On another note David is "missing" (missing from my perspective).  I don't think he made the Rockman tri either, unless he was part of a relay.  His name is not listed among the competitors.

On the NOAA website, once you get to your City/St you should see a link for past weather reports or 3 day history.  Either one should get you that info.

Thanks.  My race started at an unaclimated heat index of 84 and ended at 89.  Plus no shade.  Honestly it felt a lot hotter than that.  In anther two weeks that heat won't feel so bad.

Well guys, I just couldn't stay away. I have been just lurking and you have been getting in some pretty serious racing in the last week or so. Congrats to everyone who braved the hot weather and to everyone who had issues but kept on going.

What did you all do with David while I was gone???? Can't leave you boys alone for a few days and you runoff our Mentor. Seriously though has anyone heard from him?? I couldn't find his results on the tri site either. I hope is knees are not still acting up. Well off to get something done for the day. Everyone be careful out in the heat today.

Total speculation, and maybe I should just wait for David to get back, but I just looked at the Rockman Half Iron results again and saw that Christiana Glenn, David's friend, finished 2nd among women.  I am thinking David started the race but his nagging engeries forced him to withdraw in spite of his optimism for tackling a top notch event so soon after knee trouble.  That could put him back in Granville packed in ice again.

On yet another note.  On Sunday's race I tried out the method of leaving my shoes clipped to the bike, then pedaling with my feet on top and working into the shoes while riding.  Then I got my feet out of the shoes the same way at the end and jumped off the bike while still moving and went immediately into a descent run into T2.

It worked out fairly well and I had practiced it about 6 times on Saturday.

hey guys, thanks for the thoughts and sorry i have been off so long.

I just got back late last night (around 11) from rockman.

had some very ups and downs this weekend.

My race went nothing like i had planned. swim went well enough although rough untill the last 500m or so, when i swolloed WAY too much water for a few strokes. thought nothing of it after i stopped coughing, but after a quick transition i i had made it almost a quarter of a mile before i threw up the first time. this continued throughout the race. i took in around 800 calories on the bike and kept down maybe 100 of them. there was an insane thunder storm with ind gusts in the 35-45mph range that rolled through near the end of the bike and made things interesting. the run started well, i ran the first 5 miles at around 7:30 pace and was feeling good although very drained. by mile 6 i was dead, and my body was waaay below empty. i dropped out at mile 8 and caught a ride back. not my day at all.

christiana did get 2nd overall and brought home a nice paycheck.

overall i am very glad i went, we stayed with the race director and a few of the pros that were racing so it was a great weekend.

i am going ot be off racing for a few weeks/month now to let my body recover and then get in some serious training mileage for the later season races.

i should be fine as long as my knee holds up.

the nutrition/stomach thing is a risk you take with long course racing. in short stuff you can get away with it because it is really not a factor, you are trying to go fast, not put in enough fuel to go long.

i guess i should learn to keep my mouth shut in the swim.....

near the end of the bike i saw my watts drop off very quickly and my cadence dropped a ton, i knew i was in trouble there but was close to the end of the bike. the scary part was my legs never really hurt which is what makes me feel ok about this knowing it was a total stomach/nutirtion issue and not a pacing/fitness one.

i'm looking forward to getting some high volume weeks in after i rest a bit.

David, glad to know that you are OK. I have read some other RR's and it was a tough race. I know it is hard enough with out swallowing all that water. Ugh, you are so good for being able to HTFU and continue as far as you did. And have the wisdom and smarts about your self to know when enough is enough. Now you can get some down time and get healed up for the later part of the season. What is on your schedule later this year?? or do you still have to wait and see how your healing??

Take care

You know this tri stuff is kind of crazy. I always thought a marathon was kind of crazy since you prepare for a 26 mile race, you know if you can do that without injury you still contend with weather that is out of your control and your own body that in many respects is out of your control (nausea, hydration, glycogen-bathroom breaks). You take to this tri thing, especially the 1/2 to iron man distance and you say...crap that is crazy how much must go right if I were to ever get it "every thing" right. What are the odds? Dave, you have an ambitious season ahead of you and we are here chearing you every bit of the way. Please help us learn as you go through this stuff so that we may perhaps minimize our hard knocks. Glad to hear you are OK and hopefully you can crank one of the HIM in the near future.

I feel that way some of my training days looking forward to my HIM. How will my body react if the race is scortching hot or a windy rainy mess? How many calories per hour should I take on the bike so that I don't need to take in a ton on the run to keep moving? How will my body feel on the run since I have never ran a half mary before? How will I run after cycling 56 miles? What about the course... never rode that before?

Taking the challenge of this race is the largest single physical challenge I have ever put myself through. It is a little daunting thinking about 70.3 miles... but the journey so far has been fun. I still have 60 some days before the race. A lot more miles and a lot more challenges lay ahead... and I am up for that challenge.

I don't know how I will feel when I cross the finish line on August 24... but I do know that I will have accomplished a very big goal of mine and no matter where I place or how fast I finish... That little victory will be sweet.

Another user on BT (JeepFleep, I think) has this in his signature line, thought I'd post it here since it speaks to what you are saying:

"If god invented marathons to keep people from doing anything more stupid, the triathlon must have taken him completely by surprise."

