Arend, next time you are in town I'll bring you to the endless pool.

you'll love it.

Thanks, they intrigue me.  I almost tried one in Kona a couple of years ago.

Carrying the food/weight/nutrition discussion on from Fred v.II, I started yesterday actually tracking calories in/out with myfitnesspal app.  It's an eye opener, all the hidden calories we take in, they start to add up to something significant.  If nothing else it's making me extremely conscious of what is going in my mouth.  If I eat too many calories for breakfast, I am going to screw up my dinner.....  If there are any calories left.  Also making me aware of what kind of calories are going in.  Cra* calories or good calories?

Has me at 1880 kcals a day for a 1 pound/week weight loss.  Obviously exercise out can increase that, so with yesterday's run and swim total in was 2800, which is a little more manageable.  But a day like today, where I am not sure I'll get any exercise in, going into a bit of panic mode as it's 1 pm and I've only got 625 calories left for the day......

Trying to balance not beng totally obsessive over it, but also taking it seriously.

Chris, I've used MFP and found it to be really easy to use and effective. I gained a good bit of weight a few winters ago after 4 months of negligible activity (new job, long commute, lots of travel - ie eating out).  A couple things I recall:

- they have a really good inventory of food/brands/etc. It's pretty easy to find and enter food. I think most people eat the same things over and over (I do, for sure) so once you have your list built, it's quick andy easy to enter.

- be realistic about how much weight you should try to lose per week. I initially set my calorie count for 1 1/2 lbs loss weekly. That was too much. I backed off to 1 lb/week and was more successful. (as a guy, you will have a higher target than I did. My target cals were 1250 less exercise)

- don't obsess about a bad day, especially if you didn't work out. It was virtually impossible for me to meet the daily calorie goal for weight loss if I didn't work out. note above calorie target. It's the week cum that really matters, not any individual day. Use their reports. They are a nice visual of how you're doing.

-Do take the time to really understand calorie counts of food and portions. Eventually you will find yourself using the quick calorie add tool and be fine. On really horrid days - work restaurant dinners etc I just added 1000 cals for the meal and was done with it.

- Wine has a lot of calories. (ummm, perhaps a quantity issue

I lost 20lbs. After I held steady for a month or so, I quit using it and have kept my weight consistent. I think it helped me reset portions and eliminate junk calories.

Hope it works for you as well.  Kim

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Hubby is running a half marathon tomorrow so I signed up for the 5k, it was free and down the street from our house. I'll have time to do that then hit the road to travel across the city for my son's Football game.

I just got a new Garmin Forerunner 10 in the mail today. Looks perfect for me, just time, distance, pace and seems to interface well on Garmin Connect. I'm going to be ashamed to look at it after the 5k tomorrow though. It's going to be very humbling for me, I was a decent 5k runner with a PR in the 18's but I'll be lucky to break 25 tomorrow

Do it with a smile, enjoy it and indeed you are a lucky woman.

We are privileged to be able to run. Sometimes we forget this. I know I do.

Have fun, but smoke someone just before the finish line :-)

Why does everyone hate the red Shiv?

I like the fact that my road bike is white and tri bike black. Kind of a Yin and Yang sort of thing.

I do like red bikes, but I've heard a bunch of times that people didn't really like the Shiv in red. Was it just the type of red or the paint scheme?

I just looked at some pics and I can't decide why I don't like it.  It just doesn't appeal to me.

My wife on the other hand prefers the red.

Swimming.  2500yd workout, what % of that workout would/should be drills, etc.

Second part of the question.  If swimming 4x week, how many workouts would include drill work and how many just swim.

Curious how the program Fred is following breaks this up.

For me, I think it has to do with the unique frame design.  The down tube and head tube are huge, and something just doesn't look right when it's an eye popping color like red.

Yup, yup, yup.

Something we take for granted is our ability to even do the things that we are on a daily basis not that impressed with. What I mean is we are able to swim run and bike, when I know friends on this site who aren't able to do that because of illness or injury.

Problem is we only really miss it when it's truly gone.

Deep thoughts....

Absolutely..thank you guys! It's almost a year to the day that I woke up from knee surgery to the surgeon telling me that I will never run again. I'm not saying that I am some kind of medical marvel but I do feel that I have another shot, at least for now, so the 5k will be sweet no matter what time!

Neil, I'm not sure how to answer this with anything other than "It depends".

Personally, I do almost no drills but I'm not sure I'm a valid reference point.  I will ask you this though; do you do drills that address a specific problem with *your* technique or just some random drills that you have seen suggested?

I haven't experimented with too much cold (near freezing) riding but every year I say I am going to.  For me, the first things to get cold are my hands and toes.  I solve the toe problem by putting duct tape over all the vents in my shoes.  My wife actually bought me shoe covers last year but they were the wrong size so we had to send them back and never replaced them.  For the fingers, what seems to work best is some cheap knitted gloves from the dollar store with some full fingered cycling gloves over top.  I haven't tried either of those in anything close to freezing though, maybe 5 degrees C?  At a temp like that I can get away with regular running tights over my cycling shorts and a long sleeved base layer shirt underneath a heavier cycling jersey.  Maybe a cycling vest as well depending on wind conditions.  I would also wear a light beanie type of cap under my helmet.

Like Tom, I can run in just about anything so I don't see why I couldn't handle cold on the bike but I just haven't tried that hard.

I've ridden down in the 30's lots.  Not sure I'd like to go below that.  I have neoprene shoe booties I put on.  I have a pair of winter riding tights and usually I have on a long sleeve shirt and my windproof coat.  On my head is usually a beanie.  32 is a lot more pleasant to ride in in the sun then in the rain.  Sadly I have done in the rain more often then I can count.  So far I have gotten hypothermia twice on the bike, once mountain biking (involved rain turning to snow, all unplanned), and once on the road bike.  The road bike threw me for a loop cause we were climbing and clearly extending lots of energy and when I turned around it was 12 miles back down the hill but I could barely handle it.  That case was just mild and both scared the crap out of me.  Once I had to start putting in effort it got much better and the rain stopped.  I am much more cautious now and have become kind of a fair weather only biker.  Thankfully it doesn't rain much in Arizona (both incidents were when I lived in Oregon).

Going to try and quickly get in a short little run then I am heading out of town for a weekend of camping.  And drinking.  Ales on Rails.  A 4 hour train ride through the canyons and what not of northern Arizona (up near Sedona area, which is about where I might be moving to next).  Should be some hiking on Sunday but no sbr
