rc63413 - 2008-06-12 1:59 PM Still may ride 34 (group training ride) tonight if it fits in - I will be traveling next week and will likely not get much in less the hotels have good cycles. This week Swim 5350 ~ (23050 total/20000 goal) = 115% Bike 47.8 ~ (201/250) = 81% Run 37.6 ~ (88.1/150) = 59% Obviously my eyes were bigger than my belly when making the goals. I think the 3 week goal really helped with motivation, thanks Dave for the idea. Lots of family activities etc make it difficult to get a nice routine/schedule. I am starting to get a little better grasp of my schedule or a routine that will work for my family and me. Tom, it is hard to come much closer to goal than you did. Great job!

I see why I was thinking you probably kept up your schedule the best.  Huge running volume the past week.  (huge for me).  50 miles a week for 3 straight weeks sounds enourmous to me.  Congrats on getting as much as you did.

Also good volume in swimming and riding.

By my estimates you have the most volume in Swimming and Running.  Justin may have matched you in cycling (Justin ties you at an average riding speed of 19.77 mph).

OK David, your the only one left that can top Greg's total volume or my total percentage.

Good job everyone for any work we all did that would not have been done if not for the 21 day challenge.  I know I picked up my volume because of the challenge.

here are the sad totals:

swim, 24,127 yrds, 80%
Bike: 12.5 hours, 48%
Run: 37.8 miles, 47%

not great but due to race recovery and injury i am happy with it, and my swim got a good solid focus,

now lets bring on the next two weeks

Alright... Tom and I are racing this weekend.

Here are my predictions for the race. We will see if it happens or not

~800 yrd swim: 13:00 (or about 1:40/100yrd)
T1: 1:30
17.2 mi bike: 50:00 (or about 20.5mph)
T2: 1:00
5k run: 22:00 (or about 7min/mi)

Total: 1:26:30

What do you think? I think it is within my training ranges.

Based on my past marathon training I was way optimistic about the amount of running I could possibly do while training the other two sports. I think 30-40 is doable, but for me no way beyond that. I may periodically be able to pop up there if I get a good long run in, but not routinely.

Of course higher volume is only good if it translates to better performance. If I start to progress without injury then that will the tell the tale. I can say, I have hit a string of 100+ mile weeks with running and my body does not feel nearly beat up like then, although general tiredness is similar.

After last weekends OWS swimming debacle, I am kind of yearning to try again.

i think you can hit that, that course is not hard at all, for what its worth i have had some of my fastest splits on the diff courses around alum

best olympic was out there last season (low 20s on the swim, 24,7 on the bike, 6:33s on the run).

good luck this weekend, i may come over if i am around,

I agree that it is not a hard course... but I still do not have the engine to push a 24mph average. I am still happy with anything over 19. I definately think that I can average a 20mph average on the ride. The biggest gain from my last race on the course will be in transition (seriously the last time I raced T1 was over 3min) and what speed I can squeak out.

I would love to pound out something quicker... we will just see how things go.

haha yeah T1 and 2 are good places to drop time;-)

sorry if they came out the wrong way, i didnt mean you should hit those times, more that was a good course for me, should have included some others for ref (i was going about a mph slower and 30 sec per mile on the bike/run at the same time for other races.)

if the weather is looking good i'll come out and cheer people on.

Based on David's statement that the course produces fast times, and my optimism that my current fatique troubles will pass I think this is what I am shooting for:

2 mile run: 14:40 (7:20 min/mi)
T1: 0:59
17.02 mi bike: 44:30 (or about 22.95mph)
T2: 0:50
5k run: 23:59 (or about 7:43min/mi)

Total: 1:25:00

I also think my streak of always finishing 1st or 2nd in my age group is in big jeopardy because of the size of this event.  I mostly just want to see improvement.

Back in September 2007, if you told me I would still be jerking around with 7:45 pace 5K runs I would have said you were crazy.  Its strange to me slowly my run times are dropping.  I expected to be under 7min/mile  by now.

Speaking from experience as a "masters" runner. The speed is the first thing to go and the hardest to get back. I can approximately hit the 15K times I did in high school, though I did not run many of those back then. I can not come close to my 5K times despite running a lot more and even doing speed work. I put on a lot of weight, both muscle and fat, relative to high school but can run 2-3 times as much and still not get there. I would imagine with longer events you will find you are stronger. No matter what, you have to run fast in order to run fast. Half mile to mile repeats where you run at a pace per mile that is 15 - 20 seconds faster than current 5K race pace is a great way to drop time. It helps to find others to run these with, but make certain you train for your pace not theirs. There is a very good website out there with a lot of information.

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/

The times will drop, just keep chipping away.

