The official results are not posted yet, but unofficially I placed 63/416 and 3rd in my age group with a time of 1:109:37. The run hurt as I got a side-stitch and had to walk a bit. Probably cost me a couple of minutes, which translates to about 20 places. Still my son is wearing my medal right now. I'll let Linda announce her results. (Hint: she did great!) Doug Awesome Doug. way to go. It's a great feeling to finish a rce isn't it. |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! Havin'Fun - 2009-06-28 3:04 PM Back from my race (sprint) this morning. First, I have to give a big thanks to Doug for "encouraging" me to sign up. This race was my very first tri last year, and I only decided to do it to see where I stood compared to last year....that and Doug kept "suggesting" that I sign up. I am happy with my race....for 5 reasons: 1) I beat my time by .13 seconds. Hey a PR is a PR. I'll do a RR once the results are posted. 2) I passed 7 people on the bike and only got passed by 2 - probably the most exciting part of the race for me :-) 3) The run course was changed from last year......much harder today! Hills! 4) I have been focusing on going long so a sprint was not really on my radar, and 5) I took 2nd in my AG! It was really cool hanging out with Doug waiting for the awards.....as we both represented this group on the podium :-) Way to go Doug!!! Thanks to everyone for the inspires. Toooootally awesome Linda. What a great weekend for the grooup. |

The Smile Train Tri raises $ for children with cleft palates all around the world. My son Jake came with me the saturday afternoon to pick up my packet. One of the volunteers was a young man who had had cleft palate surgery. Jake said nothing as we went by, but as we left he asked me what was up with the boy's lip. I was so proud he did not say that in front of the young man. I explained what the triathlon was for and what cleft palates were. The packet had information about. loved that my son had consideration for another child, that he did not make the boy self-concious, and I told him it was a good question. I will probably remember that encounter long after the memories of the tri itself fade. Doug |

It's great when as a parent, you see how compassionate your kids are in the little things they do (or don't do) Nice job. Linda! awesome job out there! You are a swimming machine to be reckoned with! I really do feel like we are a team...it is an amazing feeling to have people you have never met (in person) rooting and pulling for you and to know that out on the course or even in training is such a huge boost. I heart SwbkrunMG oh and btw, thanks suzy, i didn't know that i actually did a "double brick" or there was such a thing until you posted your inspire...I had thought of my bike/run/bike/run as an improvisation to an intended brick (my girl Ripley was dying to go out about halfway into my 3 hour trainer ride) I didn't realize it at the time, but wow...running on tired legs twice was really good for me! |

Veteran 268 Kauai girl now in MIll Creek/Silver Firs | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! Well, I must have the Tri bug because my first race was yesterday and I woke up this morning thinking about strategy and training for the next one. It's funny because I woke up in the middle of the night last night and said "there is no possible way I did the swim in under 6 minutes" (like the posted results said). Sure enough, we got updated results this morning and they hadn't added the 4 minutes wave difference into our results. So, I still had 2nd in my division but actually did the swim in 9 minutes. Honestly, I feel better about that result because it reflects what my body was telling me during the swim. I do have a question about training. I am starting a new BT training plan and am thinking about using an Oly plan even through I only have sprints for the rest of the summer (and the swim portion of an Oly relay team). When I used the Sprint training plan, I was always going longer than the suggested workouts. Is there a downside to using an Oly plan if I am just racing Sprints? Oh yeah..new avatar since I actually have a picture of me in a race now Edited by KauaiShan 2009-06-28 10:32 PM |

Oh yeah..new avatar since I actually have a picture of me in a race now Hey Shannon Love the new avatar. You are one of the few people I have seen that actually look good in a swimming cap! I see no reason why you couldn't use the Oly plan if the training is not too taxing for you and you have the time. Who knows, maybe you will even up your last sprint of the season to a Oly just to test yourself out. Give it a whirl! Suzy |

