I love Iowa City, we spend seven Saturdays there every fall!

I'm not from Des Moines, I grew up in California. We moved here after I got out of Active Duty a little over 10 years ago. My wife is originally from the Cedar Falls area which is one of the reason we ended up in Iowa.

Today is the first 30 min TT I've done this year. However, one of the events I'm training for is the Pigman Long Course in August so I'm sure I'll be doing this time/distance about every six weeks or so.

Update on the shoulder thing--bursitis.

So I won't be swimming today :(  If I chill out and RICE now, I can get back in the water sooner. Since I don'thave pain with it, my down time should be minimal.

This isn't me, but this is a picture that is representative of my shoulder lump.  Now y'all know if you get a lump in the front of your shoulder, could be bursitis.

Great to hear it is something not more serious.  Hope that you heal up quick and can get back at it.

I got my pace much more under control on the second set (came in between 1:40-1:45). I see more of these sets in my very near future.

That's great!  Better pace control goes a long way to having better workouts and also being able to control effort properly in a race.

Yes, nice job Mikey.  I've found just a couple seconds on hundreds pacing can mean the difference between comfortable repeats and not being able to make the send-off, but it is just recently that I've been able to really feel my paces.  It has made all the difference in the world for sticking to a set.

Thanks! I knew that 1:30 was way too fast and that I couldn't keep that up too long, but I was surprised at the difference between 1:40 and 1:45. I'll most likely be working on pacing for my next few workouts.

I did 3 workouts today.

I had an early morning (5:30am) spin class. I was an hour class but I hopped out at 45 minutes, jooged down the hall and did 2 miles on the indoor track. My legs were screaming but I wanted to start practicing T2 bike to run. It took a mile for my legs to feel normal.

Tonight I did my longest nonstop swim.

warm up:
1 x 100 swim
1 x 50 pull

Main:
1 x 1000

I wanted to do 600 more yards but I was tired and it was late.

I was scrolling through the previous posts trying to get ideas for swim sets and came upon a notation that I need some help figuring out:

500 SKIPS

I assume that it means 500 yds (or meters) broken down like this

100 swim
100 kick
100 I (??)
100 pull
100 swim

Am I close? What does the 'I' stand for?

Thanks.

The 'I' stands for IM, but for my Masters class we do just something non-free.  I do backstroke.  The rest is correct.

Thanks. Do you rest at all between 100s or just move right into the next one?

2450 this morning. Alternating some short, faster 25's with some easier swimming. Basically repeating 4 x 25 faster, 50 ez/mod. Stroke length (and speed) had been slipping some as I hadn't been grabbing hold as well. Stroke rate had gone up, but not enough to compensate and don't think it was in a good way for longer term development. Getting ahold again, but will see how things go later. Still kind of tight from earlier in the week.

I dunno...maybe a couple of seconds but mostly it's straight through, and it's pretty easy though I might start to build a little the final 100 free depending on what's left of the warm up (if anything).

Got it, thanks for the help. It sounds like a pretty good warm up set. I think I'll try to work some of these in to change up my w/u's.

Have you played with a tempo trainer?

It's not a big deal in warm-up. Quite often I don't do more than 100 straight even though it may say 500. Just keep the rests short, so that you do actually warm-up by the end.

I haven't. This particular issue is more with range of motion becoming limited due to fatigue. Sunday night had some very high intensity stuff at masters and then did the IM on Monday which tends to add to that.

3000m swim this morning:

WU: 350 @ low aerobic intensity
6 x 50 drills, RI=0:10
MS: 6 x 200 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:10
8 x 100 @ moderate aerobic intensity, RI=0:05
CD: 350 @ low aerobic intensity

Lots of aerobic base.  Came in around 1:30/100m for the 100s and 1:33/100m for the 200's.

And for masters in the evening was a number of 100's with earlier ones doing mixed skill and pacing work into some steady, quicker swimming. Rest. And then a couple rounds of exactly the same thing I did that morning 4 x 25 fast plus 50 easy, though she put larger send-off times. Can be a bit freaky how much the one coach and I can think alike at times.

n +1 this morning:

Masters - 2250 SCM
700 WU (300 free, 300 pull, 100 back)
4 x 50 push pace on 1:10
150 IM kick/drill/swim - this was a mess
10 x 75 (50 catch-up/25 swim fast) on 2:00 - had tough time with this one
3 x 100 on 2:00
150 CD

This was a bit ugly from the get go...I didn't have much this morning.  This has been a tough week training-wise overall so that's probably why.  I have a recovery week next week so hopefully I won't be cooked again by Friday.
