Okay. How did you guys build up your endurance in the water? I know by going and doing it and blah blah blah...is the key. I get the whole practice makes perfect.

How do some of you folks make this look so easy and effortless? I feel like I need to rest after every 250 yards or so. Resting in the middle of a lake during a race isn't really an option.

When I get tired should I stop and rest or just keep trucking but switch to breast stroke for 50 yards or so to recover and then go back to freestyle?

Team Standings - as of Sun Feb 10th:

Rank Team# of Participants Percentage completed
1 Team Swimming Rocks
33 33.44%
2 Running with Scissors
19 31.65%
3 Gingerbread Joggers
16 30.39%
4 Team We  T.I.T.S.
30 29.11%
5 LEMmings - the reRUN. Over the cliff again.
18 28.92%
6 Pitter Patter of Fast Feet aka PFFT 18 19.41%

Congratulations to Team Swimming Rocks! They are the current leaders in the Feb Challenge!

I've noticed that some of the lower ranking teams have members who haven't reported in. In other words - the majority of the team is DOING FINE! But there are one or two people who have ZEROS recorded, which really brings the team total down!

Remember, your training needs to be reported on your BT Training log and on the spreadsheet! Team captains - please help your team members log their training correctly.

February is now 28% completed. So there's still plenty of time for you to SWIM, BIKE and RUN!

- Dee

Alrighty, then, now that that's out of my system (incidentally, we so totally rock is in honor of Finding Nemo... lucky fins and all... you kinda had to be here from the beginning of the thread).

I was without internet access from yesterday afternoon until this morning.  Fortunately, I did not begin to twitch or break out in hives, but I wish I had a dollar for everytime I actually checked to see if it had been restored yet.

With that said, there may have been a few folks whose totals were not updated on the spreadsheet.  Apologies if that is the case but I think most of us have been able to access it and log accordingly and the totals will, of course, count for next week if I missed anyone on my list.

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...

From your logs it looks like you do mostly continuous swims with an occasional day where you are doing mostly drills, is that right?  You might want to try doing more interval type workouts.  Even though you'll be resting every 50, 100, 200 etc, you'll be pushing harder during the repeats and that will help improve your swim fitness.

You can make up your own workouts, like 10 x100 w/ 0:15 rest, do a ladder of 400,300,200,100, etc.  There is also a website that will generate workouts for you based on your ability/goals: www.swimplan.com.   I've found the book Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes to be invaluable.  When I started with it last year I couldn't complete even the shortest workout, so I kind of adapted them to my ability, but now I can do any of them.

Also, if you can sneak in another day of swimming, that will help too, even if it's only 20 min.

Keep up the good work!

Great job everyone. Any totals not recorded for todays results will be counted towards next week, for it will be a running (ha ha) total for the month.

Okay, Team Swimming Rocks took first place this week, let's keep it. SWIM SWIM SWIM!

Spent today at a Family Festival and the internet connection was paid for and lost and unable to reconnect. Going to be trying to get a refund for it.

SWIMMING ROCKS! February - going to win!
My team was a winner in the January Challenge!" - Flying Fish!
Avenging Angels! December - won!
Twisnibbins! November - won!
Rotten Apple! October - won!

Actually, the Flying Fish won last month too. The team was over 100%, which meant they were a winner. Therefore, you can add "won!" to your signature for January.

Um, and I think we were the POISON Apples.

You may be Rotten. But I'm not. LOL!

Okay team. Would you all be okay if I, as your team captain, took on a goal of walking for the month since I can't get in the pool? This would allow me to participate (even though I would not be swimming). I thought I would try to get 10 miles in, which I know does not sound like much (but if you could hear me wheezing).

P.S. Your "challenger organizer" has already OK'd this. Kendra would just be a fish out of water.

Oh wait - you're swimming rocks this month.... So she'd be a rock out of water.

LOL

Right now I'm switching to breast stroke to catch up a little and then switch back. I hope I can stop this soon but seem to be stuck at about the same level as you right now.

Switching to breast stroke is definitely an option.  It will help you as you work towards building up your endurance... just don't get too dependent on it, try to go further before switching over, even if it's just a few more strokes.  However, instead of switching to breast stroke, I like to switch to drills... including kicksets with a kick board or sculling.  Both of these are "oxygen-rich" drills (your head remains above water) .  This helps improve your form and keeps you in the water.

As a side note, it is perfectly OK to switch to breast stroke in a race... and as for "resting in the middle of a lake", well... actually... it is legal to "rest" on a buoy if you absolutely have to (or if you have a panic moment).  Before I did my first tri, I had it in my head that I had to swim the entire distance freestyle and I was stuck on that despite being ready for a sprint distance swim... I felt like I needed a Plan B in case my swimming somehow failed me.  It was kind of freeing for me to realize that I could doggie paddle if I had to and that my only job was to keep swimming forward.

As a head note, you can swim crawl, freestyle, breastroke, backstroke or butterfly if you wish too. Their are no limits to what you do in the water, just no waterskiing. Has to be self propelled method without.

Nice work, Rocks!

3000 more yards in this morning.  Did a drill workout for pretty much the first time.  It seemed to go buy much, much faster than my normal 'get in the pool and start doing laps' workouts.  Kinda dug it.

I agree.  Drills make the workout go by a lot quicker.

Okay , tri people....what would you do if your pool was CLOSED ALL WEEK as mine now is? Concentrate on upper body strength and do more bikes? More runs? HELP ME - I AM PANICKING!

This is obviously NOT going to help the team.  I'M SORRY! I will swim extra when it opens, I swear.  But in the mean time, how would you train if this happened to you?

Well, my pool wasn't closed, but when I was completely neglecting my swim (why I needed this challenge in a bad way) I did a lot of biking on the trainer.  Maybe some general fitness cardio type stuff?  Like a cybex or elliptical?  Not real sure.

First of all, great job on all your training last week, and Hooyaaa!! we are in first place right now. I just updatted the sheet this morning, and since I really need to push myself, I've upgraded from 60000 to 75000 for this month "if that is OK with our moderator and everyone else". I need to really concentrate on my swimming, and need to drop my time down to 1:10's or so for the IM in Nov.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL FOR AN OUTSTANDING JOB!!

Now, to the dark side. Lets try to inspire the following people in bringing up their scores as the rest of us reach 100%, we will slow down in upping for everyone else. SO let's INSPIRE the following, and really encourage them to achive a great week of Happy Training!!

The following are bellow 34% and need to really be pushed and inspired this week! 34% was yesterday's goals, so we should be by 38% at the end of today.

     kns57,  atlrunnergirl, colesdad, gracetheterp, kpb421, LeCrac, madkat, milaminute, runnerg1rl7, ShawbC13, stilltri-ing, wurkit_gurl, jacsuza

My appology's if I was quiete over the weekend, as I tried to concentrate on lots of training, and resting between. Extremly good weekend.