Oh yeah..new avatar since I actually have a picture of me in a race now Like the new Avatar! Shannon, that's what I do with my plans, I usually pick one that will be much harder than any race I am going to be doing, makes the shorter distances seem even shorter. Maybe feeling a bit better about my swim yesterday 1000M swim and I came out of the water and looked at my watch and it said 22 mins. I did start out in the middle of the pack and that was interesting, I spent the whole way to the first buoy with my feet about a foot under water from all the people hitting them, kicked in the face by a breast stroker, etc, went wide to the turn buoy. Figured that was what caused me to be slower but now seeing a lot of people were surprised by their slower than expected times so maybe course was long. That's what I am going with ; ) BTW water was 84 degrees. Edited by dalessit 2009-06-29 7:29 AM |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! Anyone up yet? Looking for some help from someone more knowledgable about these wheels. Very good price on Specialized tri-spoke on e-bay, Specialized sold the design to HED a long time ago so these wheels have obviously been around the block a few times but since they are carbon tri-spokes they don't go out of true unless they started there. See any reason why I shouldn't get it? I would prefer a 50MM wheel so I could share it with my road bike but for the price it is currently going for <200 bucks right now I think it might be worth it. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!! Shannon, beautiful avatar. What a great smile! I like the idea of going long on the training plan. This way you can push yourself on the distances and be supper confident on race day. Way to stay strong! Tony, the price is certainly good - thus far. Things tend to jump quite a bit at the end on e-bay. I trust the HED brand. How old are the wheels? Are they clinchers or tubulars? Are they race only wheels or can you train/race on them - i.e. leave them on your bike all the time? I hope John is enjoying some well earned sleep this morning. I saw on the news that pretty much the entire state of Tx was experiencing a heat wave and no part of the state is under 100 degrees. Amazing. Guess I'll stop complaining about running in 95 degrees now! I think an appropriate challenge for John is next time he has to race in cowboy boots. Apparently doing a straight half in 100+ degree heat in the canyons is too easy |

See any reason why I shouldn't get it? I would prefer a 50MM wheel so I could share it with my road bike but for the price it is currently going for <200 bucks right now I think it might be worth it. Hi there, These are pretty nice wheels. A friend of mine runs these on his Kestrel and likes them a lot. As you mentioned, they're never going to go out of true. Obviously, if it has been mistreated, it'll have some hop to it, but really, it should be rather bombproof. Lance and the Posties ran these for a number of years at the TdF. For ~$200, that's a very decent price. I don't know how much of an aero weenie you are, but there are a few studies that show a negative interaction between these wheels and certain forks based on the airflow over the blades of the wheel: something about the way the air gets "squeezed" (um, clearly that's the technical term...) as the wheel passes through the fork. But I think you're talking fractions of a second over 40k. I'd throw down on it if you can get it for that price! ADDITION: Tracy brings up good points: I'm assuming this is a clincher, yes? I find it difficult to recommend tubulars to any triathletes. Yes they're lighter, but they're also far more expensive to change a flat, require more skill to mount, and tend to have (very slightly) worse rolling resistance. Tubulars are great for the TdF when you have a support car to quickly swap them out, but otherwise... just watching Normann's meltdown at Kona 2005 ("another flaht fookin tie-yar!") shows that in order to get that nice RR, you need to really glue those suckers down, and that makes them difficult to remove. All in all, unless you've got a nice tire sponsor to give you new $85 tires for your occasional flat, I'd roll with clinchers. If you want to save some more watts, run latex tubes rather than butyl... send me an email if you'd like more thoughts on that... SECOND ADDITION:...LOL, not worth double the price! Oh yeah clinchers all the way for me, Tubulars might be faster if they are glued properly but gluing it properly makes it very difficult to remove. Glad they went for 2x the price, since I was looking for a wheel that could be used on both bikes. Agree on the latex tubes, run them all the time. Also, signing up for my first road race next Wednesday. Well it's a practice race anyways. Volunteering at our race this weekend really made me want to get out and try it. They run them every Wednesday, it's a "practice" race but when you put a group of guys out there, race is race. Main thing for me is it's not a technical course so less things to worry about. http://www.route1velo.com/GreenbeltInfo.asp |
