ACK!  So many races, so little time!

Is Flyihng Pig a half ironman or a half marathon?

Sorry, mis-typed.  it's a HM.  And I'll be doing that over the sprint.  Already have it in the works to get a group of people together for that.

If you haven't figured it out, we talk a lot. :-)  Fasten your seatbelts!  Also, we tend to be an inspiring bunch (as in, we use the "inspire" feature of the site a lot).  If you are not familiar with inspires, note that you can reply to them by clicking Reply.  This pops out a new window for you to type your response so that the original poster can see it. Please try acknowledge inspires, at least occasionally!  They can really help us to get to know each other.

Most of us use the training log on the site (It's required: "Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory.").  This makes it a lot easier for us to help each other when training questions come up.   Here's a few shorts article on training logs:  http://running.competitor.com/2013/12/training/why-you-should-keep-... http://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/10-reasons-to-keep-a-train... If you're not going to log or blog or whatever here on BT, please put a link to your training log in your BT Dashboard.

If you list your upcoming races and events on your training log  -- by adding to My Races or listing them in Dashboard.

We have a Bike Gallery as well.  Post a picture of your racing steed and draw Chris' attention to it.  He'll get you added.

We have a Strava group.  Let Chris or Janyne know and we can add you.

We also have a TrainerRoad group that Darren manages for us.  (Darren has said that he will be joining us but I have not seen him around this thread yet.)

Oh, we're on Twitter too.  Janyne manages a Twitter list -- Order of the Racing Manatee

Please be active!  Inactive Manatees make us sad!

Thanks for posting these links, I had no idea there was a bike gallery, twitter site, etc.

And I missed the pet gallery.  I'll  update and repost in about a week if we get a few new members.

I am currently finishing the last mint that was in a bag that my mom bought me at least 7.5 years ago (she passed away in July 2010), I found it as I was cleaning out a desk drawer at work.  It formerly was a 'puffy' mint but completely lacks those qualities now.  I don't care, I'm eating it anyway and thankfully so far didn't break a tooth!  Yup, I'm a bit of a sentimental sap.

Hockey practice tonight and maybe a little snow.

OMG! As was mentioned earlier, they are predicting snow for the Raleigh area -- "as much as 6 inches." I stopped by the store today to pick up a few things (not storm related) and the place was cleared out!  The lines were a zillion people long.  It's not even supposed to start snowing for more that 24-hours!

Complain about people not being prepared, complain about too many getting prepared, sheesh!

I guess snow turns us all into a bunch of monkeys!
To be fair, this was taken in Raleigh with 2 inches of snow

Are you saying that this weekend may be three times worse?  So schools will be out for like, a week?

Edited to correct math.  We are expected to get 5-7 inches of snow.  Unless they are wrong.  Again.

So, are you doing Flying Pig or the sprint tri?  I ran flying pig in 2015 and had a blast.

Doing the Flying Pig half.  Want to come on up?  Should have a pretty good-sized group doing it.

That is exactly the reason we are NOT going to Raleigh today. We were headed for the governor's inauguration festivities. I will take Christmas down and ride the trainer instead. The combination of Southerners not knowing how to drive in snow, Yankees who think they know everything about driving in snow, road clearing that just doesn't happen (why spend money when it doesn't happen that often) and the black ice that always happens before snow all added together, make driving in snow in the south just plain stoopid. I had to drive in it all across the state for years when it was awful. Where I live now, I don't even go out to run or walk when it ices/snows. Cars sliding into you on the road is a real possibility (we have no sidewalks).

Hope you find some nanners!

Driving in snow is one thing.  Driving in ice is something else.  Driving around people who think that having an SUV makes you a good driver...

Also, most of the inauguration stuff was cancelled/postponed.

We are expecting bad black ice from this because it's going to be so cold (Northern peeps, feel free to skip ahead).  It's expected to be -1F/-18C on Monday morning (totally unheard of here) but back to 60F/15C for a high on Wednesday.

It is one I'd do again, but I'm on running lock down for the foreseeable future, so I am restraining myself from signing up for anything else!

Janyne..... talk to me about Lake Logan half. How was it?

Well, I've done the Oly there twice and the HIM there twice and I'm heading back for my third HIM this August.  So yes, it's good.

The good

  • beautiful venue
  • pristine, wetsuit legal swim in spring fed lake
  • well organized
  • short run to T1
  • beautiful bike course
  • well supported
  • relatively flat two lap run
  • post race food

The bad

  • elevation gain on bike (HIM only, Oly is actually pretty darn flat for WNC).  I got 3100 feet on the bike course at Lake Logan and 5500 at IM Choo.
  • one really bad hill on bike (changing valleys) (again, HIM only),  When I say really bad I mean 10+% for a bit there.  You really need to drive the course so that you know which hairpin turn to get in your tiniest gear for this one.  The grade isn't that steep the whole way up but for a bit there, well, I wanted my mommy!
  • remote location.  I mention this because it seems to come as a surprise to some.  There is pretty much one way in from hotels.  Most hotels are 20-30 minutes away or more (but you can rent a cabin on site).

I feel like the run isn't too bad.  You go on up a slight incline of maybe 1-2% for three-ish miles and come back down the hill, loop around transition, go back up and back down and the second time you loop to the finish on the far side of transition.

The swim starts near the boat house on the right.  You go out in the lake and the come back past the dock and go under a bridge (photo taken from bridge - NC215)

You get out of the water at this dock. This part is very cold!

