Todd,

Totally agree ... with my very limited experience of only two triathlons since October of last year, I can wholeheartedly endorse the notion that tris are won and lost with the run.  Really puts everything else into perspective, especially the swim ... just relax and do it, because you can make up whatever you have to on the bike and run.  And you can have a killer bike ride and blow away your AG, but like me, they ALL caught up and passed as I was shuffling along on the run.

And, not to brag...oh, okay, it's bragging, I admit it...one of the things I look forward to in tri's is being the guy on the run blowing past all the cyclists who I saw pass me on the bike. I'm basically never passed on the run...doesn't mean there aren't a whole buncha guys from my AG ahead of me who are faster then me on the bike AND the run, but then again, in my two podium finishes so far, I medalled because I totally smoked my age group on the run after a MOP bike. And, honestly, I'm not that good a runner...only like top 5-10% of the field in most standalone running races, which is nowhere near the real serious runners.

So now I've reached a point where I feel like money I invest in a tri bike (which I've been holding off on) will be worth it because I won't be spending to improve a strength, but to help bring my limiter up a bit closer to my stronger disciplines (as opposed to just adding to a strength with the expense, as some folks do, and never seriously focusing on addressing the limiter).

Today's workout had a name...see log for details. (You may never see that much narrative from me in a log entry again.)

Hurray!

(If you think signing up for a half gives you a sense of accomplishment, just wait til you finish it!)

I think Liz (my wife) will be signing up for it soon. She was getting nervous about it after her bike fit last night, but I think she's going to commit.

Even if she doesn't, we'll be there for my IM that day and we'll have at least a small cheering section who can root for you, too.

They just opened the Olympic triathlon signup for July 18.  I did it. So now have two, June 6th is the sprint.  I am so psyched or is that psycho?

Scott, these will be your first triathlons, right? You are going to love it.

Got to the gym this morning, even though it's snowing. Did a reverse triathlon but rowing instead of swimming. Then some strength training stuff. Now it's time for breakfast for lunch. Yum.

Kinda like Adventure Racing...only rowing instead of kayaking. Cool.

There is a cool adventure race here I want to do it -- someday. Because it's kayak, mountain bike, run. But I don't have a kayak - yet. I also don't think they do the kayak first; I think it's bike-kayak-run, but I'm not sure.

It's still snowing here... I think we're at about the 5-inch mark. Been snowing all day. But I used my time to make a soup for the first time totally from scratch (including stock). I made vegetable soup with venison meatballs. It's a bit odd of a combination, but venison was the only meat suitable for meatballs on hand! For veggies I used a bunch of everything - squash, tomatoes, onions, orange peppers, carrots and mushrooms. It was actually quite good.

Susie,

Let's make a deal ... you send me some of that soup, and I'll send you some of today's 70 degrees and sunny!  Seriously, I'm jealous of the soup AND the snow!

The first complete ones.  I did the bike on a LiveSTRONG relay team two years in a row.

I biked an hour indoors, ran 3 miles indoors and swam 1200 yards.  Felt really good but for the run, time was good for me but I felt sluggish after an hour spinning.  Swimming on the other hand, felt really good.  Im just going to the gym tomorrow to spin a while and maybe do some strength stuff.

You can have the snow and ice. We are pretty tired of it already in Central Illinois this winter.

I miss my bikes

Going to the gym in a few minutes to spin indoors again.  January and February in Illinois are tough on people who like outdoors.  We haven't had enough ice to cut holes and fish, only enough to cause wrecks and make walking hazardous to your health.  Where's global warming when you need it? (Just a joke.  Actually, our winters are getting warmer...hence the ice and not the snow we used to get when I was a kid.

I'm still contemplating bikes.  I think I'll get a TT if I can get fitted on one and it feels good.  Not enough choices here in town though.  Have to go somewhere to check them out. Most shops here have a couple TT bikes, always the top end and in weird sizes, or they have none at all.

Also will need a wet suit....the first tri here is always cold.  The second in July was below the cut off for wet suits too because of a wet winter.  I'll have to go somewhere for that too...no one sells tri wet suits locally, only snorkeling ones.

Here's a question?  Two piece or one?

Scott,

Definitely get a one-piece suit.  You can get some great deals on a really nice suit for under $200 at a lot of places.  I got a QR Ultrafull for about $150, and I think Blue Seventy Sprint is about $200.  Both good suits, for the beginner or the pro.

BT.com has some great sponsors, and I have had an extremely great experience with trisports.com as an online store.  Really, I've gotten just about everything from them ... fast shipping, WONDERFUL customer service for returns, questions, etc.  I'm sure the others are good as well, this just happens to be the store that I went to.  And went back to many times!

