Just had my best swim of the year! I am so excited. I started swimming back last June and have come so far! Super stoked! This could not have come at a better time. Someone told me it would all fall into place and it is finally coming together! ya!

On another note... will most of you take off on Friday or Saturday before the race. For my marathons I have always taken the day off before the race and it has worked, however I'm thinking I want to take Friday off and try a short (very short) work out on Saturday this time.

Dude!!! where did you get those,  they freakin rock.  Do they come in Green?

Ever since Nike quit making the Free 7.0 I have been using custom shoes ordered through their iD program. You can pretty much customize every aspect of the shoe, including colors. Here is a green pair that I put together:

Dream Crushers

Too much?

The greens almost match my kit.  I'll have to look into them sometime.  I didn't know they did customer shoes.  That rocks,  how long did it take to get them?

JMoney - 2012-07-05 10:31 AM Pack attempt #37  I have managed to pack everything into one 15.5 X 13.5 Basic Drawstring Sack Pack.  This was all accomplished after studying origami,  I have been able to fold all my race gear a into swan or a crane (working on a full size working Tri bike).

LOL ~ Awesome!

Huh? Piggy back rides for second loop? Can I hop on? Tell ya what ~ u gimme a piggy back ride on the second loop and we can stop 2x on River Rd. at my friends house for a nice cold beer   Beats the flat coke, right?

Anyway, I don't think anyone mentioned the Athlete tracker yet.  I am ordering one and they are pretty easy to use for everyone who is up there jockstrapping for you.  My husband wore one for IMFL and I knew pretty much exactly when he was going to show up within @ 5 mins.

www.myathletelive.com is their website if anyone is interested.

???

Yes, I ordered mine earlier this week.  I've used it for IMFL & IMLOU, works great!  And, you can get it shipped right to your hotel.

NOW you are talking....

Thanks for the reminder about Athlete Tracker. I used one last year and it worked reasonably well at Lake Placid. It does need a cellular network to operate, so last year it did suffer some dropouts here and there according to the folks I had watching it, but not nearly as bad as the official IronmanLive tracker. Also, the Sherpas that I had last year in LP said that the cellular network in town gets a little overwhelmed on race day. They had no problems placing and receiving calls and texts, but web surfing was sluggish at best, so the MyAthleteLive website was innaccessible to them off and on throughout the day. They were actually getting text updates from folks watching the MyAthleteLive tracker from home. Ah, Technology!

The best thing about MyAthleteLive.com is that it shows all the racers using the service on the same page. All my folks watching from home thought that it showed ALL of the people in the race, and they thought I won the whole thing! Too, too funny...

It is a great service within the limitations of the location - I cannot reccomend it enough.

Definitely thanks for the reminder.  How does the delivery of the unit work?  Do they Overnight FedEx it for you to the location you will be staying?  I'm not sure if someone has to sign for it or what.  I'm signing up either way I just figured someone would know the logistics.

Yep, just sign up to rent the unit for one day (race day) and have it shipped directly to your hotel.  No one has to sign for it.  You have to order it at least 8 (I believe) days prior to the race.

Awesome on the swim ~ excellent timing!!

I have always taken the day before an IM off; however, I MAY do a short run on Saturday this time.  I guess I will decide for sure when I am up there.

Attached are some notes I gathered in the last two weeks; from a LP camp and then two coach lectures to first-timers to IMLP.  These are random thoughts I grabbed while listening - my point is some make sense, some may not.

Perhaps there is a nugget you will find helpful.

(I am hoping there is an attached PDF here)

This might be good for 1st timers but it is also a very good reminder for those that have done it before. Sometimes you forget the little things. Thanks for sharing.

Great Job - with everyone seeming to be in the hole at the moment it is awesome to hear some news of confidence-building workouts. It gives the rest of us hope Laughing

I will swim a bit on Saturday - really more getting in the water and scouting the course: looking at sight lines, landmarks, etc. followed by a ride. I will most likely ride out of town and do the Keene descent, and then get a ride back into town from the bottom. On Saturday I will do the same thing I do before every race no matter the distance, sprint, OLY, HIM, or IM: 30 minute easy bike (out of town and down the run course) and a 10 minute or so easy run. I will do my best to stay off my feet as much as possible on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Hope this crazy heat stays away from Lake Placid! It still looks pretty mild there. There is no way an Ironman could be completed in this 100+ degree weather. Glad I'm not doing Louisville with the way this summer has gone!

