Today was a big day for me and my 2008 racing schedule. I decided to defer my entry for the Olympic Distance Tri in Philly until 2009 and do the Sprint Distance the day before instead. I also signed up for the Marine Corp Marathon... yay!!

For the Oly deferral decision.. I think I'm too far behind where I need to be in the swim and bike portions. I'm not one to stress over sports or competition so it's a new experience for me to be nervous about something like that. The thought of the Oly was making me nervous because I don't think I am properly trained yet and I don't think I'll get there in two months.

The sprint tri.. no bad feelings about it and I'm looking forward to it.

wow, MCM!  cool!  you and GomesBolt can hang out together

As for the Oly, yeah, if you're not comfy, then don't do it!  You don't want to turn yourself off the sport.  If your'e looking for a later one, I'm doing the NJ State Tri, in central jersey (pretty close to philly), and it's run by the same company AND it's really really flat for the bike.  it's 7/27.  And then I think CGI also has a race in the maryland area, not sure when, but that's nice and close to you.

Aikidoman - as for core, I don't really take the time out to do it, but I bet working it in sometimes would help, especially in the swim.  I use my core a lot in swim.  I can feel it getting stronger just from s/b/r too.  Runner's world says the most elite runners (as in olympians) do a rigorous core regimen, but i think that's to set them apart from other elites - i doubt it's vital at our level

Smart move, you shouldn't feel bad about that at all.  I had to defer twice from the NYC marathon (I got in via the lottery two or three years ago now, I can't even remember). I even had to cancel/change my flights out there at the last minute. I was really depressed over the whole deal but I knew it was the smart thing to do at the time. Basically I did something really stupid in my training, I ran a full mary in place of a 20mile training run and came away with big knee problems. I just didn't see myself limping through an entire marathon so I had to defer the NYC race.

Bummer. I was looking forward to you doing the race. Do you feel better now after having made the deferrel? If so, it was the right decision .

Congrats on getting into MCM!!!

Alright Traci!!! Welcome aboard! I've got a bunch of people going up right now (well 5). Maybe we can convince some of the other people on here to run it.

It's not for another 6 months... and DC is actually pretty nice that time of year (as opposed to the summer and winter which kinda suck).

Lisa, come-on, you should do it!!!

REGISTRATION STARTED TODAY AND IS EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT 13-DAYS. Get on it!

www.marinemarathon.com

If you decide to defer to 2009, you can still enter the 2008 10K the day before up-to a week before the race.

Yup!  I definitely feel better  I've never gone into any sort of competition with those feelings of self doubt and I never want to.  Seeing that I can't straight swim the Olympic Distance yet is another problem, but I look forward to working up to it at my pace and not because I have a race looming ahead.

It's really nice to know that others have decided to do the same thing at some point with their race schedules.  I felt kind of bummed that I have been  Swim / Bike / Run training since November and I still don't feel ready for a race I signed up for.

On the core stuff, I try to get 2x 30min workouts a week on the core because I think it helps during the run. It keeps your body stable during the run or something. I did a lot of core during Wrestling and Golf.

There was actually a good article in Runner's World back in February I think that had a bunch of ab workouts and the benefits of strong core.

As for the Oly, It seems to me you can't just jump-into an Oly like you can a sprint. My last Mentor (Brian Pilgrim) said he figured the training for an Oly was greater than that required for a Marathon.

Now go kick-butt on the Sprint and tell us all about it!!

That seems to be a common issue.  I have to admit, I feel bad for lot of people.  I have been SO lucky.  Got swimming lessons as a wee one and kept on going.  I was doing mile swims in boy scouts when I was 12 years old.  I guess I'm just a fish of sorts.  A very SLOW fish, but a fish none the less.  I have been blessed with not having swim fears or issues.  I still needed to get into shape, but none of the fears that get a lot of people.  A lot of swimming is just feeling comfortable in the water, as much as just walking around....

Personally for me the marathon training was a lot harder than the oly tri training.

ooooooo!  I love packet pickup!  That means the time is near!  SO exciting....

Some are better than others - music, vendors, freebees.  I love going home and looking through the swag bag at all the stuff.  Give my wife the girlie things and granola bars, and I get the rest!