If you're serious about a tri bike, spend a couple hundred more on a plane ticket and come out to either LA or San Diego. We've got a really great store called Nytro (they also have a nice website and would be happy to ship for you), and I know LA has some good tri stores as well.  I know that if Nytro doesn't have what you want, they'll gladly order it for you.  And they take trade-ins, which a lot of places won't.

So, ticket from Midway to San Diego on Southwest ... if you travel Tuesday or Wednesday, you can go round-trip for $200!

Come out to the coast and get a bike in time for spring!

Lordy, that is tempting!  I'll check out the web site.  Many thanks.

One nice thing about studying to be a bike wrench is I don't have to worry about free maintenance by buying locally anymore.  I can do most of it in my own shop.  Haven't ever worked with bar-end shifters but I can figure it out.

One more thing ... Nytro does a great fitting, right on site.  I've not personally had one done there because I bought my road bike from another shop and Nytro is primarily a tri shop, but I do know many people who have been fitted there with great success, and I've seen what they do for a fitting ... very impressive.

Re: wetsuit...check out the "factory outlet" page at Xterra (http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/factory-outlet1.html)...don't know what size you take, but if you happen to be an XL, they have a Ventilator fullsuit in that size for half price ($147). My wife and I both have Xterra suits and liked their customer service a lot. I ordered a "factory outlet" (i.e., discontinued) suit online from them and they were out of my size...so they upgraded me to the new model for no extra charge. Worth a look now or later in the year.

As far a one-piece/two-piece, I'd also say one piece given where you are. Some people in warmer climates like the two piece because they can skip one part and get flotation with less insulation. I don't know too many people who do that. I'd also recommend full sleeve over sleeveless for a first wetsuit.

(FWIW, both my wife and I did our first two tri's in surfer wetsuits and did fine. They aren't good if you're committed to a season of tri's, but for people deciding if they like the sport or not, they are way, way, cheaper than tri wetsuits and do still provide insulation and some buoyancy.)

Hi everyone! We just got back home from camping. I hate to brag...but I have to brag...it is SO AMAZING out today! Over 80 degrees and sunny and so clear you feel like you can reach out and touch Catalina! I love this weather. I don't have seasonal affective disorder...I don't think...but I do get a little down when it's cold and not sunny and I feel crazy excited today. Okay...maybe I do have seasonal affective disorder. Either way, today rocks!

I'm still on track for a great week. I've trained five of the six days. I got a run in while camping despite not really wanting to. I need to get out and ride and/or swim today. Will do so soon. I hope you're all having a great weekend!

Hi all!  Sorry for being quiet throughout the week...  my classes started up again, and I also started obedience classes with my little dog, so I have been working on balancing my time between all of that plus training.  On a good note... I hit every single one of my goals this week! (besides Thursday... I only ran two miles instead of the planned three)  I was really happy about it and I feel really good!

I glanced through the postings throughout the week and it looks like everybody is doing really well!  Congrats and thank you for providing so much motivation!!!

I wish I knew more about bike maintenance. I know how to change a flat (although it takes me forever) and can clean the chain, but that's it.

downloading a couple of podcasts for the week. Good for the commute or while at the gym. I like Ironman Talk and the Dave Ramsey Show.

anyone know of any other good triathlon or weight loss podcasts?

^^^ IMHO, that's really the key to long term success...whether in competition or weight loss...getting to where you do the work even when it isn't appealing in the moment. I don't think I've ever regretted doing a workout that I thought about blowing off. If anything, it makes me feel even more accomplished.

(OTOH, I have regretted impulsive--compulsive, really--choices in eating. Just as the discomfort of a workout is only temporary, so is the enjoyment of poor dietary choices. After the discomfort and the enjoyment are past, you still have the fitness benefits of the workout and the excess calories and fat from the overeating.)

I was reading the local community college list of classes one day and saw motorcycle maintenance and car maintenance and a little box that said if you had ideas for other classes, email so and so.  So I did.  What about bike maintenance?  They were all for it.  I got the guy who helped me build my first bike together with the school and the next thing we knew we had 16 weeks of bike repair from basics all the way up to building wheels offered in three sections.  I took all that, then another basic class with another teacher they got when the first moved to Tennessee to manage a Trek Store.   Check it out.  The local community college may have a class or be willing to start one.  Local bike shops have them too.

Practice changing a a tire at home where it's safe.  Everyone should be able to adjust their own shifters and brakes and know what to do to get home if you blow a spoke.
