Hello!

I've been lurking, nursing a bit of a solo pity party.  Busy time of year for kiddos - TWO graduating in May - HS sports - taxes - hubby traveling for work -  yadayadayada.  My RA is flaring a bit, and I'm trying some new meds while trying to not scale back my training.  Ankle and knee still not 100%, so I'm trying to figure out how much is just getting over injury pain, and how much is RA.  Tough call with multiple docs involved, especially since I'm trying to avoid the dreaded 'take some time off' speech.

I train with others probably more than I should, but I love it.  I usually ride with a group of women on Wednesdays, and with either my tri club, hubby and/or friends (also doing IMAZ) on Saturdays.  Running is usually solo, but I get in a run with my IMAZ buddy whenever possible - that's good, 'cuz she's way faster than I am, and she pushes me.  If Jeff's in town, we swim together, otherwise I'm on my own for that - write my own sets.

I'm lucky - our closest friends for 20+ years are doing IMAZ with us, so we're all enjoying this!

Enjoying the posts.....sending good vibes everyone's way!!

Not racing until Big Sur on May 1.

Just saw about the earthquake and tsunami. Hopefully our buds over there are OK. It's hard to believe that water can cause so much damage. I saw one shot where a car was driving along a road and the tsumani was catching up to it. Hope they were able to keep ahead of it.
Training: I train both with other people and alone. Most of the time with others as I am a coach for our triahtlon club and have to be there for most of the workouts. I am also training with a young lady. When these people are not available like last night because of all the rain I train alone.
Off season: I hope my strength training will pay off this year with better results.
Kids are grown and moved out so we only have to worry about little ones when babysitting and then my wife is usually watching them. She's not into athletics. Sounds like you're getting ready for Vegas, John, if you're doing treadmill in the dark.

Very scary. I just heard on the radio that there's a lot of damage in Sendai, where Dan lives. I hope you're okay, Dan. Thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

I think Tuffli lives in Singapore.

Prayers for all affected by the quake/ tsunami in Japan.  Dan, I hope you and your wife are okay.  Lots of damage and fatalities there in Sendai...apparently right at the epicenter.

My friends in Hawaii are starting to breathe a bit easier.  Sounds like so far the waves are not too bad in Oahu at least...but it can build in speed and intensity.  We have a EQ readiness kit, but live about 3 miles from the ocean, which the warning center considers higher ground.  But the beaches are all closed down.  Evacuations for coastal homes are still voluntary.  It's not supposed to reach here until 8:00.

Prayers to Japan...and up the coast to Kim.  We're about 20 miles in from the beach, and at 500 feet of elevation.  If we go, the state of California really HAS broken off and formed an island.

Any word from Dan?

Thinking about you and your family Dan...hope you are OK.

My brother lives on a small research island just off of Ohau and apparently is doing OK.  Was up all night with the sirens and boating people from the island to mainland Ohau but thinks things will be OK.

I have a lot of collegues currently traveling/living/working in Japan with offices in Tokoyo and maufuacturng plants elsewhere.  Initial communications is that everyone is safe.

Hopefully you west coasters see no impact other than some tense times over the next few hours.

G

How many of you train with someone else or in a group and how many times or just go solo

Myself there is not a lot of people where I live that bike, swim, or run (but the running % is going up). So I have probably train 99% of the time by myself. Though yesterday I was able to run with someone and that was a refreshing relief seemed to put an extra step in my run.

I'm a mostly solo gal. My schedule is so restricted (trying to do everything I can when it doesn't affect the family) that I need to do a workout, be done, and move on. And because I am following a training plan for my IM, I have specific things I want to do each time I head on out. That said, I have some friends I love to run or bike with, so often I'll let them know what I'm doing and if they can join me for some or part, awesome!! It does help break up the monotony. But I figure I race alone, so training alone is fine... it's a treat when I get to do a social workout!

This week has been tough just mentally tired of training by myself, so when a friend called me up a few days ago to go run I jumped on that talk about a relief and it was a lot of fun took some stress off . tonight my son did a short and easy ride. After that I feel so much more refreshed and ready to go for my HIM in about a week.

Hang in there.  That is why they say taper sucks.  Glad you got a mental break.  Stay strong and well rested.  You are going to kick butt next Sunday!!!!

Oh gosh, we were watching breaking earthquake news last night -- how devastating. Was just looking at photos with the kids, so horrible. Dan, our thoughts are with you and I can't imagine what you are enduring right now. I hope you can get us word that you are OK.

Taking a moment to count our blessings here...

My eldest is on a cruise ship - supposed to be in port this morning at 6:00 - and is moored somewhere off the coast of San Diego.  They've closed the port, and advised that it's safest to keep them in deeper water.  She's got intermittent cell coverage, and I've talked to her several times.  She's with 11 of her sorority friends - what a way to end spring break.  I'm sure that they're safe, but pretty darned stressed.  I got the "I want to come HOME" call......

here's a tip you may find handy.

the top of your water bottle should screw on.  if you don't do this and try to drink out of it you might get wet.  further,  i you do this while underway and its cold and windy and you get wet, it can suck.   but it is a good opportunity to laugh at yourself.

hope you find this helpful.

Thanks for the great tip!

Next time let me suggest you try it with your electrolyte drink, instead of just water, so you can be nice and sticky the entire ride...Laughing

Update:  Bethany's ship docked, they let everyone off, and she's on her way home - 6 or 7 hours drive.  Big sigh of relief here.....still saying prayers for the rest of the people waiting for news.

BTW, if you're watching the news, they're showing pictures of the Santa Cruz harbor - that's our closest beach, 30 minutes or so from here.  Did an oly there in September.

Oh, phew. That's one thing I've been worried about that I can cross off the list. Thanks for letting us know, Linda!

4 people swept away off a beach in Oregon this morning. Haven't watched local news to see how things were in Seattle -- I know there were warnings but not much seemed to be happening, thankfully.

I sincerely hope everybody in the quake regions is okay!  I've been thinking about our MG buddies and other friends all day.  My good friend in Hawaii says she's totally fine and didn't get too many waves.  Lots of prayers going out there.

John - Thanks for the tip!  I've heard that's helpful, but glad I know for sure now!

If I hadn't already planned the doctor's appointment today, I definitely would have after my swim today.  My knee was killing me in the pool.  Anyway, the doctor couldn't get me in until 4:45pm, so by the time I got out with a referral for an orthopedic doctor, it was too late to try and make an appointment.  So, it'll have to wait 'til Monday to try to make an appointment.  Ugh.  He gave me two possible options it could be: patello-femoral syndrome or chrondromalacia patella.  Still looking those up, but he basically said he thinks my knee isn't tracking right.  I'm lucky that I got a doctor who used to be a marathoner, so he at least knew what he was talking about.  He said for now, I can run if I think it's not hurting too bad.  I think I'll bag my run for today and Sunday to see if I can get in Monday.  I hate injuries.  A lot.
