Probably a little too late to get one, but what brand of speed suit do people where? Aquasphere seem to be the cheapest if I were to make a last minute purchase... If I had the money, I'd probably get blue seventy. Is it reasonable to do the full swim in in tri shorts and a top without a speed suit?? Yes, I think so. I wore tri shorts/top for the swim at LOU last year, no problems. |

I would post here and on the other site. There are more than likely people who cannot race that made reservations and cannot cancel them. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread mdfahy - 2012-07-11 8:46 AM godekjames - 2012-07-11 5:51 AM For my no wetsuit races, I wear a TYR Torque speed suit. Not that it makes me faster, but my tri top w it's pockets would slow me down, so I use speed suit over tri top and shorts for a smoother swim. I don't think LP will be a no wetsuit swim, the question will be if they do like last year where you have 2 timing mats, one for no wetsuit KQ and AG types and one for wetsuits and no chance to AG or KQ and we all started at the same time or go like IMTX and have wetsuits start 10 minutes after no wetsuits. If they did that I would have a tough decision, don't think wetsuit saves me 10 minutes, but it saves energy that I will need later in the day. Unfortunatly WTC will not tell us anything until last minute, so just have a plan A and plan B and let the chips fall, it will not make that big a difference in the long run anyway. I did IMKY for my first IM and not wetsuits was not that big a deal, Did that 10 minute delay get added to your total time then if you start in the wetsuit wave? That would likely make me join the non-wetsuit wave. YEA! I have been waiting for the water temp/wetsuit discussion!!! if they went with a wave start The wetsuit official start time would be 7:10am; the delay does not get added to your overall time. The race still ends at midnight though, so you would have 10 less minutes to finish the race (16:50 vs. 17 hours). I was one of those folks that elected to go wetsuitless last year and got pummeled. I would still do it again given the same conditions and and mass start though. I would probably just seed myself a little differently though. For my preferences in a long race the water was too warm for wetsuits last year. I think we all pay a lot more than we realize by getting too warm on these long swims. I am betting on a wetsuit-legal swim this year, but it will be interesting to see what folks decide to do if it is not. Last year there were only about 3% of racers that elected to go wetsuitless. If they went to a wave start I would bet there would be a good bit more than that that elect to go wetsuitless. While I don't have any hard-and-fast rules this is the way I seem to shake out relative to swim attire for HIM and longer races: Full sleeve wetsuit up to 68ish degrees. 69-74 degrees, sleeveless. Above 74 degrees, Desoto Speedtube (basically just wetsuit "pants"). Non-wetsuit legal: TYR Torque Pro over 2 piece tri kit. For non-wetsuit legal races under the HIM distance, I am probably wearing a one piece tri suit and no speed suit. And Geez that all sounds complicate as I read through it... I do love swimming with my full-sleeve wetsuit - it is like swimming with paddles. |

New user 25 Westmont | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Monty - 2012-07-11 10:45 AM godekjames - 2012-07-11 10:57 AM I have TYR, last year at LP when KQ could not wear wetsuits, there was a run on the B-70"s at the expo, cheaper to get online prior to going there and at least a chance to try out before race. I can't say it makes me any faster, just to go over tri top and reduce drag. The complaint from last year was that the wetsuit wearers, clobbered the non wetsuit wearers because of the extra buoyancy the wetsuits provide. That is the rub...not wearing a wetsuit when the majority are in a mass start is a significant disadvantage. First as you mention, when you get that washing machine going on the first leg it is more comforting to be in a wetsuit no doubt. When you get hit or accidentally swallow a mouthful of water your panic factor is less in a wetsuit. Secondly you are swimming with a different level of swimmer than you are used to. That goes for all levels of swimmers not just the fasties. You will be with a group of swimmers who in a pool would be around 10 s per 100m slower. Just a whole different vibe. I am realistically not a Kona candidate so I will be wearing one unless it is prohibited. Just my 2 cents!
I'm with Monty. Unless you're aiming for KQ spot a wetsuit either sleeveless or full will save you a considerable amount of time and energy. Unless a biblical heatwave strikes the race will be either wetsuit legal or optional. Even at 77F you shouldn't overheat in a wetsuit unless your really hitting the gas on the swim in which case you're probable aiming for a Kona spot and wouldn't be wearing a suit if it was above the limit. I'll be wearing my full regardless as the bouyance make the swim soooo much easier than without. Would you rather swim with a pullbouy and small paddles or nothing? I'll take the equipment which is a bit of stretch as the sleeves do help on the catch but nothing like a set of paddles. Good Luck to everyone! |

Check them out they have a website. Schultes family lodge I think it wad called. RobF - 2012-07-11 12:55 PM Day late and a few dollars short... playmobil31, I'd be interested in how you think the LP bike and run compare to MT T's course, I plan on doing that race next year and would love to hear your opinion. Oh, you will be fine for IMLP with the training you have done. Just remember to stay conservative (small chain ring) on the first bike loop and stay hydrated and all will be well. Jim |

I'll let you know how it compares but as far as today, I loved Mt Tremblant and if I didn't said to my wife that there's gonna be no full IM next year, IM Mt Tremblant would have been on my 100% to do list for 2013. Loved, loved, loved it

Veteran 361 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread godekjames - 2012-07-11 4:38 PM I'm gonna jump in cause I was there too. Mt tremblants bike course is brand new. I remember seeing a crack in the road if any just .5% of the course. The hills are nicely scattered and the part where It's suppose to be bought in lake superior is nothing compared to the climb in Wilmington from the ausable fork. I found to have a lot of false climb in highway 117 and the only tough climb in the course is in 117 which is probably 2k long. The run course has about 10-12k of gravel something road I cannot describe but It's not asphalt. And I found it easy on my feet. Two or three major climbs in the run course but nothing significant. playmobil31 - 2012-07-11 2:42 PM OK, I know it is the taper but now, I begin to be scared... Thanks everyone for the insights!!! I guess I'll be wearing my shorty (sleeveless, tri short length) wetsuit since it sounds like it is going to be wetsuit legal. It does add a bit of protection but since I'll be somewhat to the front (53:33 for full distance trial swim), I'll have a bit more clear water than most once out of the mass start craziness. I will be sure to look for BT tattoos as you all cruise by me on the bike. I'll be on the steel Jamis hugging the very far right side of the road trying to stay out of everyone's way. |

Extreme Veteran 567 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I have a question (I must be slowing down or something). Is there an aid station within the transition tent/area? I'm working on my calculations for my nutrition on the bike portion, and trying to work out the numbers and I have noticed that during my training I've usually eaten some form of solid food (non Gel or drink) before I actually start my ride, which I've never really factored into my nutrition before. So I want to make sure I duplicate that and it would be nice to know if there was something that I could pick up within the transition area (Bonk Breaker or something), If not I'll just have to throw something into my Bike bag. Though I'm not sure how much I'll want to eat depending on how much water I swallow in the swim. |

Wow that is a tough one, Is there not someone you can call to see if you can get a status on it. Maybe even get something in writing stating what happened. I was thinking about doing one of the races next year in Canada, but I have been worried about these kind of logistics. |

We lived there for a number of years and loved it. The only reason we left was for a job relocation and we hope to find ourselves back at some point. Now, this problem cannot be so unique as to not have a solution... I am sure you have thought of this already, but are you flying or driving? If driving, did your wife opt for the Enhanced Drivers License the last time she renewed? If she does not already have one, what is the timeframe of getting one? Can that be expedited? |