So you will pass me somewhere on the bike or in transition. If I make it to the run without seeing you I'll be in the clear

good luck guys, as i said this is a fast course, not fast like deleware fast but pretty close, and much more fun to ride/run if its the same as the other races over there.

both of you: remember nothing goes into transition that you dont need, leave the water on the bike and drink while you are riding, you may slow down atiny bit, but the time spent riding a bit slower is nothing compared to the time spent in T1 with water, same with gels, its a short race, nothing needed.

lets see some good times in T1 and 2 this weekend;-)

Depending on how things go (and who they start first, and IF your start has waves), there is an opportunity for a double pass.  I could pass you on the bike and you could pass again on the final run.

They start the corporate challenge people first... The DU start is usually a mass start right?

So we should be heading out at the same time.

~800 yrd swim: 13:00 (or about 1:40/100yrd)
T1: 1:30
17.2 mi bike: 50:00 (or about 20.5mph)
T2: 1:00
5k run: 22:00 (or about 7min/mi)

Total: 1:26:30

Well I did not hit my goals... I beat the bike goal... but did not hit the swim or run goal. I think I just pushed way too hard.

Swim: 16:10 (includes transition)
Bike: 48:53
Run: 25:07 (includes transition)

Total: 1:30:11

I did not stop my watch right at the end of the race but pretty close. Overall I am still very happy. I shaved almost 3-4min off of the previous record time on the course. It was a great day for racing... sunshine... mid to high 60s air and water temp.

Now it is time to go sit in the sun and try to work off some of this massive farmer tan that I have developed over the course of my training. Enjoy the weekend all... and Happy Father's Day to you Dads out there.

It was a nice day to race.  I had fun too.

Edit.  Justin and I were able to meet at the course.  Nice talking to you Justin.

Great race, guys! I haven't had time to read the race reports but I'll take a look over my lunch break...

Greg, I didn't forget your question, I was just out of town for the weekend. I upgraded my membership in order to get access to better plans that offer more guidance. I was originally on the free plan but as I stepped up my training and I wanted more detailed instructions and a more functionality from the site. And honestly, $60 or $70 was a drop in the bucket compared to what a coach would charge and although I probably could create my own plan it would take me hours and hours to plan out...and time is one thing I simply don't have in abundance.

Hope all is well, guys!

I've got my race report up.  Justing the overall times did not include the T2 time.  I added that to my race report time on my own.  I contacted UltraFit and PremierRaces to let them know.  There was one Award reversal in the Duatlon (1st and 2nd places).  I bet there are more award reversals in the Triathlon since you have more competitors and the times are closer to each other.

I was no where near my pre-race prediction.  One reason was my trouble I talked about in my race report, the other is the oddities in the course lengths the entire field ran the 2 miles and 5K runs slower than the other UltraFit 2mile and 5K courses.

I just spoke with Jeff Sheard from UltraFit. He assurred me that the T2 discrepancy is not part of the overall time.  In other words, the overall times are correct and the T2 was just counted twice, once in the T2 and once in the final run or bike time.

I don't know how he could know that for certain but I am sure that that will end up being the official final statement.

So, I'm gonna go back and fix my race report accordingly (use UltraFits overall time, and remove half of T2 time from the bike time and half from my run time).

So, any of you guys ever participate in an XTERRA event? I've got a friend who is doing one in July as his first ever triathlon. Aside from focusing on mountain biking vs. road biking and trail running vs. road running, are there any other major differences he should be prepared for? Do the transitions work pretty much the same? Is it common to wear tri shorts during the bike or do most people wear mtn bike specific shorts?

Thanks for any input guys. Hope everyone is doing well. I had one ride full of suckitude last night but made up for it with a great run this morning ;-)

How's everybody feeling this week?  You guys recovering well from your race?

I'm trying to gear up for the start of my marathon training by putting in a few extra miles.  We're supposed to be comfortable (definition: able to talk and run) running 10 miles by the start of training on 7/5.  I'm running 5 miles consistently at 8:30 without losing my breath so I figure if I train around a 9:00 minute pace for my longer runs I will be ok.   I am worried about overuse and fatigue though since I will still be training for tri's too through early September.  Something that once seemed a long ways off is now right around the corner and I'm feeling a little under-prepared.  The actual marathon is not until 10/26 but the training schedule is pretty rigorous.

Anybody else have apprehension going into the training for their first marathon?

Never participated in one but last months issue of Triathlete Magazine (still on the shelves I think) is devoted to XTERRA.  Has the 2007 champion (in tri shorts) on the cover.  Maybe you or he can grab a copy.  If it's not on the shelf anymore I can mail mine to you.
