Subject: RE: BikerGrrrl's Group - CLOSED
Need some advice.  I'm doing a sprint tri this weekend about 1-1/2 hours from home.  I reserved a hotel room for Saturday night so I wouldn't have to drive over on Sunday morning (also so I could do packet pick-up and hopefully a practice swim on Saturday afternoon).  My husband is not going with me - which is OK, our daughter has plans for Saturday night and Sunday is her b-day so I didn't expect him to go along.  Somehow my mom found out I was racing this weekend and has asked if she could come along.  I wasn't hiding the race from her, it's just not something I talk a lot about.  Anyway, my relationship with my mom has always been awkward.  I sometimes envy women who have a "friend-to-friend" relationship with their moms - ours will never be that way (she has a better relationship with my SIL than with me).  Part of me would like for her to come along - it would be nice to have someone waiting for me at the finish line and possibly taking pictures for me.  The other part of me thinks it would be a mistake.  I was kind of looking forward to going by myself, away from work, family and all that stuff and just enjoying the race.  I'm afraid if she's there, it'll just cause me to stress out.  If I wasn't going over the day before, I wouldn't have any problem with her coming along the day of the race.  It's the "extra time" together that I'm not so sure about.  Not sure what to do.

I can totally relate....

So, is the assumption that she would come with you (as opposed to come on race day)?  The best scenario would be that she comes on her own and just tell her to show up about 10 minutes before the swim.

I am doing an away race and was kind of mortified when my mom wanted to come.  Fortunately for me I am sharing a room with my friend and so I had to tell her right away that she would need her own lodging.  In addition to that, I said "I am flattered that you would like to come and watch.  On the day before the race, my sole goal is to prepare.  I will need to pick up my packet, do a swim, and get to bed early.  I won't be able to walk around much, sight see, etc."  I wanted to be extra clear that I'd be happy to have her on race day, but the night before was part of the prep and would be really boring.  I think it's important to set expectations clearly, but I know it's easy to border on "rude" - especially here in passive aggressive country, aka Minnesota.

Will any of that help you sort this out?

That said, it's interesting that she's interested in tagging along and maybe she's making an effort.  Perhaps this is a good opportunity to find something that you can enjoy together?  I wasn't the type of kid who did sports, my mom was NOT a "soccer mom"   This sort of activity was totally new for us.  It turns out that she likes watching races and so I've resigned myself to that.

Another thought.  Do you have another race later that's local?  You could say "I'd love to have your support, but this race will be really boring.   The night before will be dull in the hotel and no one else I know will be at the race.  Why don't you come when my husband and daughter will be watching?  Otherwise it's several hours of just standing around."

I always go between wanting to be alone and then being lonely.   I travelled to Philadelphia for a race (half marathon) and was alone the night before and through the next day after the race.  I was DYING to talk to someone I knew!  I called my husband, but it was lonely.  I battle with this a lot.

tough spot, but emily has some good advice.

i'm very up front and honest with my parents and would just tell my mom i'd rather go alone, but we have a different kind of relationship.

i haven't exercised in 4 days.  i think that's a record for me.  circumstances just prevented it.  i'm trying not to freak out or anything, but now its 2 weeks before the tri and i'm going out of town this weekend too.

Thanks for the advice.  I was kind of thinking the same thing.  I really wouldn't mind if she's there for race morning, I just wanted the night before to myself.  Fortunately(?) my hotel room is prepaid and it would cost quite a bit (more than I paid for the room!) to change the reservation - and it's only for 1 person right now.   So I think that will probably keep her from coming - she wouldn't want to get a separate room for herself.  And I know she'd be bored sitting around the night before - it's not like I'm going somewhere "touristy".  I am doing another race in September that's local, so I figured I'd let her know about that one.  She's asked about my races before (mostly just running races) but never actually come to watch one.  Hopefully I can talk her into just coming over on race morning.

You put in many good weeks, months, of training.  You'll be fine!  Don't let it psych you out.

That said - can you sneak in a short run or anything?  Just do the best you can.

got in a great swim this afternoon, i'm really seeing a dramatic difference in myself.  hurrah for me!

yep, i can get in some kind of activity, i'm just going to try to keep my schedule flexible.  my hostess for the weekend is either going to take us to the park (with plenty of walking/hiking/running trails) or to the lake.  or maybe both.  i'm going to go prepared to get some sort of workout in - i'm just not going to be able to have the kind of structure i normally have.

just looking back over my training logs - 3 months ago i swam 600 m in 30 minutes, that was 1/2 lap front crawl 1/2 lap backstroke.  in my training log i wrote  played around with a few different breathing technique & even had a small personal victory. It'll sound lame to you swimmers, but I completed an half lap without having to stop mid way and come up for air.

the same month i did 500m in 26 minutes.

today i completed 600m in 22 minutes and 45 seconds.  all front crawl, and with just a tiny breath between laps.  i'm seeing some serious improvement! Cool

Went to the doctor today to get some blood drawn. Everyone pray that my hemoglobin has gone up. If it doesn't that means there is something seriously wrong with me and we don't know what.  I have a feeling it's gone up. I've been tired the past few days, but I think I need some B12. I'll get an injection tonight. I'll find out on Thursday.

Don't have much advice on the mom front, but I agree with what Emily said. I also agree with liking to be alone the night before. I'm lucky in that the people I stay with also do tri's (they're the ones who got me into this mess :D) so they understand and even encourage the "boring evening".

RR from yesterday is up - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=209445&posts=15&start=1.  I didn't do as well as I would have liked - partly due to the weather, partly due to my own stupiditySmile.  But lessons learned and overall I enjoyed the race and would love to go back next year and do it again!

Steve - the one armed swim is an interesting thing to do.  Did you extend your stationary arm, or keep it at your side?  I can do it extended and it's fun, but at my side is a recipe for drowning.    Congrats to your daughter!

Brooke - sorry to hear that...