It's going to be another really hot ride tomorrow, not even getting below 80 degrees tonight where I live!

Question for all and those familiar with Lake Placid region: What do most of you do the night/two nights before as far as eating? Buy and cook your own food? Do the local grocery stores sell out? If you do eat out, what are some good restaurants with reliable food that will hopefully not cause GI upset :p

Just so you know Placid doesn't get too hot. And if it does it cools off at night... huge swings in temperatures. It is 82 right now there... 95 here in Syracuse about 4 hours away. All this week in Placid it will be in the mid 70's during the day and high 40's at night...

I try and stay away from restaurants a few days before a race... god only knows what they put in the food. I went to a restaurant the night before a OLY last year and they LOADED the dish with garlic... talk about GI issues. I felt bad for the people running behind me. I may have even ran through one or two of my own clouds on the out and back...

My normal pre race meal is not too lavishing... eggs, olive oil and rice. So I will probably bring it with me. Then again I am going up Wednesday so I may go to the store... who knows.

I almost passed out after my swim this morning.  I think I'm going to take my 'old' sleeved wetsuit and make it into a sleeveless.  Way to freaking hot.

I was going to just go out and do a little BRICK, and the wife walked in with an exploded pool thermometer.  Apparently it exploded from the heat.  So, yeah, maybe I'll train later.  My iPhone says it's 84 degrees out but it feels more like 94.

I am presently moping around the office whining about a sore shoulder which I'm thinking (taking DC's advice of when in doubt, leave it out) will sideline me from my swim tonite.  I'm a wee bit concerned because I've been slacking on my swimming the last few weeks as a result of the shingles and not wanting to expose anybody at the pool.

Question:  Prior to my diagnosis, I swam the full iron distance 2x.   In light of "only" swimming 3000 yards +/- twice a week for the last four weeks, should I be concerned?  Though the shoulder soreness is by no means debilitating, should I suck it up and bang out some yardage??  Any thoughts/insights would be appreciated!

I believe in the two week taper and we are not quite there yet. One more weekend of mileage for me. That being said, is your shoulder sore from overuse, fatigue, or do you think you're bordering on injury? If the latter, I would continue with your 3000 yds and get the shoulder out of the injury zone. If you are just fatigued, but between the ears you believe you need to get one more higher yardage swim done in order to be "right with it", then go for it.

Without having to go back and read through too many pages- has anyone been on the LP roads recently? I'm wondering how the repairs have gone after the damage done from the flooding. Nothing that I can do about it, but I'm just curious...

At this point, I would rest and stretch it, nothing to be gained by pushing a swim and really hurting yourself at this point.  I use the swim as a complete warmup for the day and there is no reason to sweat it, 2x 3000 is plenty for IMLP swim imo.

The roads are pretty good overall. All the damage has been repaired. Unfortunately they left some hills from Wilmington back into Placid. I hear the DOT will eventually move them by 2013.

I was lucky enough to get to San Diego for work and got to run in 68 degree! What a difference from my last run in 100+ in Va, so for everyone training in the heat the 70"s in LP will feel so good. For the first time IM doers, now is a good time to make lists of what goes in each transition bag, in then do a walk through to make sure you don't forget anything. Last year I forgot a small towel in my bike bag to dry my feet, and I Also forgot my sunscreen. You can get access to bags race morning, but better to get it right beforehand. Ex:bike bag shoes (socks), helmet, sunglasses, small towel, sunscreen, bottle of ensure (drink while changing), nutrition for jersey pockets, etc. Best to have this planned out ahead because, trust me, when you get to LP with everything going on, it's easy to forget an item. Last year someone forgot their helmet and was lucky enough to borrow one from a volunteer, except their T1 was like 45 minutes! Good luck out there and stay safe, Jim
