Not much I can add to the great advice that's already been given   I know it seems like a huge road block at the moment, but it doesn't have to be, don't let it get you down.  You can find some pretty great deals on Craigslist, keep checking.  And, if you can borrow a bike from a friend or someone in your family, that's a great option.

In the famous words of the Fresh Prince "parents just don't understand".

Keep training and keep your chin up!

evondo - 2010-03-31 2:42 PM Like everyone said don't let it get you down.  I have a few friends that we've lent bikes to for their first race. For my first race, I was on a borrowed bike that was too big for me and ended up getting a flat but still had a great time

bzgl40 - 2010-03-31 1:32 PM I have nothing better to add then what has already been said.  Keep positive and see if you can borrow a bike.  I keep a spare bike just so I can loan it to friends.  Really short friends.  There are other folks out there like me.  Maybe you can sucker them into doing it with you with their good bike.  And you can do it on any bike.  See if you can find a $50 hybrid or something on Craig's list.  That's what I sold mine for and it was an excellent bike and needed no maintenance.

kcarroll - 2010-03-31 11:15 AM Chin up, girlfriend.  Like Justin said, parents are parents.  Mine get more challenging over time, not easier.  You can do this if you want to.  You just rocked your first 10k.  There is no reason you can't be ready for a sprint tri in May.  For most people, their first tri goal is to finish with a smile. You have the base to do that for sure.  I cannot imagine that somewhere on that Clemson campus there isn't a bike you can borrow.  There will be mtn bikes, hybrids, and huffy's at almost every sprint. And some of them will be passing some expensive roadies.

Don't let this get you down.

Trin2bfast - 2010-03-31 1:59 PM Take a deep breath... we all have set backs and you can overcome this.  Let the frustration subside, cause that will do you no good.  I am sorry that it is seems like it is not coming together and the issues with your parents (well - we all have those - even at FORTY!)

Have you checked into renting a bike?  at least for this first tri?  I am sorry, but I can't remember if you are without a bike altogether?  If so, maybe you can borrow one from a friend.  Even a mountain bike will suffice, just so you can Ssow your parents that you are trained, you WANT to do this and let the results sway them to support your needs for the sport you love.

Try and stay positive! Don't give up! Keep moving towards your goal and you may be pleasantly surprised as to what options become available.

Emmanem - 2010-03-31 12:43 PM Absolutely crushed right now.  Had decided to do the triathlon in May and was going to register today.  I was really excited about it and now mom calls tells me they aren't getting me the bike we had looked at or any other bike anytime soon because they have to find me a "nice used bike".  I'm so frustrated.  I have no idea where they think they are going to find a bike in good condition for like $100.  They know that right now I don't have the money to get a bike and pay for the triathlon and wetsuit rental and any other stuff I need by myself.  She also tells me that I have to train more because I haven't trained enough and I'm not gonna be ready in May.  I'm so sick and tired of dealing with this.  It was the same when I rode horses.  I had to fight constantly to get to do shows and get any riding stuff I needed because they were too scared I was going to get hurt.  I'm 20 years old and feel like my parents are treating me like I'm still 5 and they can control every aspect of my life.  I've worked my butt off to get in shape for this triathlon and now my parents do this.  I'm so hurt that they don't even recognize how much hard work I've done for this.

Short of an hour to hour & a half ride on tap for tonight, here's my numbers for the month.  Biking and swimming has increased somewhat since February.  With the half-mary just over 3 weeks out, running was the main focus of the month and it's been solid.  Running-wise I feel stronger and faster than I've ever been.

March's totals:

Bike:

9h 57m 16s  - 147.1 Mi

Run:

16h 08m 52s  - 106.07 Mi

Swim:

2h 55m  - 7800 Yd

February's totals:

Bike:

6h 51m  - 90.5 Mi

Run:

15h 17m 26s  - 97.19 Mi

Swim:

1h 40m  - 4550 Yd

Goals for April...keep running as I have been and crush the half-mary.  Bike and swim need to ramp up in a big way.  Especially on the bike!!  Start adding long rides back into the schedule.

My March training is over and done with as well... Bike suffered cause I wanted to focus on running to get my fitness to a point where I can run in Hawaii and not be tired/sore since it'll be my only source of fitness for a while. Swim, pretty pathetic and I have an OWS race this weekend with only 3 swim workouts in 3 weeks under my belt will be interesting!

