Master 6595![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by Asalzwed So, I am walking like Lucille Bluth on New Years. The hike I did on Saturday was, without question, the hardest thing I have done in a long time. I'm not sure if it was that you gain 4,100 ft in about 2.5 miles, the fact that I had done a challenging track workout beforehand, not being used to any weight-bearing exercise or the fact that we went VERY quickly. I had no idea how hard 35 lbs would be. Anyway, I was ready to hack down the mailbox and throw it off a cliff when we got to the top. Luckily we had the foresight to bring beers with us, so I drank that and my anger subsided. Then I though, "OK the hard part is out of the way. We can just fly down the mountain now that it's all downhill." WRONG! Going down was almost MORE difficult. I think the DOMS had already set in and with each sketchy step down I felt like my quads were just going to give out. Anyway, I survived, and despite all my b*tching, it was really beautiful.
Oh yeah, my shoes gave me such bad blisters I left them in the mailbox at the top and wore my running shoes back down (luckily I had brought them in my bag as "extra weight")
This photo (not mine) shows the terrain
Then at the top it's like this:
I was thinking of you and your climb this weekend. That sounds TOUGH! I agree that downhill is almost as much work. We have a similar climb here and I think the downhill leaves me more sore. |

The angry face on the mailbox says it all! It does look like a beautiful spot - and I bet even better with a beer. Have you ever heard of the Grouse Grind in North Vancouver? http://www.grousemountain.com/grousegrind The best part is that after climbing all the way up to the top, it's actually just the base of where the chair lifts are for skiing in the winter... but there's a $5 gondola to take you down. HA! So, I've taken that Gondola up AND down. Does that count? Hmmm... I'll have to consult the judges on this one. *some time elapses while various judges consult - the French judge has been kicked out due to saying baguette to many times* Judges have come back to say that in terms of hiking, no it doesn't count - but if you had a beer at the top of the mountain, then all is forgiven and no penalties will be assessed against you. |

LOVE the Arrested Development reference, that show cracks me up! I've been working my way through all the old seasons starting with the pilot and will eventually treat myself to the new ones. Felicia, I hope you enjoy the fitting, the week of kid free time, Austin, and whatever napping you may do. My words for the week come from Winston Churchill: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." I thought that the Pod name was swimming... Felicia admitted that in her family, napping is the word. I must admit, I have used that one as well. Ah! So we have "swimming," "napping," and "yoga." Gotcha! Yeah, any others???? HA!! I'm so glad someone pointed this out... my brain is seriously foggy this morning and my first thought was... Geez - how active ARE you during a na... ooooooh. It's THAT kind of "nap". From TAN I've only had it referred to as pizza. Master 9705![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Originally posted by melbo55 Hi manatees, and welcome Switch/Elesa, who will be known as Switch to me as well. Sorry I've been a bit AWOL lately, but my life is a bit crazy in many different ways and from many different directions. Boy, a lot happens in the pod when one falls something like 10 pages behind, and I hate not being able to comment on so much that could/should/would be commented on. Please accept my humble apologies. My craziness in a nutshell: a personal issue which has been going on since autumn will be reaching the pinnacle soon and will make my life extra challenging and stressful for a while but after 'the pinnacle' passes, things will improve a fair amount (sorry, a bit too personal to share in a public forum - very few of my closest friends even know). It's been quite the roller coaster ride. I have two Team Fight fundraising events happening in the next two weeks to which I've been devoting a lot of time and energy, wanting to get good results. Best friend is going through an upheaval/relocation/needing to find a new job. My sister is going through divorce which involves an upheaval/relocation and new living arrangements in PA rather than DE. So these are the reasons/excuses my training has been lax lately. I will try to do better, as workouts prove to be little islands of sanity. My sister likes to joke when I tell her I was running. She says, "What were you running from?" I reply, "Life, but it always seems to catch back up to me when I stop." Ha! We'll keep the good thoughts heading your way! |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)So, after that track workout on Saturday, I am very aware of how difficult the 3K is going to be. I seriously think that something I need to work on is having a bit more of a competitive attitude and pushing myself a little harder. If that hike was any kind of indicator on what kind of pain I can tolerate when forced to. Anyway, one of my teammates is also running the 3K. She is more experienced than me and races a touch faster than I, and trains MUCH faster than I do (if that makes sense.) She said she thinks I am capable of keeping up with her in the 3K. She was planning on running it faster than I was. But her comments have me thinking maybe I should just tuck in behind her and try and hang on and push myself way out of my comfort zone. I mean, it's a 3K and means nothing other than it's something new I want to try. So who cares if I "fail"? |

Holy ish, no one ever gets my Arrested Development quotes/references! Any hop-ons? And uphill makes you tired, downhill makes it hurt. You need the power to push yourself up the hill, but it's the absorbing that makes the soreness. Difference between getting tired in running vs cycling. And going downhill has a lot more absorbing. And it's very glorious, flying-free, running like the wind pain. Of course you can push yourself. At that point it's gonna hurt like fork whether you keep your pace or push it beyond, so you may as well kill yourself ... even unbearable pain is bearable for a few minutes. The only caution in shorter races (3K isn't even quite that short, though) is if you cramp up because you're too far past your fitness level, stop. It's not a big risk, but enough of a risk to be a precursor to pulling something. |

We're in San Antonio this evening. I have my Retul bike fitting tomorrow morning. I got my jogo in this evening. For a while today, I thought I was going to have to log my "nap." I hope to be busy in Austin this week riding, doing a little running, going to museums, shopping, and maybe taking in a movie or two that my husband would rather not suffer through. ("Great Gatsby," I hear you calling my name, if only you are still playing somewhere.) "Have to"??? I say just add it in! Sounds like a great week of relaxing and enjoying some no kids time. Enjoy every second! DH keeps talking about a trip to Austin, so I'm really looking forward to my first time going...someday. I'm seriously going to start adding any "nap" to my work out log - I guess that would go under the tab of "sport"? DH and I keep talking about moving to Austin in a couple of years... maybe. Depends on if he would be able to get a transfer with his job as the last one wasn't the best situation. Regardless, I think a trip to Austin is going to be on the books for next year to go check it out! |
