People. People.  People... we have Ironman Perform developed by the sports nutritionist experts at Powerbar.  This course is going to feel the salt flats in Utah.

lol!

So, I got my drinks today! Hooray! (I live on the 5th floor of a walkup--FedEx dude, showing very little HTFU-ness, left the case with the building manager in Apt. 2--so I got to schlep it up the stairs by myself. I felt so proud carrying a case of something that said IRONMAN on it. Also, wondering if I should log all that as part of my training...?)

PennState - 2010-06-03 2:10 PM Gee all this talk of the alternate route on the bike is at least distracting us from the swim melee fiasco discussion

They don't send us out in AG Waves?

Ah yes, but will these new products fit securely in our bottle cages?? I was thinking of starting out riding with one maybe two empty bottle cages in the rear and just fluid in my aero bottle. That way I won't have to pull any extra weight up the climb out of town and maybe I can just put bottle of new Ironman Perform in at each aid station. Sound sane?
Actually this brings up a great discussion point. I think it is a silly move to load up your bike with 3-4 full bottles of liquid on your bike. It adds sig weight and there is some climbing at the start of the bike. Personally I go with 2 bottles total. One in the aerobars and one on the frame. There are multiple areas on the course to re-load and it doesn't make sensr to carry so much extra weight.

This is my approach as well. My bike weighs a ton with all those bottles so for IMWI I filled my aero and one on the cage and drank only from the aero, I just filled it as I ran out. Honestly there were so many aid stations that I barely needed the second bottle, but I do it just in case. You never know.

Speaking of bottles, my powerbar drinks are here! I'll be testing them out tomorrow. The timing is amazing, I left my GE powder with my BF so I had no fluids for tomorrow!

I'm actually debating just going with the aerobar setup for LP this year and removing the frame cage.

I felt like the aid stations were coming up so quickly that I never got through that whole bottle. I'm also drinking a little less per hour this season so I'm thinking the same. If there's one thing you can be sure of on a WTC IM course it's plentiful aid stations. Now some of the HIMs are a different story!

About every 10 miles. There is 5 on the bike course and you will see each one twice.

Just to make you all Jealous, I got TWO cases of my samples.  Of course one of them cost us $400+.  Sadly, the Mrs. had to pull out as she is injured, so they sent her a case for me to have.

You guys have talked a lot about gear selection for the race.

Someone posted this article in another thread but I thought you might like to read it as I found it one of the best articles that explains gearing needed for tough IM bike course based on your ability (he uses power).

He really sums up why IMLP and other courses ares challenging course for folks with lower power/weight ratios.

His conclusion in gearing:

In my opinion, it’s not until the athlete hits an FTP of 4w/kg that "regular gearing" becomes even worthy of consideration. Even then, a 50/34 at 90rpm will get an athlete to 34mph. The question needs to be asked, should the athlete even need to pedal at speeds faster than this?

For those of you not training with power, not many here on BT have 4 or greater FTP/weight ratio.

Just paid for my spot in IM Australia 2011.  It's sold out but there was at least 1 international participant entry left.   This having to plan a year in advance is kind of a pain in the butt.  Can't wait to get back home where there are all those branded and non branded 140.6 races.

Now back to stressing about LP.

I wish I had nutrition show up at my door.  I'm running low on Infinit and my latest order has not arrived.  Next week's long ride will be interesting for sure.
