OK! Who is doing Muskoka this year?

This is my 'A' race this year... Was my first (only) 70.3, my bar is set pretty low... I cant wait to hammer it out on the hills again this fall!

I haven't committed yet - but have it in my head as the one race I really want to do this year.  Keep having reasons to go back and correct what didn't go right the year before!

2013 is my first year of 70.3's!  I've signed up for both Muskoka and Steelhead!  It's going to be a busy summer!

TriMuskoka ... an athletes "trip advisor" when training, racing, or simply relaxing in Huntsville....

I am not sure if people are aware of our organization, TriMuskoka (www.trimuskoka.com) acts as a local "trip advisor" and endurance sport tourism body to help athletes and their supporters that come to our community find everything that they need to make their stay here as easy and seamless as it can be.

We also act as a resource for your visits to Huntsville to train for the big day.  We have alternate training routes should you want to check them out for different scenery, as well as options of where (and when) safe open water swimming can be done without having to worry about boats.

You shouldn't have to worry about all the details of travel, just how you are going to perform on race day.

So, please visit our site for any and all information you need about the race, and please contact us with any questions.

If you are planning on coming to do the 5150 or 70.3, consider coming to the Muskoka TriSummit in May featuring Joe Friel and 11 other professional athletes and coaches.  All the details are on our website's main page.

Looking forward to seeing you up here!

This will be my first 70.3. Looking forward to the challenge of the hills and the day.

Deerhurst was booked so had to book at Hidden Valley. Is the proximity close enough to the race venue? Hoping the family can walk down race morning.

I'll tell you on Monday. I'm heading to Huntsville tomorrow for the 5150 and I'll stay at Hidden Valley. I was also thinking on staying there for the 70.3 so this will be the test.

Hey there....looks like you have some experience at Muskoka. My current race wheels have a 11-23 cassette - thinking I may need more options like at 11-28. Any thoughts on cassette choice? Thanks......

How strong a cyclist are you - I can't see your logs. Personally, I would not run an 11-23 on this course. First time I raced it I rode a 53/39 up front and 12-27 on the back. Next time out I switched my crank to a 50/34 compact. Last time, I was on a different bike but rode compact up front and 11-26 in the back. Either of the last combinations worked well for me (I raced at about 3watts/kg on the day). If you are running a standard crank up front, then an 11-28 is not an unreasonable choice (again, I don't know what kind of rider you are).

Just keep in mind that the toughest hills are at the beginning and the end. After km 60 there are some nasty. shorter hills. This race really does start at that point, and you'll want your legs to survive for the run.

Thanks....logs only on Garmin Connect currently.

Decent cyclist I guess considering race results but....flatlands of Ontario where I use my 11-23 on my race set-up. Training wheel is 11-25. Not much hill experience at all. Plan to get up there in Aug sometime for recon.

I have standard crank, just ordered 11-28. First HIM as well so need to be cautious with the bike and not overkill it.

Hidden Valley is as close as you can get if you can't be at Deerhurst.  I haven't done the walk but it is just around the bend from Deerhurst ... easy to ride your bike over at the very least.

Sorry for the delay in my answer. The distance from HV to DH is 1.2km. The location seem very convenient and your family can relax at the beach or the swimming pool while you pedal around Lake of Bays.
The rooms at HV and most of the facilities look old and not very well maintain. I guess that the hotel was built 30 years ago and they haven't put much care into it. Weeds growing around the interlocking of the outdoor pool and tennis courts, worn out carpets...Now the views of the lake from the deck and from some rooms are awesome, and the beach and the lake compensates for the lack of investments. We stayed on the 1st floor and it was somewhat noisy. Didn't eat at the restaurant so no comments on that. Room was clean.
We did stay at Holiday Inn and Best Western in previous editions and the rooms were better but the commute longer and we didn't have access to the beach.
Hope this helps.

I was up at deerhust last summer for a mini vacation with girlfriends. went for a run over to hidden valley (and beyond) the distance to hidden valley is fairly short and definitely walkable, but there are some pretty big hills between the two (I think one big down to the lake level and then a big up on the other side back over to deerhurst. Depending on the age of your kids, they might complain.

Can't speak to the accomodations.

Thanks for the feedback. I thnk the proximity makes it a no brainier for me. Should have secured Deerhurst earlier but this will work.

Run about 4km off the bike when you're done. That way you know what you're in for at the start and end of the race course - cause that part of the run is not easy.

I did just that. Ran from the parking lot to the Cookson Bay Cres loop and back.

Man the bike course is tough. Especially coming from the flatlands of SW Ontario. I wasn't pushing it, but didn't just spin it either and only averaged 29.5km/hr. That last climb on N Portage road really finishes it off for you!

I ran a middle section on Thursday night when I got in town. That first section on Canal / Deerhurst Rd is most certainly tougher.

The 12-28 on the rear was good but I think a compact up front too would be better.

I think I am in for next year but with a three month old, I'll be holding off on registration for a bit!

I'm in! I'm doing Milton and Mont-Tremblant 70.3 in June, then Muskoka.

Life didn't allow me to race this one last year, but I'm in for 2014.

I guess I'm not the only one. I was signed up for Mont-Tremblant 70.3 and full and was unable to do either due to severe anemia that I didn't recognize until it was too late. Epic fail on my part.

I was surprised to see that Deerhurst is already booked up for the race. I guess Hidden Valley is the next best thing, so I got my booking in now. I'll keep checking Deerhurst over the next while to see if anything opens up because I'd definitely prefer to stay there.

Really???  Wow, I would not have expected it to be full so fast.  Last year I expected the race to draw so many more people because of the WC in Tremblant next year, but I had guessed that the 2014 race would be a lower number of entrants.
