pdbman - 2010-11-24 5:35 PM Its fun to have things switched for once. Bill is worried about it getting to warm and its plenty cold here. Just got back from a bike ride. 16 F with just enough wind to get bonus points. I can't wait to calculate the points. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze a run in between work and having to get cleaned up for the family movie night.

PS-I'm glad I dug out my tights this time. My ankles stayed warm.

I need to figure out what to wear for real winter running... Pre winter here and you'll find me running in my summer favorite super thin capris. Usually cut off right below the knee, but one pair is just above the ankle. What are the chances of getting frost bite on the lower legs on a typical non-blizzard winter day? I know the answer to this... wear pants. All of my pants are loose on the bottom which will get that area of my leg all cold and wet anyway.

What's worse, wet/cold/covered lower leg or dry/cold/bare lower leg?

Any other suggestions for someone who can't pay $100 for winter running tights/pants right now?

Melissa - the only worry I have running is wind chill frost bite in an area that a man just doesn't want to lose.  I was running a couple of winters ago with a huge wind and I went straight to EMS to by some fleece tights that keep everything comfortable.

Right now it was low 30's - 20+ mph winds - rain and I just had wind pants on.

Running will keep you pretty warm no matter what - biking is a whole different story - but I would not worry about spending big $$ on tights for running.  And as you know I have the same climate as you so as well.

Thanks for the input!

I bought some Sock Guy fuzzy kneesocks -- very cute and warm.  I don't like frozen ankles.

eta: I don't think I've paid more than $40 for a pair of winter running tights -- you can find some cheap closeout deals online.

I almost got blown off my bike today, but it wasn't cold enough for CWWC pts.  Fine with me -- it was a gorgeous fall day!  Looks like it's going to be a nice weekend too Smile

I had my first good real snow run yesterday and it was tough!  The path is usually packed down, but it was not really so each step was work.  Then I switched to the streets after about 30 minutes, and that was glare ice - whole new muscle groups.  Yikes.  It was the most exhausting 45 min run ever.

Bit late to the party, is it still ok to join in?

Had my first sub 0c run of the year yesterday (-2c, but wind chill brought it down to -7c even though it was a fairly light breeze. Does that count as -2 or -7 for the score?) for 54mins and a rather brisk -6c this morning for 32mins!

So far the wind hasn't been fast enough to modify my score.

Suddenly it is 45 degrees!  Woo-hoo!  Swam this morning and will both run and bike a short bit this afternoon.  No points I am sure

nope, you just go by actual temperature as you get multiplier from the wind via the wind ranges.  you would be double dippin then.

Shame as the wind wasn't blowing fast enough to change the multiplier, just bitterly cold.

Knee socks are a great idea! I can wear them with my capris (pure style! lol) and not get any slush splash or water climbing up the pants.

What online sources do you use to buy your tights?

No snow here yet but I imagine my first snow run will sound something like this.

And with all this perfect CWWC weather I've been sick and my wife won't let me out of the house. I threatened to go for a little run this evening since I'm starting to feel better... If looks could kill. She threw in a couple verbal threats just to make sure I got the message.

That's what we had, until it started to thaw yesterday, fortunately it hasn't gotten above 40 yet, but it is well into the upper 30's.

I need some of that snow. We got just enough snow to end my roller ski season but not enough to open the ski trails.
Too bad they didn't make snow on the CC trails, the down hill skiing opened this past weekend.

I needed 12 road miles to get 300 for the month and to double last years total so I went out after work tonight - Temps in the high 20's winds in the  high single digits gusting to the high teens.  I was slow out there too, so my hour loop took me 70 minutes but at least it scored me some CWWC points unlike last week

Still praying for snowSurprised

We got the snow this last week and now we're getting more cold. Currently 12 F on its way down to 7 tonight. My son is suffering through -2 at school. He's not a fan of winter.

Can't believe I woke up and was disappointed that it was only 1c(33F)! At least the snow had finally decided to reach London, so a nice 3.5 multiplier (with the wind) and a 38min run made for some nice points.