March's totals:
Bike:91 Mi
Run:91.05 Mi
Swim:13650 Yd

February's totals:
Bike:253 Mi
Run:63.48 Mi
Swim:16700 Yd

Next month is going to be just get in what I can when I can and try not to gain too much weight. Goal for next month is to get married and enjoy Hawaii, sorry no tri-related goals for me in April May is when the switch will be flipped for training!

Strength:1h 55m
Cross-Country Skiing:2h 00m
Tennis:4h 00m

Can somebody reassure me that I'm not going to fail utterly in my HIM in early June?  Work is easing up and my training will increase drastically for the next eight weeks (I can start back with 2-a-days next week), but on the other hand, I'm a 45-49 grouper.  On the other hand, I'm down to 175lbs. from a holiday beer high of 186.  On the other hand, I have a nagging calf pain--kind of like a charlie horse that won't go away. Doesn't hurt to bike, ski, or play tennis, but it hurts after about 4 or 5 miles of running.  On yet another hand (fifth hand?), I'm only trying to finish this one (my first), and want to compete in my September one.

Have any of you entered a HIM so poorly prepared?

Still lacking some time on the bike, so it's time to buckle down these next 3 weeks and get some major hours in...long rides needed!

I'm ok with the run numbers but was hoping to be a little closer to 70 miles, which would have equaled my best month.

I'm good with where I am in the swim, so no complaints there. In fact, my swim total for this year is almost equal to all of last year...very happy about that.

April is going to be intense. A couple of side jobs on the schedule and of course the biggie on 4/25. I'm hoping to have quality workouts all around and enjoy a nice taper leading up to the big day.

March's totals:

Bike:13h 02m 24s  - 175.58 Mi
Run:12h 00m 14s  - 61.46 Mi
Swim:7h 58m 06s  - 26550 Yd

x2.  You killed on that 10k, and you should proudly point that out to your parents.

I have a buddy who's a professor there at Clemson.  I'm sure he has a road bike you could borrow.  He owes me for saving him from the cops in Vegas last time we were there.

Hahahaha  Thanks for the picture... needed a good laugh!  Well my day went from stressful to insane so i can't decide whether to get on the stationary bike tonight or not.  Half of me wants to so I can work out some stress the other half wants to just go back and watch modern family (great show for those who dont watch it) and relax. I'm going to try to work out a bike some way.  There's talk of a bike rental on campus unfortunately not in time for the triathlon.

Thanks so much everyone for the encouragement and kind words.  It really means a lot to me!

trying1 - 2010-03-31 4:52 PM X 5ish  As long as  you're not on this, you should be ok..

KelliD - 2010-03-31 2:55 PM Not much I can add to the great advice that's already been given   I know it seems like a huge road block at the moment, but it doesn't have to be, don't let it get you down.

I've been pumping out my basement for 2 days straight. Does hauling water and debris count for training?

Here's a shot of Rt.95 the main highway between Providence, RI and Boston MA.

If I see locusts I'll know the end is near!!!

Oh man, didn't realize you lived out there.  We do services for RI state and we had to shut down and evacuate the data center and turn up operations in the DR site.  One of the employees got injured during the evacuation as she fell in a sink hole.  Hope things calm down soon.

It's unreal how horrible it is. A neighborhood about a mile downstream from me had to evacuate because the dam is about to burst. I feel fortunate to only have a wet basement.

Ironically, on Monday night I called the state disater center to volunteer to lug sandbags on Tuesday. I never made it because the rivers rose quicker than anyone anticipated.

That sucks - keep pumping!

Does this make the swim sessions more likely?  I swim better in shallow water.  Paint a line down the middle of your basement floor.

March's totals:
Bike:7h 31m 37s  - 136.47 Mi
Run:13h 03m 09s  - 87.66 Mi
Swim:7h 30m

February's totals:
Bike:12h 08m 27s  - 226.95 Mi
Run:6h 37m 08s  - 45.83 Mi
Swim4h 05m

I am pretty happy with the run volume.  I wish I had more progress to show for the time in the water but some progress will have to do.  I still have time to figure out how to swim.  Bike was a little weak - I am sure I will fix that in April.
