I am 5"10 and have a really long torso.....does 56 cm bike sound right??? Been to a couple different shops in the chicago land area and the bike seem really big? Any thought or words? In general, a 54 might be better for ya... it is better to go just a bit smaller than go too big. But it really depends on the bike. QRoo, Cervelo, Trek, Specialized, etc... all have slightly different specs... some a 54 or 56 is smaller/larger based on other manufacturers. Additionally, the top tube may be shorter or longer. The best bet is to try several different ones... narrow it down to comfort/fit and price... unless of course price (like me) is a greater issue, then try and work around that. Good luck! What brand is peaking your interest? my .02 - the Cervelo P2... a darn good bike for the price! I personally am a proud member of the QRoo mafia... but price, quality, reliability, performance... the P2 is HAWT! (just my HO) I can not seem to get comfortable on the Cervelo....it was my first choice just because everyone who has one loves it? I am now on to the QRoo and Blue bikes, the Blue is nice becasue it comes in a 55. Money of course is a contender in choice but I have a reasonable budget....so I should be able to pick up a nice frame and build from there, |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last time I had a great stretch on the legs, I had to quit the soccer team and could not walk for two weeks. ![]() Trin2bfast - 2009-12-16 10:56 AM KeriKadi - 2009-12-17 9:40 AM Trin2bfast - 2009-12-17 9:33 AM Yes, BUT... warm-up with a walk or light jog for 5 minutes.... Then stretch lightly (30 second holds at most) or do dynamic stretching (skips, hops, leg kicks, calisthenics - don't do just straight static stretches on cold muscles) The stretching before can adversely effect your performance. Do your run then warm-down with a walk... then do your more focused stretches ~ holding them for 45-60 seconds each. Hamstrings, quads, hip flexors, groin, calves, glutes and lower back... they are all connected and affect one another. Then ice or ice bath after hard (interval / long runs 1hr+) That sounds lovely, however, if I did all that I wouldn't have time left to run. Once I check the girls in I have about 90 minutes and if I took the time to do all that I wouldn't be able to run longer than 4 or maybe 5. I did the ice bath once, not sure I'll ever muster the courage to do it again. This coming from a woman that gave birth w/o pain meds 5 times! I took me several hours to warm up after my run yesterday w/o the ice bath and with a hot shower. On a good note I do hold my stretches and I don't bounce or anything though I am positive I don't stretch enough. I will give the dynamic stretching a shot. What is a good stretch for the hip flexors? Mine really start aching at 6-7 miles. It is hard to add the extra minutes for stretching, but the dividends may actually be greater for you then the extra mile you would give up. If you recover better, faster & stronger. Then you can increase your run inensity a little and make better fitness gains in the 4-5 miles you have... eventually pushing the milage out as your speed increases. Proper recovery and injury prevention is a vital part of endurance training. You can do the stretches after you get home with the girls... if there is a will there will be a way! Make it happen missy ~ don't make me call a Whammm-bulance! Drop the coin on recovery tights ~ next to my 305! Best training tool out there... ~ It would be third of course if Eric would give me his PT and pick himself up a new one ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hmm, I might have to seriously consider using them Trin2bfast - 2009-12-16 12:19 PMHA! Okay... (first) you're a keeper... Ideally, soon after long runs or High Intensity Training (HIT) intervals/speed work. But for many of us that isn't feasible. Your SPANX (me)... will offer some benefit. You may also consider the Sock vs. the full tight. Then in the evening or at night you can don the full tight. For men they make the dress sock (not quite the same compression as the ZOOT/2XU/et al socks) for daily use... which will work much like your Spanx. You wil see the socks and calf guards at races...especially the longer distance stuff. They also come in the active and recovery. |

Not much tonight just getting ready for tomorrow. Tomorrow my parents get here. They are driving together from Colorado. Did I mention they have been divorced for 37 years? Should be interesting. Actually, they are both great with the kids and we are all really looking forward to their visit. I am not sure what time they get in tomorrow but I have a long run planned and Ken has a bike ride with Justine in the morning. Knowing my Mom we will be running around town Sunday picking up last minute things for Christmas and doing the grocery shopping. I am really looking forward to the boys being home for 3 weeks! I love having them here ![]() |

