Happy B-day Doug and welcome to the 50+ club.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  My wife and I went to Tokyo for Sat/Sun to see a friend who was passing through on business.   I got to run the loop around the emperor's palace on both days (he has a nice little place in the center of Tokyo - 5.5 km around the outside) - haven't done that in quite a few years.

Dan, that sounds really cool to run around the Emperor's palace.  I always imagine it to be so crowded but it is on my list of places to visit.  Hope you guys had fun visiting with your friend.

My most "exotic" place to run was a jog through the Tuileries Gardens and then along the Seine River in Paris about 10 years ago...kind of beautiful at the break of dawn during the late fall.

Aaah, nice memories.  Anyone else have any cool places they've run?  I know Julia recently was in India???  Did you run there, gotta run?

cool run dan!  my favorite route so far is the st charles street car line in new orleans.  though there are some cool venues here in the states, ireland, italy and a laps on a ship in the middle of the atlantic.

Happy Birthday Doug!!!!

Linda - so sorry about the strep. That is so painful.

Grapejuice - love the new bike. White hot!!!

Kim - glad the foot is starting to feel better.

Trevor - I LOVE COSTCO!! And the food court there rocks.  Where else can you get a foot long hotdog and a coke for $1.50?

I had a horrible experience this weekend but it was a good lesson learned.  All last year I ran on gels and water b/c HEED turned my stomach.  However this winter I switched to HEED and dropped the gels, no real reason why, just sort of happened.  Well on yesterday's long run I used only gels and water, no HEED.   Things were going fine for the first half and then I started falling into the cycle of, feel weak = take a gel; still feel weak = take more gel.......did that a few too many times and had to call the hubby to come get me.  Apparently my tummy shut down around mile 6 but didn't tell my brain.  I kept thinking of Kyle at IMCDA where she just puked to feel better on the run.  Man if only I could have.  Funny thing was I didn't want to puke but I just wanted to STOP MOVING.   I got home and ate a bagel and felt much better.   Lesson learned, used HEED and supplement with gels SPARINGLY!!!!

Linda - so sorry to hear about Boston! I hope everyone is feeling better soon.

Tracy - sounds horrible! Nutrition on long runs is a challenge.

Kim - I didn't get to run outside in India because there was too much traffic and air pollution. The most exotic place I've ever run was the North Slope of Alaska. I spent a couple of summers doing field work there in college, and we used to run out to an old landing strip near the field station. Once, I got ambitious and ran out along the pipeline haul road, but I decided that was a bad idea when I had to jump off the road as trucks came roaring by. I was also kind of worried about bears. Surprised

That is so cool!  Was it anywhere near Pt. Hope?  I did eye exams there when I worked for the public health service and saw a polar bear in the window of the clinic one night after everyone had gone home for the day!  My heart was pounding like crazy!    I ran a little in my town of Kotzebue when it wasn't covered in snow and ice (2 months out of the year!) but there weren't many cars on the roads up there, mostly snowmobiles and four wheelers.

From our breakfast yesterday.  Funny, probably the most triathletes in the same place at the same time that didn't talk about racing/training at all.  We had a great time.

Pretty funny, while we were eating Erica said something about being in school and our 4 year old daughter said "you're in school?  I thought you were an adult?"

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Here is my day:

Went for a run at 7 AM.

Came home to bagels, the Sunday paper and cards from my wife and kids.

My wife took the kids to sunday school, came back and off we went. Turns out she took us to a Yoga teacher's house for a private Yoga lesson (its in my logs!)

My in-laws pickeed up the kids and they were all home by the time we got back. Played de Blob 2 on the Wii (Go buy this game and de Blob 1!) My 12 year old daugther then made me a chocolate pudding pie!

My wife then took me to a great dinner at 18 Seaboard. It was a terrific meal. Even had two glasses of Merlot. Had lots of calls from friends and family throughout the day. The last one is from an old friend from college. They just bought a summer house in Indian Harbor Beach, Florida. He offered it to us anytime. So In eed to find a triathlon in that area!

Hi gang - had a very nice breakfast this morning w/ Erica and Christina (along w/ her family).  Everyone was super nice and Christina has adorable kids.  My kids approved of Erica.  My daughter even asked me on the way home if Erica could be her mommy.  My kids love me so much!!!!!

Always great to me fellow MGers.  Can't wait for Rev3.

Hahaha!  Sam, I LOVED Gabriella.  She was a total sweetheart.  I think I had her fooled because she is the first kid that has ever liked me!

This was the exact convo:

G: "Can you come live with us?" E: "No, I have to go to school tomorrow." G:"Grown-ups don't go to school." E:"Well, I still do!" G: "Oh....I thought you were a grown-up..."  Laughing

I had a lot of fun, too!  Glad we got to meet up!

We finally got home last night after a $100 cab ride to Baltimore!  It was the most exhausting day ever, and the second I got home last night at 9:30pm, I passed out and didn't wake up 'til 7:30 this morning.  It was WONDERFUL!

Wow! Pt. Hope is way out there! Did you live there year-round? I was only there during bug season. I was much more inland, at Toolik Lake. It's remote, but since it's right near the pipeline haul road you can get there by car. We didn't have polar bears, but sometimes brown bears came through camp and I saw a wolf once from the mess hall window. Amazing sight.

Great photo -- looks like fun. I always loves me a good breakfast out with friend!! And yeah, too bad you missed the Iron Order meeting.

Tracy, so sorry about your tummy. As Julia said, long run nutrition is so tricky. Have you tried bloks/chomps? I've had good luck with those (cannot stomach gels). Liquid nutrition works too (carbo pro, Infinit, or your Heed). Hang in there and good job!!!

Happy Monday to all and to all a great day!!! (I can say that as my arse-kicking bike intervals are done for the week, ahhhhhhhhhhhh.)

I've had those days where you just can't seem to get the calories in you need to run.  5 gels in 2 hrs seems like an awful lot.  I wouldn't chalk it up to the gels themselves, only the fact it sounds like you took too many at one time.

Doug--your wife is a gem!  It sounds like you had a great 50th!

Tracy-I've been thinking about your nutritional issue.  When you said you bonked, does that mean you feel you totally depleted your glycogen stores? or you were sick to your stomach?  Kind of perplexed how you could bonk in that amount of time and am wondering if maybe you are still recovering from being sick a while ago????
