This race is going to take me about 3.5 hours give or take. I will eat what I usually eat before the swim and know I need to take nutrition on the bike but not sure what to take. Will some Gatorade and Chomps be enough? When I race I usually stop drinking on the bike about half way through (for a sprint) so I'm not really sloshy on the run so I'm thinking I'll stop drinking with about 5 miles left on the bike? I'm not used to running 6.2 after getting off the bike, any suggestions for what to eat on the run? That should be plenty... what I have learned - is that it is better to take in less then more nutrition on the bike. You can make on far less than you really think (biggest mistake WE, (I), et. al. make in regards to nutrtion and longer events is taking on too much, which results in GI issues) Chomps, GU, water & Gatorade you should have enough calories to sustain ya. For example... my Olympic plan is bagel, PB & honey in the AM, sips of Gatorade before race start. Water & Gatorade on the bike with a GU towards the end of the bike or at the start of the run (by the first aid/water stop - take the GU/gel with water) and that's it. I think that's my plan as well. Difference is my Oly will be an hour or so longer than yours ![]() The good news is the temps won't be high so that should help with hydration. I expect to be taking a PB&J out on the boat with me since I'll be on it for a while before getting in the water. And I might have some chomps on the bike and then a gu at the beginning of the run and maybe an orange wedge on route. |

Extreme Veteran 689![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!I think nutrition is sort of a personal thing. One thing may work for you but maybe not for someone else. For example i can't eat anything solid during any kind of exercise or I get cramps, I mainly stick to water with nuun before the race, on the bike infinite, water and one gel towards the end of the bike and what ever they have on the run course. For a sprint I only take water and nuun on the bike and maybe a gel. Whatever you decide, you probably want to try it out before your race.. Longer is not always a measure for caloric burn - you need to find that sweet spot between intensity & length of time. You should be fine. Stan - yes the nutrition plan is relatively unique to each individual. (liquids only, solids, gels, etc... which ever works for that racer.) But the absorption rate and taking on too many calories seems to be the most misconcieved plan when it comes to consuming calories/carbs during a race. I have made this mistake TWICE (1x70.3 & 1x140.6)... I am pretty sure I have learned my lesson. And Stan states it best... train with it - then race with it! You would not go into battle with a weapon you have never fired. Edited by Trin2bfast 2010-03-31 12:33 PM |

I was really excited about it and now mom calls tells me they aren't getting me the bike we had looked at or any other bike anytime soon because they have to find me a "nice used bike". I'm so frustrated. I have no idea where they think they are going to find a bike in good condition for like $100. They know that right now I don't have the money to get a bike and pay for the triathlon and wetsuit rental and any other stuff I need by myself. She also tells me that I have to train more because I haven't trained enough and I'm not gonna be ready in May. I'm so sick and tired of dealing with this. It was the same when I rode horses. I had to fight constantly to get to do shows and get any riding stuff I needed because they were too scared I was going to get hurt. I'm 20 years old and feel like my parents are treating me like I'm still 5 and they can control every aspect of my life. I've worked my butt off to get in shape for this triathlon and now my parents do this. I'm so hurt that they don't even recognize how much hard work I've done for this. |

I've worked my butt off to get in shape for this triathlon and now my parents do this. I'm so hurt that they don't even recognize how much hard work I've done for this. But, as some food for thought, I did my first triathlon on a borrowed hybrid bike with nubby wheels from my next door neighbor... who also happened to be 6'2" and a boy (I'm 5'6"). Granted, I looked like a dork, but I didn't know any better and had a superfun first race. Any chance at borrowing a bike from a friend for the race, or potentially renting one from a local bike shop? Also, for starter bikes, check out sites like ebay and craigslist. I have a girls hybrid that I got back when I lived in St. Louis for around $150 that is pretty much brand new. It's not a perfect custom fit or anything like that, but at the time I just used it occasionally for commuting and it worked great. Chin up, there's still some time to figure out options. As far as the parents go, I'm not much help there. I was legally emancipated at 17 and the best advice I can give you is that they only have as much power and control over you as you allow them to. Then again, I wouldn't wish the way that I did it or the relationship I have with my family on my worst enemy, so again, I'm not a great person to give advice. |

Mine get more challenging over time, not easier. You can do this if you want to. You just rocked your first 10k. There is no reason you can't be ready for a sprint tri in May. For most people, their first tri goal is to finish with a smile. You have the base to do that for sure. I cannot imagine that somewhere on that Clemson campus there isn't a bike you can borrow. There will be mtn bikes, hybrids, and huffy's at almost every sprint. And some of them will be passing some expensive roadies. Don't let this get you down. I keep a spare bike just so I can loan it to friends. Really short friends. There are other folks out there like me. Maybe you can sucker them into doing it with you with their good bike. And you can do it on any bike. See if you can find a $50 hybrid or something on Craig's list. That's what I sold mine for and it was an excellent bike and needed no maintenance. kcarroll - 2010-03-31 11:15 AM Chin up, girlfriend. Like Justin said, parents are parents. Trin2bfast - 2010-03-31 1:59 PM Take a deep breath... we all have set backs and you can overcome this. Let the frustration subside, cause that will do you no good. I am sorry that it is seems like it is not coming together and the issues with your parents (well - we all have those - even at FORTY!) Have you checked into renting a bike? at least for this first tri? I am sorry, but I can't remember if you are without a bike altogether? If so, maybe you can borrow one from a friend. Even a mountain bike will suffice, just so you can Ssow your parents that you are trained, you WANT to do this and let the results sway them to support your needs for the sport you love. Try and stay positive! Don't give up! Keep moving towards your goal and you may be pleasantly surprised as to what options become available. Emmanem - 2010-03-31 12:43 PM Absolutely crushed right now. Had decided to do the triathlon in May and was going to register today. |

For my first race, I was on a borrowed bike that was too big for me and ended up getting a flat but still had a great time bzgl40 - 2010-03-31 1:32 PM I have nothing better to add then what has already been said.
