loeber - 2010-04-01 3:06 PM I just finished packing the truck for the weekend, running gear included bear spray. Opening day of spring bear season is today in B.C. Last thing I want to run into out on the logging roads is an angry bear.

HAPPY EASTER!
Enjoy your families and stay safe.

Holy crap! I get if you are that close to a bear you better have spray or a gun!  I can't say that I have ever been in a location without a fence between a bear and I.  Good luck!

Go to Glacier National Park.  You'll find plenty (and it is a totally cool park).  My parents actually hit one before on the highway.(back home in NB, Canada)  Everyone is use to deer and moose but I think it is the first I have heard of someone hitting a bear.

Loved reading everyone stories!!  I'm sure I speak for the others who haven't done their first tri when I say it's really inspiring to read other people's stories.

Somehow I don't think any sort of spray would make me feel safe against a bear!

Have fun this weekend!

Any recommendations on when you should buy a new wetsuit?  Right now I'm 5 lbs bellow the recommended weight range.  The suit still feels snug but haven't swam in it since the last race.

My first race was a Du. 2/15/2. I bought a bike about 1 week after I decided I wanted to do Tris. I had practiced transitions and the flying mount because I thought everyone did it. So I set my shoes up and walked my bike over to T1 and I didnt see any others with their shoes clipped in. I thought I was breaking a rule and actually asked someone. Bet they laughed later. So my goal was to run how ever hard I felt was ok. I was estimating I would do 9:45-10:00/miles. The first mile I felt pretty good and was just hanging with the group. I glanced at my garmin and I did it in 7:30. Way too fast for my fitness. I strolled into T1 with my HR of 199. I was so tired I just threw on my helmet and ran to the bike mount. I was passing people who were in bike shoes. I should have because I forgot to take off my running shoes. I just kicked them off at the line. I remember at the last 1/2 mi i was giving 100% and got passed by a 13 yo kid. Bad thing was he started 4 min after I did. totally loved it.

Oh yeah and my favorite comment from the wife that day.
In a Joking mannor I ask "Where are all the big guys, why is everyone so skinny"
The wife piped up pretty quick and said "Because THEY are runners honey!"

Todd, I remember when you told us all that you were doing a flying mount/dismount and I was completely impressed.  I fall over when clipping in/unclipping under normal circumstances, so that just made you even more of a stud.

Happy Friday everyone.  I hope you all have a great weekend and if you celebrate it, a very happy Easter.

My first race was Mother's Day 2009.  I had joined a running group for the first time and during one of our sessions one of the ladies mentioned Tri Girl.  I went online that day and looked it up.  I sent Ken the link asking him what he thought and he said "I'll meet you at the finish line".
I signed up for the race in March.  Towards the end of March I swam my first 25 yards and it was truly miserable. I grabbed the other side gasping for air and on the verge of tears. I really didn't know I couldn't swim.  I was in the pool 3-4 times a week and was lucky enough to get some tips by a swim coach one day.  I ordered my bike in April and only got to ride it a few times before the race and one of those times I took a trip over the handle bars.
We went out to look at the lake the week before my race, it was so windy it had white caps and I thought I was going to throw up!

On race day I was a nervous wreck, I sidestroked 1/2 the swim, lost my water bottle on the ride, spent too much time in transition both times and absolutely loved it!  The thing about a women's only tri is the whole time volunteers are telling you how beautiful and amazing you are.  I remember rounding the corner to the finish and I could see my whole family there.  The girls had made posters for me and Brendan ran along with me on the other side of the orange fence.  Ken wanted to congratulate me but he was trying to fight back tears.

Here is my race report:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=158474  Oh and you will all notice at almost 3/100 I was easily the slowest in the water!

My plan was to do the 2 Tri Girls May and August but as soon as I got home I got on the computer to find out when the next race was.  I did 5 last year!  I've met some GREAT people and have to say that is what keeps me going, the accountability is great and everyone is so encouraging and supportive.

Hope everyone has a great long weekend in store.

I'm taking advantage and having a "training getaway" today and tomorrow. Going to get the first OWS in the books this afternoon and then head to the race site for the evening so we can ride the course and run a bit tomorrow morning. Really looking forward to it! Sunday will be an off day, so I will enjoy it by having some ribs and whatever else my mom cooks up for us. I'm sure I'll devour anything after a big day Saturday. Laughing

Have a great weekend everyone...hope there's a good amout of training and rest on the agendas!

Justine and I had a GREAT swim last night!!!  It was very windy when we got there and the water was a bit choppy for the first lap and I was a bit whiney.  It was misty/raining he second and THIRD laps, they were awesome, though I was a bit tuckered near the end of the 3rd.  We swam the outer banks where we can reach the vegetation most of the time.  It was the longest swim ever for both of us!

When we got back after the third lap Nicki and Tiff were there, it was great to see them again, it's been a while.

Anybody racing this weekend?  I do believe our fearless leader is racing in the water today.... eager to hear how that goes.

Nontri related question:  Anyone else watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution??  I've been watching it and I think it's great.  It's extremely eye opening as to what's going on with food and especially how its affecting kids. I started watching it because it relates to my honors research paper which quite possibly may be the topic of my thesis for next year, but it's a great show.  I highly recommend it.

I have been watching the show.  It is amazing how much resistance he is getting.  Since when did eating healthy become a bad thing?  I hope he succeeds in changing some views and some lives.

Way to go Eric!!!

I have watched some of Jamie Oliver's show.  With 2 kids in public school this was no surprise to me.
Years ago when Brendan was in 2nd grade I asked him if he wanted to buy school lunch and he told me it was nothing but empty carbs and sugar!  Smart kid.  I packed my boys lunch until they started packing their own.  I am surprised more parents/families don't brown bag it.  The school has vending machines but my kids don't take money to school so it's a non issue.  I like them to have a buck or two on them but they don't like to waste their money on junk.
Brendan is a freshman and has purchased a deli sandwich when he didn't have time to pack a lunch but that is a rare exception.  They don't even have lunch accounts at the school.

After working at a day care for 2 summers, all I can say is that you are definitely the kind of parent I would love!!  It just scared me when we had kids who came in every single morning with breakfast from mcdonalds or sonic!  Not that the food we served them was all that much better... That being said only 3 or 4 kids actually brought lunch with them every day and it was so much better for them than the chicken nuggets or whatever we prepared for them.  So nice job raising kids who know what's good for them to eat and what's not!

Has anyone ever had shin splints before?  How did you treat it?  How long until it felt better & you were running again?

Ugh in the same boat as you right now.  I've been icing them at least twice a day and after every run.  Took 2 weeks off before my 10k and didn't feel any pain in them at all.  But I did a short run yesterday and they hurt.  It's extremely annoying and a pain (literally) to deal with.  What I've done is ice and rest and when I start back I do short runs just to test it out.  But I haven't been able to make them go away for very long.  still looking for a way to get rid of them for good.

Great swim for me this morning.  My tri in May has a 750m swim so I decided to try 750m straight to see how it felt.  It was a "use any combination of strokes you can to complete it" and I managed to complete it in 22:12!  Very proud of that!
