes?

I wished we could say the weather was turning here. It is still in the middle 90's and it is tough to stay hydrated. I can't wait to have a bike ride or run where dehydration or heat exhaustion is not a threat. Not to mention the middle of the day is about off limits.

I am on the Fink plan too. I am following the run to a 3 hour max. I've had to go over the time on the swim and bike to get in the longer workouts.

One thing I am quickly learning is not only what products are more easily consumed, but also how difficult it is to get it out of packaging going 17 mph (or 15 or 12) down the road! Tips on how others handle this - Or is it just me?

A tip to make it easier to open the packages is to open them before you start the ride. You don't have to rip the top off or anything just get it started so that its much easier to do while riding. This also gets rid of the air in the package so they take up less room.

I generally agree with Fitzgerald's stuff (and most everything in that article) but his tip #2 is borderline negligent, IMO.  People are going to read that and go out and do some 26 mile training runs and wonder why their training and recovery sucks and why they got hurt.  Holy moly do I think that is horrible advice!

Yup, a little clip with the scissors before you head out makes them much easier to deal with.  Some things you can actually unwrap.

I actually put a pair of kid's safety scissors in my bag on race morning to do just this. It's so frustrating trying to open some of these gels/bars while riding, so just open them or clip them before putting them in your bento box and it makes your day go alot smoother.

Thanks for the tips - I kind of figured pre-opening as the solution. Just makes those long ride preparations longer doesn't it . I used to do consumer goods marketing and it just bugs me that the manufacturers don't recognize this -- biggest sinner is Gatorade gels - I even have a tough time getting into those with scissors.

Socks - Man you are having a rough patch! It can only go up from here sounds like a complete bike rebuild. I got peaved because I need to get my bottom bracket repacked last time I rode in the rain to get rid of an annoying clack-clack of the bearings, I guess, losing lube. The bike shop said he sees a lot of customers bringing their bike in every month during season. I'm just doing one more tune up before FL (pending other rainy training days).

Is anyone here by chance doing Keowah Island (SC) Oly next weekend? I am planning on some extended training after I do the race - haven't decided bike or run and would like to do an OWS Saturday afternoon before the race (Sunday).

On the leg cramping in the swim - I speak as to the cause. I know it happens occasionally to me either calf or many times in my foot. I wonder if it is due to muscularity of the calf - do you use a "stick" to massage your calf muscles. I have it sitting next to my couch and give my legs, especially calves a good session while I'm sitting watching TV or before/after workouts. I have built a lot of muscle in there, especially as I am a forefoot runner and from the bike. Just a thought that the toe-pointedness of swim kicks requires a different stretch in those muscles ...?

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I just finished IMOO last weekend. Wow, what a place. Great course and the crowd support was insane. Didn't do much training between IMCdA and MOO and it turned out not too bad. However, I do plan on getting back into a better training grove for this quick turn around.

Hope all is well, stay healthy and train safe.

Does anyone know if that stretch of road around special needs on the bike course has been repaved?

Hope everyone's weekend was safe and full of training!

I did my final race before Florida. Hutchinson island half distance and I am happy to say it went well despite rough seas and heat, wow was it hot....in the 90's.

Most importantly my plantar fascitiis appears to be "sleeping" at this time so I'm thrilled considering I had it in both feet for a year...Wooot woooot.

We are almost there :-)

Hoping everyone has a great week,

Alicia

I might be out. In addition to injury issues I have not met my fund raising minimum for Childrens tumor foundation and I can't afford to give them another $2900.  Esp for a potential DNF.

Hi everyone. How you doing?  My knee and hip suck.  its s tightrope I am walking of trying to do anything marginally resembling run training (I pretty much can't run at all and try to limp sometimes) vs totally off my body.  I am opting to try to get to the start pain free than just things off more.  I can swim and do some biking.  Sigh.
