Overall Rank = 10/152
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/27
Pre-race routine:

Got to bed at 11:00 pm, so the 4:00am alarm came mighty early.
Had laid everything out last night, so I packed everything up, showered, grabbed some cereal and made a pb&j for the road, loaded the car and headed out.
Event warmup:

Road my bike 1/3 mile from the parking lot to the race site. Swam about a 150 just to warm up & get my head into it.
Swim
  • 03m 51s
  • 250 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was worried about the swim seeding. Last year I was #6, this year #34 (I submitted vitually the same time). So either there was some mis-seeding or some really fast kids. There was some mis-seedind, but it ended up not being a problem. We started 10 sec apart (last year it was 5) and that gave us a little more room between folks. I passed three folks...only one proved to be a problem getting around since we were at the end of the lane. Overall it went better than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

I have not focused on any speed work this year.....this year is all about going long. So, if I do this one next year I would need to do some speed work.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

T1 went ok. Not great, but better than T2 (see below). I can never seem to "get in a hurry" in transitions. WTH
What would you do differently?:

Hurry a little :-)
Bike
  • 39m 18s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought the bike was better than the results showed. It felt good, but for some reason I decided against the watch or computer for the bike. Not sure why??? Anyway, I was happy...I passed 7 folks on the bike and only 2 passed me :-)
What would you do differently?:

Just need to keep riding, and for this race do some speed work. Again, no focus on sprints this year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

What the heck was I doing here? Obviously just hanging out!
I could not get my balance to change shoes so I just sat down. I didn't think I hung out too long.....but the results prove differently (116th in T2) Guess I found my comfort zone - T2. HA!
What would you do differently?:

Hurry & move faster. Do not sit down.
Run
  • 24m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

The run course was different from last year. Hill after hill after hill. In my opinion it was a tough course. I like the challenge, but it was tough. I was hot and needed something to drink so at the first aid station I took a Gatorade and a water. I threw the water on my body and took one huge gulp of Gatorade. Oh My Gosh, it was not Gatorade. It tasted like a vitamin powder with a few drops of water added. Man, I ran with that taste in my mouth the rest of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Train for a sprint. Pick up the pace a little. It was slower than last year, but the course was much harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, cheered for Doug (fellow SWBKRUN MG friend - nice guy), ate, and just relaxed.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This year is all about going long, so I have not focused on the sprint.

Event comments:

This was the 2nd year for the SmileTrain tri. I was concerned that the race grew quite a bit compared to last year, but they handled the numbers well. I also think the run change was good, it was really more of a challenge. I think this year (even though it was much larger) was much better than last year. My hats off to Rebecca, she has done an awesome job. And the race raised $25k for the SmileTrain charity....sweet!

For someone who claims to be weak on the bike you sure were smokin' out there. You're not allowed to be super fast in ALL THREE events - that's not fair!!!!

Great job out there!!!

Good grief -  for someone saying they weren't fast, you pretty much blazed every sport - super fast swim, nice bike, under 8 min/mile run...  Very nice!

Try not drinking beer till 11 and you might do a little better.

Its really going to be fun watching you when you actually train for this distance.

AWESOME JOB!!!!
