Master 1609 Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: Feb Challenge Originally posted by JBacarella 45 minute runch on the dreadmill. Somewhat frustrating cable was out (first world problem), something broke during our -27 F high wind night. So I opted to run with my I phone. I caught my hand on the ear bids ripped them out of my ears and watched my phone fly into the wall bounce back onto the treadmill and the get shot onto the floor behind me. Thank God for the otter case or frustrating would have turned to bad. So I spent the last 30 minutes of the run staring at a wall and cursing the cable company and the weather. Jim, -27 F??? Wow, I better stop complaining about the heat here. Edited by markz 2014-03-03 1:06 AM |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Rookie Questions... Originally posted by JoePetto Mitch: How was the swim clinic? Lessons learned? Joe: The swim clinic was great. It was hosted by Sheila Taormina (gold medalist in freestyle in Atlanta Olympics and ITU World Champion). She has written books on swimming and my wife bought me "Swim Speed Secrets for Swimmers and Triathletes" a year or so ago. I thought the clinic she was giving in my area would be a great way to jump start my swim training and be good to put action to words in the book. There were 20 people total in the clinic. Sheila's philiosophy is that the pull is the most important technique and part of freestyle swimming. She goes into the physics of the pull and has a strict philosophy on what your stroke should look like. Basically the "S-stroke" but with a lot of detail on why and how. We did about 1 hour of classroom time, some warm up running drills and then 1 1/2 hours in the pool. We did a number of drills to break down the stroke and to learn to feel the correct stroke. She also advocates using resistance bands and the halo swim system to practice on land. The inventor/designer of the halo system was there as well. Not sure what else to say but that I get her philosophy and am going to try to refine my stroke (my stroke has high elbows but is way to wide). I also need to get stronger in my back and shoulders. I'm happy to answer any question and have posted links to her site, her book on amazon and the halo system below. http://swimspeedsecrets.com/ http://www.amazon.com/Swim-Speed-Secrets-Swimmers-Triathletes/dp/19... http://www.haloswimtraining.com/guest/index.php |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Rookie Questions... Originally posted by bryanwebb Thanks, I look to learn alot from other folks in the group. Then, as I catch a clue, I can help others. Right now I'm in, 8 weeks to a race, what do I do? So a couple of questions (probably dumb so go easy on me): 1. Are there biking shorts that folks swim and run in? 2. Does a swim cap help guys much? 3. How much do you feel (in a sprint race) you need to have biking shoes and clips or should you ride in your running shoes? Probably some real rookie questions but looking for advice. Bryan My input to above: 1) get some tri shorts as recommended. I swear by the De Soto Sports brand, but they are pricey. But they offer good compression and outstanding comfort. 2) I only wear swim cap when racing cause they make me. Its a liability issue for the race companies. 3) If you have time to get clipless pedals and learn to clip in then do it. You can pedal much more efficiently with clipless pedals. practice transitions so that you can move from bike shoes to running shoes. keep asking questions, that is one of the points of these groups. |

Hey Matthew, it was really hot on the beach where we did the triathlon. Fortunately, Guatemala City where I live is 2 hrs away and sits at 5000ft (1500mt) above sea level, so the temps here are pretty decent now. Sorry, not meant to be bragging to those with tough weather conditions right now, but always welcome to visit me down in Guatemala! |

LMFAO...I wish, gabe. Though, Sheila maintains that through an effective and strengthened pull that will be the result. Time to do the drills and the work in the pool. I believe it will be a long but rewarding process. |

I have found swim coaches are like golf professionals - each one has their own view and program and the best one is whatever works for you. The one thing they all have in common is more swimming is better than less swimming. it is freaking cold here, but not as bad as Michigan. The picture is my front yard. Approximately 160 miles away is Canada. This the second time in recorded history that Lake Huron Froze all the way across. The last time was 20 years ago when we moved here. I live on the Lake side of a point. Inside the bay the thickest I heard the ice was is 42". There is a picture of my oldest daughters in my albums doing a polar bear swim. When they cut the ice this year it was 30" thick. I couldn't tell you how thick it is at my house. But the wooden posts in the picture are 10 feet above the waterline and the ice berms are easily 10 feet higher than that. We have not seen most of the roads in town since December. It was snowing when I took the picture. Last week we were tied with the record of 73.5 inches. We broke that today. Even though I wither like a cut flower in the heat, this year no complaints.