How does one become a member of the twitter group?  I'm titrating my twitter dosage down at the moment, but am still on...  work pretty much requires me to be to an extent.

Thx

You tell me your twitter name and I add you.  Then you are on the twitter list and you can follow the list.

Apologies, currently accessing on phone so am finding it a bit difficult.

When I clicked on the link it took me to my Trainer Road log in page. Once logged in, it then took me to the Manatee team page.

I then closed that page down and tried the link again, where it took me to my user account home page. I then had to click teams tab to access the group. Not really helpful if you're not part of the group.

Here is a direct link to the page:

https://www.trainerroad.com/teams/2477-manatees-of-mayhem

but that may act the same way as the previous link.

It's a bit difficult to work out what's going on when I'm part of the group :/

You could try searching for "manatees" or "manatees of mayhem".

I will join the group again, am busy at the moment pushing through the post Christmas break rush and getting stock back out to the shops. Will calm down in a bit. Will post Bio next week when I am off. Have a bit of time available when Hannah is in hospital for her operation.

Speak soon.

That link worked. I'm in. Thanks Darren.

But I haven't seen the panic buying. The saving grace is that there's a big outdoor ethic, so pretty much everyone who's physically capable of it has proper equipment for walking/snowshoeing/ skiing, and it becomes something of a community "leave your car at home" day. We got 4-6 inches on Wednesday (varied with elevation). I had to do some last-minute banking and shopping (walked there) and must have seen hundreds of people out on foot, snowshoe, sleds, and skis, as well as several cars abandoned on the steep hills leading to our house by drivers who were overly optimistic about road conditions or their ability to handle them. Did manage to get to the airport Thursday AM and now back in Tokyo waiting for the last leg of my "World's Longest Commute" back to Saigon.

Oh my goodness! WALKING to do errands!

Kevin laughs at the people who go to the coffee shop that he frequents and wait in a long drive through line.  He parks, walks in, gets his coffee, and is on his way before they even ordered.  We are becoming a society like in Wall E

Up until about a year ago, we lived in Baltimore City and I walked to do most of my errands.  Our grocery store was a ten minute walk away, the drugstore five minutes, several pubs within five minutes. Other than the rats, crime, obscene property taxes, and lack of parking, it was awesome!

Back issues aside, I can definitely tell the different in me from not having all those extra calories burned during my normal lifestyle.

What's with the wacky weather?!

Today I ran in short and a short sleeved shirt.  This weekend I will need to wear All The Things.

Tell me about it. This morning was the first time I've worn a shirt on a run since last Friday. I'm not sure I have enough clothes for what they're predicting here Sunday morning.
It's not going to be that cold!
28!!!!!!!! #texascold

The harder you run, the more heat you'll produce!

Sunday is LSD day

This almost got away.

More seriously though, that is cold enough to where you do want to pay attention to things. 40's can be funny as usually so long as you're moving you'll be ok, but that can change quite a bit just a little lower. You going to be ok with it? 30' of 28F just around my neighborhood isn't anything to worry about, but think your long runs are at least several hours now. Quite a bit different.

I'm mainly just joking. But when I run with my wife on her long runs in chilly weather I do have to wear a lot more than I normally would as it's more like a walking pace for me now. She's only running 8 Sunday with her marathon a week out at that point, and then I'll tack on another 7 solo but will speed up for those so not worried about temp.

I am a bit confused as to what to wear cycling tomorrow. It's supposed to be 26* at the start of our ride and just about above freezing by the time we're done. Sunny & N wind at about 10 mph.

I'm guessing the additions I'll want to make will be some hand warmers over the toes of my shoes under the neoprene shoe covers, face mask, and some hand warmers in my gloves.

I'll have on a cycling beanie, thick long fingered cycling gloves, long sleeve thermal top, bibs, short sleeve jersey, arm warmers, leg warmers, tightish pants & a cycling vest.

Thoughts?

I think I may do the Oly. I will probably never be able to do that bike course. I was thinking of it in lieu of the M2M if I have to bail because of my stoopid nieces wedding. Since I seem to be draw to the number 2, I may look into B2B now that it is a 70.3. I used to hike in that area back in the day. It really is pretty. And a long way to anywhere.

FWIW, I'm told that overall, the M2M bike is more difficult.

ETA: It was a testosterone laden individual who said this to me in Chattanooga so who knows.  I think that they both have similar terrain.

Janyne..... talk to me about Lake Logan half.

This is on my probably will do list as practice for Louisville.  Of course, as mentioned above, I'm not signing up for anything until I can run (and bike) again!!

Now I am afraid!

INFO FOR NEW AND RETURNING MANATEES

When Janyne and I were going back and forth about opening the group for this year, Social Media was added as part of the bio. As she mentioned, it is a way to learn more about one another and communicate with one another. OK, really we just stalk!  All kidding aside, it is a useful tool and one that can be fun. My use of them has been to follow people and companies that I am interested in, post regularly on some and infrequently on others, and read many things in many forms from many people. And here is today's find, for those that like free stuff and Strava and running:

https://www.strava.com/clubs/orangemud

https://www.instagram.com/orangemud/

There is a contest on Strava to win gear from Orange Mud. It is simple enough, just join the Strava group. And no, I am not an ambassador or in any way associated with Orange Mud other than owning the HydraQuiver One.

Thanks for posting these links, I had no idea there was a bike gallery, twitter site, etc.

I just added Karen's bike to the bike album. Send me pix of yours and I'm happy to add them as well. PS, we need more gravel grinders!
