And kudos for moving onto lightning bolts from the polka dots... very hot!  I don't have any hot guys swimming in a true speedo, they all wear jammers (and not very well at that!) but I'd take that over the chubby Korean noodle ladies, ha!

2 consecutive swim days with another one on tap for Friday.  Starting to catch up in the water but dying to get back on my bike.

I did a 45minute trainer ride and my legs are trashed lol. Hardest, shortest workout I've ever done!

Brutal.

5mins easy, 5minutes 30s sprints/30s easy, 5 minutes steady

5x1min MAX effort, 1minute super easy
3minutes easy spin
5x1min MAX effort, 1minute super easy
3minutes easy spin
2min max effort.

Kinda of spin as a cool down, but mainly try not to fall off the bike.

Crap, I read these things and know that somewhere they are going to show up in my schedule...
Just finished a trainer ride here this evening, it was pretty good, but after a solid tempo run last night and a quick short run this morning, my legs were a little tired out.

It's supposed to be rainy here all weekend. No good.  Shouldn't effect tomorrow much though. We have a 4-day weekend for MLK weekend--a perk of the federal job (they get it from you at other times, trust me!)--but lots on the to-do list, including a swim with Hilde tomorrow morning. Hopefully creepy flipper floating guy isn't there. As shocking and scary as that speedo is, I'd much prefer seeing that at the pool than this guy....he stares at you under the water when you swim. Eww.

Morning everyone.  Today's question is all about the technical stuff.  By this I mean heart rate zones, lactate threshold, perceived effort and that kind of stuff.  Here is my story; basically every time I start a marathon training program I tell myself that I'm going to be scientific about it.  This time I'll do the recommended runs as tempo runs, speed work, etc.  And then I go about the plan just focusing on mileage doing them all at the same pace and ignore the true training components.  Over the last 5 years, I've knocked about 20 minutes off my marathon time (PR of 4:01), but haven't made any real significant improvements.

I hope to approach this year and my triathlon training differently.  As I read the plans and consult the books and charts I feel my eyes glaze over and a nagging voice in my head tells me to just do the workouts and forget about all this technical stuff.  What do you all do?

By the way, I usually run with my Garmin 305 and my HR monitor.  I generally don't ride my bike/trainer with it, but I could.  Or maybe I should get a dedicated HR monitor.  Does anyone have any recomendations or advice on how I should approach things?

Good morning team!  Happy Friday!

Today is a rest day for me.  Had an awesome tempo run last night.  I occupied a treadmill for and hour and ten mins despite the 30 minutes limit - there were free 'mills the whole time so i wasn't keeping anyone from their workout.

anyway, that's a good question, Janet, and I have to say that I don't do a lot of HR training. Sometimes I wear it just for info.  But because, like you, I come from a running background. I have a set of paces for running that are tempo speed and stead/easy ranges and have an idea of what each run should be.  I am now training for a road race so i stick to them as much as possible but there does have to be some flexibility.  But with swim and bike I am still new to those sports and it's the off-season so I am mostly just putting the time in. When my run race is over then I will probably be focusing more on the other stuff.

I am no coach and the others will chime in but you don't have to be too scientific about it but you should have a purpose for a workout so you know when you need to go hard or easy or know when you're building strength so you can match the effort required.

Have a great day everyone!

I'm very old school and use almost no technology when I train. Only time I wear a watch is when I'm on the track. My road bike doesn't have a bike computer on, and I ride it most of the time right now. I do use the wall clock at the pool though, but if it's out I'm not wearing a watch either! If you train 'naked' like me or if you train with power and/or HR... either can work just fine. It's up to you to find out what works best for you physically and mentally.

I'm too anal and detail oriented to train by data, I'll drive my self crazy with it. I start to have less fun with it all when I do that, and due to that I don't see any gains from it for me. However, if you can't train by feel, as in you just end up doing everything at the same pace. You may need to look into it a bit more.

Janet--the technology isn't a MUST, but the perceived effort does get important.  You DO need to do the speedwork, and tempo runs, etc. as a component of your training if you're looking for improvements.  Now, maybe you are totally great at doing it by effort, and if it says run tempo you can do it.  This is where the technology can help.  If I train solely by effort, I find that I don't push to where I need to--this is primarily for running---that HR and pace help me push to where I need to for improvement.  You don't need to use ALL those methods you mentioned, but rather find which one BEST helps you  get the plan done, not just the mileage, and then you improve.

Rest day, mainly to try and get my foot healed up. I had one planned for Monday followed by a easy week, but I'm just jumping ahead.

I did get in a fun, solid swim last night with a group.

Saturday bike and run are done!  Rode for the 1st time on aerobars (just bought some clip ons for my road bike).  Almost lost it one time but overall I like them.  Got some adjusting to do.... neck a little sore.

Woot woot! Super bike--ended up being trainers on a what was a good weather day, but it didn't start that way and the radars/predictions didn't indicate it would be good. But a friend came over, and we set up the trainers in my living room and we watched my DVR recording of the '09 Kona race, then we did a tough 1.5 hour Spinerval set meant to improve a 40k--it was a butt kicker after already riding pretty solid 1.5 hours.  I'm feeling good though!  Good run planned for tomorrow!

Brittany,

In your blog the other day you mentioned doing an APFT run.  What is APFT?  I'm pretty sure that FT stands for Funtional Threshold but what does AP stand for?

Jeff--ah, if only it was something cool and special.  nope, it was the "Army Physical Fitness Test"--2 mins of push-ups, 2 mins of sit-ups, 2 mile run.  It's on a scale where you can get up to 100 points per category (so up to 300 total) depending upon # of reps and run-time.  Does it actually measure physical fitness? No...it's not a piece of cake, but it's not a complete assessment, that's for sure!

Good afternoon team!

Had a great run today.  I think i shall be in good shape for the race - it's at the end of March.  And it's positively balmy the last couple of days.  But that just means within a couple of degrees either way of the freezing mark. hahaha!

I need to get my strength in for the week since I didn't do it yesterday but I will take it easier given today's effort.

Have a great day everyone!

How do you return to a running program after being injured for about a week? I have been told by my MD that I can run, but slowly. Should I just follow the 10% rule or can it be modified to accomodate training that was done prior to the injuries? I got a 14K next month and a half mary in March, both of which are scheduled for training runs anyway, but I still want to be able to do my best.
