I very nearly ate it BADLY! Had to carry my bike a little over a mile back to the house (barefoot) as the wheel was completely destroyed (wouldn't spin at all even with brakes released)... thank goodness it happened early on. From what I can tell, a small piece of the rim came out, caught on a brake pad... instantly locked my wheel and ripped my rim apart causing a LOUD sidewall blowout and several spokes to break loose. Able to come to a FAST skidding stop and unclip without incident. After assessing the damage (hey, now I can buy new wheels, and there doesn't appear to be derailler damage which I was worried about), I rode a buck forty-five on the stationary watching the tour... 1:45 on the stationary sucks no matter what's on TV. If that had happened up front I'm quite sure I would have done a major endo! Dang other Josh, that totally blows.. sorry to hear it ruined your rear wheel. However, I'm no longer bikeless. Veteran 261 | Subject: RE: Barloworld Team Thread I know that most of what I'm seeing is just good natured trash talking, but I really hope that some of you are taking the time to remember when YOU were total newbies. For example, my first time riding a bike as an adult was only 6 months ago. Since then, I have continually increased my pace and distance, and am learning more daily about how to be more efficient on a bike. Heck, until 2 months ago I didn't even know what cadence really was. That being said, in next year's challenge I'll care about my miles versus yours, etc and so on. Josh |

I just simply don't have the time to ride 500 miles in a week. This is my first tri and I'm not going to give up my life for it quite yet. That's a bit ridiculous. I know it's supposed to be in good fun, but I DO get an elitist vibe around this place from a lot of people. I've been riding some sort of bike since I was a kid, but I only adopted the road bike a few months ago and you have to be honest, that it is VERY different. And it's hard. And it's challenging to do 40 miles in a few hours if you've never ridden like that before. Like any sport, we ALL start out as beginners, and I think a lot of people forget this. I've noticed this a lot with some of the cyclists I know. So maybe, next year I'll be a total a$$hole, but for now, I'm pretty danged proud of what I have accomplished so far. |

That's what this crazy sport is all about, NOT boasting about who's got more miles on the saddle or what the PR's are in any of the splits. Yes, I want to impove on the various disciplines of this sport but what I really want to do is push MYSELF to new limits because ultimately the clock ticking is a race against MY times. The other people in the race serve as an incentive to "keep up with" or "can I take them?" as well as a surce of encouragement telling me to keep going when I want to quit. I know this is a challenge thread, but words of encouragement go a whole lot farther than insults/put downs. What this TEAM did was encourage each other to keep going in the face of a lot of obstacles. J |

I must say regarding smack talk that without a doubt we started it, so I think it is only fair that we are getting it back and that they are going for the jugular. It's not elitist... they'd be encouraging us if I hadn't poo-ed in their pool and flicked them all off on page one. TriAya - can you confirm for me that I need one more ride to meet my goal. Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Barloworld Team Thread did a brick this morning, haven't done one in a while. wasn't pretty, my back hurt going into the run and I cut it short with walking breaks mixed in. my daughter went out with me to OW swim practice. She wore out after about 150-200 yards so I swam her back to shore and went back out. Basically went to get used to getting in/out of the wetsuit (anticipate COLD water in Ithaca next weekend) Can anyone say future triathlete with me? |