Ha, can I quote myself? I was just thinking that I said this because I have such a hard time staying healthy while marathon training, I'm always fighting running injuries and it throws off my training. From a volume standpoint though, the Oly could easily be a higher volume of training and could be a harder commitment for sure.

Ha! you just did!  The EDIT works ok too.  But I just quote myself sometimes, it's just easier.  Plus it pads your post count!  heh heh....

I agree with you on the marathon.  It would be MUCH harder for me.  The olympic distances for s/b/r are just not that long so much more managable for me.  Anything over 13 miles of running, and my body REALLY feels it for several days.....

So I got a BIG workout day tomorrow.  90 minutes of running and 90 minutes of biking.  Looks like I'm going to have to get to the gym at 4:45 to get one of them in (too long for lunch and I don't feel like a big brick)....  Sucks.  So what's easier?  A run or bike?  Suggestions?

I'm thinking the bike for some reason.  I don't have to be as coordinated at that hour!

I don't understand what you're asking. Don't brick them. Are you asking which to do in the AM and which to do in the PM? What is the workout for each? All endurance pace stuff?

Depends on how you look at it. The time commitment is certainly greater for an Oly (more days/week, double sessions); but some might consider those marathon training long runs to be a lot tougher than any long brick or run you might do during Oly training. And, it depends on how you train for Oly; there are definitely international-distance specialists putting in the same amount of hours as long-course triathletes; there are definitely age-group triathletes getting ready for an Oly with only a handful of training hours each week.

Yeah, just kind of joking around.  Nothing too serious.  Both are basically Z2 and Z3 and 90 min long.   Since I don't do the early morning thing, I was wondering what people feel more comfortable doing still groggy from the early rise!  I will probably do the bike in the moring per the plan on the trainer.

You're right, no way I want to brick them.  Not an option IMO.

I WANT to get up, but I seriously don't know if it will happen.  My determination goes bye-bye in the wee hours of the morning.  Since Friday is a very light swim day, I may move one to then.

Traci, I'm so glad you are comfortable with your decision to defer the race!  I did the same thing last year with a HIM.  My life was turning upside down in the months leading up to the race.  I just didn't have the mental capacity to train properly.

I was seriously considering changing my half marathon plans on Sunday to a 10K.  After today's run, I'm going to stick with the half marathon.  I'm not going to push it, though.  It is purely a training run with 500 of my closest friends! I hope the slow ones get out of my way!

okay, I just got a crazy email this morning, here is the first paragraph:

Dear Athlete, Congratulations! You are being contacted because you have earned a spot on Team USA for the 2008 Short Course Triathlon World Championships after your name was selected from the 2008 lottery. The 2008 World Championships are set to take place June 7-8 in Vancouver, Canada. etc. etc.

??? I didn't enter the lottery for this, but I did participate in a qualifier last year (and came in MOP). Did they automatically put my name in a lottery? Is this something I shouldn't pass up? This is so last minute, please help! Seriously I don't think I can spend all the $$ to get to Vancouver.

Now, I'm quoting someone who quoted someone who quoted me!!!

That's exactly what Brian said about the difference between the Oly and the Marathon and I think I agree with the estimate. I can train multisport for 2 hours, but if I ran for 2 hours right now, I'd probably die.

Boston, have you practiced your transitions yet? I lost about 10 minutes overall in my first tri on transitions. I just kept doing too much in the TA.

Last thing. Gruesome story about a toe, details in my Training Log, but the gist is this, I really chewed-up the top of my little toe and it bled pretty fiercely during my run this AM. But doesn't hurt any worse than a blister. What do you think I should do? Let it heal to where it's not bleeding when I run? Superglue? Is there some Runner/Tri-fix for this kind of thing?

Wow, that's pretty cool. I am guessing you were automatically entered by participating in the qualifier. It's a big decision. I think racing in that atmosphere would be really cool and a lot of fun. But, you also need to consider how it fits into your race schedule, finances, etc. You also need to decide what type of performance you'd be willing to accept from yourself in the race.

Let us know what you decide. This is pretty cool !
