Not sure if this has been covered already but how are the winds on the bike?  I've heard conflicting reports; some say it is terribly windy, others say it isn't.  I've looked at the race results over the past few years and for a flat course the bike leg times seem slower than typical.  So I'm guessing the bike is pretty brutal?

Last year it was extremely windy with headwinds gusting up to 20 mph for it seemed 70 miles or so.  Not to mention it was cold with light rain for the majority of the ride.  I will say that the course is pretty flat and the tailwind for the last quarter of the course made for some fast speeds with little effort which was perfect for the run.

Bummer...was hoping for a bike PR.  Although I'd rather have head winds the first half rather than the last half.

If the wind holds off, I think you'll have a great ride.  Good luck!!

The direction of the bike course has been reversed this year. That may mean tailwinds our for majority of the ride, with head/cross winds on the last 30-40 miles in. Depends on the weather. If I remember correctly, in the past warm air temps have meant southerly winds; cold--northerly winds.

Thanks for the info!  I can't decide if the change in direction will help me or not.  It's always nice to be able to pick up the pace at the end and not be to gassed for the run.

The headwinds were pretty relentless for the first 70 miles of the bike the last two years, followed by blessed tailwind the last 40mi down 421. As the pavement was in really good shape most of that last stretch, it felt like you were flying effortlessly. Given a choice, I would def prefer the less brutal part come at the end before I have to start running but it's 112 no matter what, so prob doesn't matter. I do agree with the cold/northerly-warm/southerly prediction.

B2B's first year had virtually no wind at all and stayed cool-ish all day long; let's do that again.

Last few meaningful training days coming up and then I'll start working on prep details..Man, I'm looking forward to race day!

Just curious if anyone attended the "Athlete kick off dinner" in prior years and if it was good?

Also appears it will be "in conjunction" with the last athlete meeting (5pm). So you could eat dinner and listen to the briefing at the same time if I understand correctly?

Hope everyone is enjoying the taper. Smile

It certainly wasn't very good in 2008.  We'll be skipping it this year.

We're down to less than 2 weeks.

Has anyone else started checking weather.com obsessively?

Yep.  Started checking the 10 day forecast a few days ago.

Farmer's Almanac:  16th-19th. Drying out after a week of damp weather.
20th-23rd. Scattered showers, then clearing and unseasonable cold, with an early frost for some localities.

I thought the dinner was well worth it last year, though it was on Thursday, not Friday.  The food was actually pretty good and you can't beat the price!  Not sure I would have gone if it was the day before the race though...

Best of luck!

Does anyone know what time the busses are leaving from the Hilton for T1?

The email sent out Friday states 5:00am.  Meanwhile, there are two other times listed in the athlete guide in two different places, 5:15 and 5:30.

And FWIW, I am not looking at that Farmer's Almanac report above lol!  Frost!!!!

Dunno about the busses but weather.com has it being pretty warm in the 10-day (takes us to Thursday)- a high of 79.

This would not be ideal for me...Nice for the bike. Not great for the run for us halfers...but good for the full people if you straggle into the night.

I'll gladly take the high of 80 versus the alternative to the projected winds of 5mph that day!!!

Does anyone know if there is a carpet/sidewalk/???? for the distance between where you exit the swim and T1?

Or, does anyone know the surface we will be crossing after the swim? concrete? gravel? grass?

Unless things have changed, it is a short run on a dock-like thing, then about 100-200 yards on a mix of sidewalk/concrete and road. T1 is all grass/dirt. You DO feel like a rockstar on that bit though because there are tons of people lining the street cheering. Very fun (at least I thought so).

This will be my first full distance race.  Very much ready to get up there and just get started.  Looking forward to it for sure! Starting to get a little nervous but sooooo ready to get it going!

As far as weather, weatherchannel.com is showing a high of 70 for the race with a low of 54 Friday night.  Sounds like perfect racing weather to me!  Wish it said no winds versus the 8mph they are calling for but still, sounds good to me!

I'm in the half, but I'll ask this question here since my time on the course will be closer to the time on course of a full participant.

I was thinking of renting one of those myathlete tracker devices for my family, who will all be staying at Carolina Beach for a week. They want to be at the finish, but not stand around all day either. I can safely give them a 2 hour window. I'd prefer more specific updates.

Is the tracking system that B2B uses fast and reliable? Or should I pony up the cash for the rental unit?

no carpet, just cold cement and asphalt.  After the swim and its cold out it will hurt even more. Stage a pair of extra shoes at the swim exit. You'll thank yourself later for it.
