There was a huge breakdown in communication at the office, things were overlooked, plans rejected, fines handed out.... It may even reflect on my record as a professional engineer - THAT makes me unhappy....

There is going to be some serious fall out from this one. I don't think I'm in the gun sights, even though it was my project and the buck stops here, but others did not do there job....

This, added to a chronic lack of attention by these same people, and the slow market, will result in some very bad things....

I'm nervous, and have been for the last 24 hours.....

As in stomache ache nervous....

Can you post about who/what got screwed up and why? It might help calm you.

I'll try to make it short....

A drainage report has to be approved prior to submitting construction plans.

It WAS approved, but the approval letter we received had a condition that structural calculations had to be approved prior to submitting constructions plans.

The people doing the drianage report (who got the letter) did NOT tell me this OR give me a copy of the letter.  I didn't know, so I submitted the plans without it.

The county gets REALLY pissed if you have an incomplete submittal and charges you a 50% increase of review fees, in this case 11,000 dollars.  AND they can report the engineer to the state board for poor performance.

SO, the people that did the drainage report for me did not let me know or file the letter or give a copy to me so I would have known about the condition.  It sucks, because we HAD the calculations available, but I didn't know to send them along....

AND our secretary (who screws around all the time on the net and phone) never knew about the letter or scaned it in the electronic files or put it in the paper files.

HOWEVER, as the P.M. I take some personal blame because I should be backchecking everyone's work for something like this.  I should have insisted I see the letter and make sure everyone knew what had to be done. - but you have to trust people to do their jobs too, no?

We are working with the county to just admit it was a small mistake and have them wave the fee and I will also check to see if they may report me for such a silly oversight.  The oversight commitee is more concerned with bad engineering, not bad clerical skills.  Plus I'm on decent terms with a lot of the people in the industry, and I'm pretty sure they will cut good-ol-Jim a break.

So the real $hit is going to rain down on the people screwing around and not doing their job.  BUT internet use is a big issue, and I am on BT a bit, so I will need to check myself too.

mr2tony - 2008-07-30 1:55 PM I'm bored. Entertain me clowns!
It's about 1:45 this afternoon, and I'm walking out to the parking lot, and I notice a car has a really low rear tire. I notice it's one of the bartenders where we go for lunch. I call and let her know. Later, I'm coming back from the courthouse, and I walk by the same car, and I *think* I hear it running. Get closer, yep, sure enough rinning. Nobody around, nobody inside. I know the girl so I reach in, grab the keys, and walk them up the block to the restaurant. "Hey, you might need these later..." I get the "How did you get my keys?" look. Classic. I tell her she left them in the car. Unlocked. With the enginge running. Since 8:30 am. Classic.

Wow... I'd say she had a few too many bloody mary's before work...

Or she's dumber than a bag of goose guano.

Or both.

You two are missing the important question....

Is she hot?

Is she blonde?

Jim, the missus says you're a machine, but we all know you're just human. As are the other people in the office. Now I know they expect perfection, but my guess is they know humans make mistakes and hopefully all will be forgiven. As I said, let us know what happens. And good luck!!!

And Chrissy, thanks for pointing that out. I have plenty of friends who got married before 30 that are still happily married.

Eh, I guess it just makes me sad that so many people I know and talk to are all so down about marriage, making it seem like it's pointless, or worthless or "what the heck, I'm just gonna end up divorced" - well, with that attitude, of course! I mean, I understand how you could feel that way if it happened to you (and I don't mean "you" specifically, Spokes, the "royal you", but that doesn't mean it's gonna suck for everyone! I mean, I'm not necessarily "too young" and since I'm 27 and a half and still very single, the odds are good that I won't get married much before 30. But at least I know what I want and don't want and know what I will and won't put up with, so HOPEFULLY that means I will have less of a chance of screwing it up.

Spokes - 2008-07-30 11:31 AM Jim - this is one of the reasons we operate with checklists on the stuff we approve. Nothing goes forward unless you can show you did it on the checklist, which includes the appropriate documentation in the package. As a PM, it might be something you can suggest because Net and Phone use is OK, IMHO, as long as people do what they're supposed to do.

Nice idea, and maybe we should start to create some.  This was an unusual instance - that is why it got overlooked by everyone, including me.  Everyone made the assumption that the process was status quo - but not.

Hard to checklist for every possible contingency....

My job is pretty secure to be honest.  I'm the only liscened engineer in our dept.  So I'm absolutley needed PLUS, other than the boss, the only one with significant design experience.

I just get uncomfortable about "thowing stones" when I surf the web probably too much too.  But, to be honest, they take it to an extreme with watching movies and tv while at work, shopping, and other stuff.  I'm pretty easy going, and it even disturbs me.  However, when they work on MY stuff, they are busy because I push them.  Not so much with the other boss.

On a total tangent, my landlord is the best - he's totally cleaned our entire house, even wiped out the fridge! I didn't ask or expect him to. And he's not charging us. Just doing it because. He's also going around and fixing stuff (he even replaced a burnt out bulb in my floor lamp!), again, no charge on our part. Sometimes renting from a person and not a management company is a better deal, if you get a good person.

Here it is - four digit status.  I decided not to have a big CoJ blowout.  Just a little TAN party.  I should have a designation change this week as well, good times.
