I WENT TO THE POOL AND SWAM!!!!!!!  I went this morning before work and just got back in the water and did whatever I wanted.  My times weren't that bad but my endurance is kinda shot.  I was just so proud of myself to get back in the water after almost a 8 week break!

Great job on getting back to the pool!!!

That's great news Pam!  Way to go.

I'm flying out to Wisconsin today so may not be online much this weekend.

Seems there is lots of travel going on...hope your travels are all safe and enjoyable!

ARGH! I did the thing that I know I am not supposed to do and am paying for it now...Last weekend, I put on a brand new pair of runners and proceeded to go for a longish run- mile 10 was when the pain came on and by the time I got home 2 miles later, I was hobbling. No swelling but painful to touch just above the lateral maleolus. When I got back to Calgary and visited my RMT, she suggested that it might be my peroneals and worked them over- much improved but no running just yet. sigh...

I do have a VO2 test this afternoon so I am pretty psyched about that. I believe that it will be done on bike instead of treadmill as coach felt that it would be a better predictor. Also having a bike fit done so I will know what to look for when shopping.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend and getting some good training in!

Made some good progress this week, unfortunately I will be out for mothers day tomorrow, camping next week, and graduation the week after.  So I'm not going to make many miles in the next month, this seems to always happen when I make progress.

As for tapering, I dont really have a ritual, I just go with the flow.  It usually works out for the worst though.

Not a good week for me.  Got to the pool for the first time in a while, but I have been dealing with a bad cause of fatigue and overtraining and have had to take off a handful of days.  I am starting to feel better today so tomorrow I am back at it.  I figured it was better to deal with it now than keep pushing and have to take off longer in the months to come.  Ironman training is hard work.

On the plus side, my IM training story has gotten me selected for a free Monday morning makeover on a local news chanel at a nice salon and spa.  Going to be in June, I just don't know when yet.

Pam, a rest cycle is always good for locking in the training and recovering. Typical I hear is 3 weeks hard and 1 week light. For me I never quite make it to 3 solid training weeks in a row, but hopefully soon. Sounds great that you're locally famous and have the perks!

Baowolf, great ride. I had grand plans this weekend, but just hit the gym today to salvage it on a Sunday afternoon. My training discipline is in Wiscosin this weekend.

Good for you, Pam for recognizing that your body needed a break. Not sure if you are into the HR thing, but another way to monitor overtraining is to watch your RHR first thing in the morning. Apparently the hard cores sleep with their HRM, but you can always have it bedside and slip it on for a quick check before you get out of bed, once you're up it will peak a bit as you go to the bathroom for the morning rituals, then return to bed and watch it come back down. If it takes a long time for HR to come back down- especially over a couple of days-take a day off.

Congrats on the makeover too! That sounds like fun! Be sure to get some before and after shots!

I had an appointment with my coach yesterday and did a bike fit and VO2 test to establish training zones.

Bike fit was great. My previous set up was ok but we moved 0.5 cm here and 3 cm there, with the thought that my long torso and reasonable flexibility should allow for a more aggressive position.

VO2 testing was done on the bike as he felt that it would be a better predictor of how I should be training. We will test again in August before the race to establish HR zones for race day. The interesting piece was when he said that for every minute I am over my number, it will cost a whole 15 minutes on the run!!! Say what??!!  I loved watching the screen with all of the data but did not love the head gear and breathing in and out of a big tube. It was great information and I am psyched for the coaching to begin.

Brr first OWS with snow still very visible in the moutains as it melts and feeds the lake.  It took me quite a while to settle into a rythm in I guess 50 F ish water.  The last 30 minutes went fairly well though and it made the 40 F air seem down right hot afterwards.  It will be harsh getting back into the lake thing and giving up the 84 F pool water, but it saves me 130 miles of driving each swim.  And swimming in the wetsuit again, another adjustment.

Sorry to hear about your fatigue, but yes, the best is just to rest up.  Yes, it is hard work which is why it's an Ironman Wink

Very cool about your selection for the makeover and story.  You're a celebrity!

Yvonne, this sounds pretty cool.  Interesting about the 1 minute over, 15 minutes on the run.  I'm a little skeptical, but curious to hear more when you find out.

"the last 30 minutes"? How long did you spend in that ice bath? Baowolf, you are certainly brave and dedicated. The next time I'm wondering if it's worth making the 10 minute drive to my nice warm swim workout, I'll think of you and get my butt to the pool!

Last week and the past weekend was a bust for me. Lost my mojo after Wildflower the previous weekend and double Mothers Day this past weekend.

Hoping to get back in the saddle starting today. First track workout tonight and looking forward to some run intervals.

Yvonne, I definitely second your comments about tracking resting HR. My garmin tells me when I need to lay off and take it easy. Also interesting about HR zone on the bike and the time correlation on the run. I'll need to read up on that more... I have this terrible habit of blowing up on the run.

Lastly, where exactly did you hurt your foot? At IM Cal last year I hurt the bottom of my foot, the "bridge" part on the outer side of the foot. My shoes were tied too tight. I could bike without pain but had to lay off running for a few months... now I pre-tie my shoes then just slip them on in T2.

Where is everybody? The newbies among us want to hear about gear! Seems like there's so much of it - what do we really need? What can we get by without? Thanks!

Hump day QOTD: what's your favorite or most useful piece of tri-related gear?

Definitely my Garmin Forerunner 305 that I got for Christmas (multisport version). I love tracking HR, pace, cadence, etc. I am a geek about this sort of thing and it is awesome to finally have real data (instead of mapping my runs online or driving routes for distance, etc.). It also helped me see that I can be a very lazy trainer -- long and slow. I am capable of going faster and with the Garmin I have learned to work at a higher intensity when appropriate.

Second in line is my bike. Nothing special, but it's a road bike and it's mine and I never had one before and I love it!! Soon I know I will want a tri bike, but I've only had this one for almost 2 years, so I'm still pretty much a newb with it.

Well, it is 4 months until IRONMAN WI... is it time to start freaking out????

My favorite piece of gear is tied between my Trek WSD 1500 (I haven't be able to take my Trek WSD Equinox out much yet) and my Garmin 205.  Both make my life much happier especially when I am able to bike fast and run in a controlled level.