And, David...enjoy some well deserved rest and recovery. That was a tough race based on your description and this one by Blake Becker (http://blakebecker.blogspot.com/)...sounds like those storms were pretty intense! You're the man for pushing through some real difficulties but also for knowing when to save yourself for another day. As Buffett said, some days are magic and some days are tragic...but it's been a good life all the way.

hahaha very true, and blake missed the storms on the bike, he was just too darn fast;-)

the guys up front were off the bike before it hit, which was lucky for them.

but yeah, the harder you push in the longer stuff the more risk you take in blowing up or screwing something up or just having an off day.

on the up side i got to see a lot of friends, meet some great people, and get in a SOLID training day. i am tired still for sure but am recovering well and getting in some pool time (i promise i'll update the log today or tomorrow).

I am talking a bit with a pro a met there about helping with some coaching for the upcoming months and i hope to get back on some serious run/bike mileage soon.

this is all still very much a learning process to me, as well as many/all of you. and unlike some of you i dont have any running/swimming/cycling background to draw from, so while i have good health and age on my side (not that you can really be too old for this sport, which i love), i have a TON to learn about my body and how it reacts to this stuff.

for the small part of the run i was able to complete i ran faster for that distance after biking than i ever have before, off of practicaly no running this season, much of which i contribute to knowing what to expect after the bike and after racing for that amount of time. the first two times around at the half distance i was simply not mentally ready for what was coming.

that being said, at least for the rest of the season i am going to focus on the shorter course racing and get a bit more speed work this season with only one or two longer races this year.

keep the questions coming and happy training to everyone!~

David's three week challenge is over.  I have a hunch that Greg will come in the best, but admit I have not looked closely at all the logs.

Run - Goal: 75 miles, Completed 75.37 miles (100.5%)

Cycle - Goal: 600 minutes, Completed 547.18 minutes (92.9%), 180.59 miles.

Tonight I'll get my last cycling minutes in.  Looks like I came up one day short.

Well... Looking at my plan and how I pulled together my totals I included another week... Oops

Run: 5:53:00 ~86% (ahead of schedule... I've been enjoying the run a lot)
Bike: 10:10:03 ~65% (my long ride on Saturday was not that long... but hard due to hills)
Swim: 1:42:13 ~31% (No Change from last week... I just can't get my butt out of bed and get to the pool... I really need to work on this)

Goals:

Swim - 22,500 yards
Run - 60 miles
Bike 16 hours (~260 miles)

Actual:

Swim - 18,900 yards (84%)
Run - 55.19 miles (92%)
Bike - 188 miles (72%)

Not to make excuses but when I projected my numbers I hadn't decided to do my sprint so the little bit of tapering did effect my totals. I'm sure without that I'd have hit swim and run numbers but the bike would have still fallen short. Oh well..that is still more in three weeks then I did in the whole month of May! And I've done it all injury free which is just as important...

Great job everyone and keep up the good, hard work!

I've been a real slacker over the past couple weeks.  I don't think I'm getting enough sleep and I have a definite lack of energy when it comes to workout time.  Getting back into it though.

On average, what time do you guys go to bed?  What time do you get up?  How much sleep do you get?  For me: 11 PM/5 AM/6 - 6.5 hrs

Goals:

Swim: 5700 m
Bike: 176 miles
Run: 31.2 miles

Actual:

Swim: 5050 m (89%)
Bike: 173 miles (98%) - would've been over but I skipped my ride to run last night
Run: 18.5 miles (59%

Now I am at 11PM-6:30 = 7.5

On some good weekend days I get 8.5.

Ah, sleep...I love to sleep and these darn 4:30 am wake up calls that are required for swimming are killing me. Luckily, my girl trains as much (or more in some cases) then I do so she needs her sleep too. Most nights we're on our way to bed by 9 and actually asleep by 9:30 or 10. So, I guess I get between 6.5 - 7 hours on swim days and then on non-swim days I get about 7.5. Weekends aren't a lot better but I do get an extra hour or so.

And when I can, I take a nice Saturday or Sunday nap. It is a rarity but I'll tell you what, it makes a freakin' world of difference when I can manage it.

Still may ride 34 (group training ride) tonight if it fits in - I will be traveling next week and will likely not get much in less the hotels have good cycles.

This week
Swim 5350 ~ (23050 total/20000 goal) = 115%
Bike 47.8 ~ (201/250) = 81%
Run 37.6 ~ (88.1/150) = 59%

Obviously my eyes were bigger than my belly when making the goals. I think the 3 week goal really helped with motivation, thanks Dave for the idea. Lots of family activities etc make it difficult to get a nice routine/schedule. I am starting to get a little better grasp of my schedule or a routine that will work for my family and me.

Tom, it is hard to come much closer to goal than you did. Great job!

I know what you mean about those swimming wake ups. If I do things right, I get up aat 4:30 nd drive down town and hit the 5:30AM swim group so that I can get to work by 7:00. That first cold splash is a shocker. Unfortunately I have been playing alarm tag in the morning and instead have to find time later. Looks like we keep similar hours. I shoot for bed at 9:00 but it is usually more like 10PM.

Chris, what are the biggest advantages to a silver membership over my rookie membership? This is a pretty phenomenal web service compared to any I have seen in the running world.