I'm 5'9" but my length in is my legs and I ride a 56cm. I'd say try the bikes on. Don't hesitate to ask them to put the bike on a trainer or take for a spin around the parking lot if you can. You may find a 54 that is perfect or figure out you need a 56. Ken is 5'10" and my bike is taller than his bike - his height is also in his torso. Keri is 1" shorter than I in total height with a 34" inseam compaired to my 32" inseam. I was going to say I am short below the waist but Keri knows better and can defend me there. ![]() Time on the bike is the only way to know for sure after you have a good fit. I have an early morning wake up call to get a run in before heading to some glass museum in Tacoma then on to Seattle for a day of fun. Hoping to get some snowshoeing or x-country skiing Sunday. I hear the mountain is getting dumped on. I went for a run and in 30 minutes there were 31 posts. That's some early morning dedication there. (and more came in as I was reading) ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gavisk - 2009-12-16 6:44 PM LOL!!!evondo - 2009-12-17 3:45 PMYou bring up a good point, a PowerTap in and of itself will not help you if you don't know how to train with it. My broad advice is there are many books and coaches that can help you with this. For my athletes that train with power they know how to race with power and train at the level I tell them... Some know the method behind the numbers but not all, it's not their job to it's mine ![]() The most important data with the power meter is the power. HR has its benefits in certain situations, especially racing, but rarely for training although there are some tests that can be done to measure fitness with power & HR drift. For racing, (so yes I race with it as well) it allows you to accurately pace yourself for longer bikes and regardless of the course, heat, humidity, headwind, tailwind, etc you will have your optimal bike split. I won't use it for pacing in sprints but Olympic and up it makes sure that you're not pushing to hard in the beginning of the bike. Especially the longer HIM/IM races your RPE will feel very low in the beginning and you won't know you've over exerted until it's to late. I don't even set race goals based on mph anymore because it's pointless all I can control is the power I put to the pedals. My mph is determined by the course and weather on that day. The other time a Powertap shines over HR/GPS is intervals which are a necessity to get big gains in biking after the intial base. During shorter interval durations (3-8') your HR does not respond to the stress quick enough to give you an acurate indication of effort not to mention HR changes on a day-to-day basis due to weather, sleep, nutrition, etc... For me personally it taught me to learn how to suffer on the bike, as bad as that sounds it was what allowed me to push above my comfort zone. During intervals pre-powertap I was slacking near the middle and never even knew it because RPE lies and since my HR was already elevated HR would remain stable giving me the sense I was working hard. Once you establish your FTP you can create a power curve that says for a given interval duration you should push X. So when you goto train mph, HR, wind, heat, course doesn't matter all that matters is you push X for Y duration. Clear as mud? ![]() gavisk - 2009-12-17 12:37 PM I have a question for you Powertap aficionados: I’ve been doing some searches along the lines of “how to use Powertap”, and what I keep getting is a laundry list of the data it gives you. I’m not having much luck finding out how people are are actually using the data. Could someone give me a quick rundown of the main things you pay the most attention to? Are you looking simply at power output over time? Power x HR? Average power over distance? Those things almost seem to provide information overload. Is the data they provide really that much more useful than, say, what you get from a GPS/HR monitor and cycle computer? That is really clear. Thank you. My next question is: how do I convince my wife that I need it? |

The store I go to measured me and said I'm either a 54 or 56 in a p2c (i'm 6 ft). They told me to come in the first of the yr because then they'll have both sizes and I should take both out for a spin and pick the one i'm most comfortable with. His point is you should get the one you feel most comfortable on and you don't know it unless you try it. He does two fittings one quick one so you can test ride it for 20-30 min and then a formal one after you buy it. A good salesman not only will measure you but also check your flexibility because flexibility may change you fit a bit too.evondo - 2009-12-18 9:21 AM Do they have 54s in stock? ![]() NRG42 - 2009-12-18 9:18 AM I spending 2-4 hours on a spin bike right now and becoming very comfy. Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A sick little girl is not cooperating with my sleep patterns at the moment, so I blew off another trainer ride this morning - that makes 5 days in a row. At least I'm consistent! When I bought my bike I didn't have a proper fit done and ended up getting a 60cm Trek, I chose that over the 58cm. I went into another shop and was talking to the guy, and he said I should have been looking at a 54-56cm frame (I'm 6'). But then he did a couple of quick measurements on their fit stand. Based on my Torso I should be on a 54, based on my inseam I should be on a 60 - I'm all legs. When I got clip on bars I went to an independent fit guy, and feel quite comfortable on the bike. What did I learn for the whole experience? I'd probably be best suited to a custom frame, like a Guru. But that's for another lifetime. |
