good morning TAN!

where are my knee-pain-in-VA girls at?  i did something funky to my knee last night in hip hop class, and now i'm hating life.

That sucks. Hopefully you just strained something.  The VAMDDC area is apparently a bit hard on the knees.

well the workout schedule was chest and shoulders today so that was fine, swim tomorrow so that should be fine, leg workout friday.  we'll see if it goes away by then.  its prob nothing.  although i could barely sleep because of it...yikers.

Does you kneecap slide around more than usual now?

nope.  maybe less...

Hopefully just something swollen then.  Just remember

I'd BETTER have new shoes before the spring!!!! Then I can donate my "old" pair (the pair I retired when I bought the current ones that I've just been wearing around on errands).

Where do you donate those?  I know when I'm done with shoes the only place they're going is the trash...they're usually pretty well destroyed.

Many of the running stores around here have a bin to dump them in, inside the store. I have a running store across the street from my neighborhood, so I bring them there. I retire mine after 300 miles, but they're not so dead that some kid in Africa (or here in the US, not sure where this particular bin's contents go) couldn't get several months of (non-running) wear out of them. I could probably go longer than 300 miles since I don't weigh very much, but I also don't want to push it and end up with any more knee problems.

That's a neat sounding program.  I think mine would only be good for recycling into the foam they put under playground equipment, but if they went to a person who needed them, even better.

There are a lot of programs like this out there - if you google online, you could find some, I bet. Either way, recycling them in some capacity is good, I think. A recent issue of Runner's World (like November or December- it was their "Green Issue" had an article about various programs.

Same here, I just threw away my old pair that looked like the were already chopped up for playground use.  The progression of shoes is, Running, then working out/hiking/regular use, then trash

Yeah, running, regular use, hiking in mud/yard work, trash would generally be how mine go.  Except the 2nd to last pair of running shoes I bought, because they weren't the right shoes for me to run in they went straight to regular use.

I was wearing an old pair of running shoes last year when I stepped on a nail.  The doc at urgent care told me that I needed antibiotics b/c of a particularly nasty bacteria that has been known to grow in old running shoes...

I decided to risk it and not get the drugs... but it did make me consider using old running shoes for yardwork... at least around rusty nails.

If we're sharing, I wear the Mizuno Wave Riders I don't know much about the Brooks neutral shoes and if they are good or not. (I've now had three different running stores evaluate me and tell me I'm good in a neutral shoe) People seem to like their stability shoes. The Mizuno neutral shoe seems to be a popular one.

Not to overshare but I over-pronate.  I am a huge Brooks fan though.  I had previously been running in a New Balance stability, then moved to the Brooks Axiom - both of those irritated my legs/hips.  The Trances allow me to run forever without leg pain caused by the shoe.  I also like them bc they are not too heavy - it's hard to find good stability without it being an old grandma orthopaedic shoe weight, haha.

Do you like the Mizunos?   My friend Christa just got some from Roadrunner, the shoe dog matched her up.  I didn't know they made running shoes, I always thought of them as soccer for some reason.

Have you tried the Newtons?  I want to give them a shot, see if it's just all marketing.  I'd ask in the forums, but that would start another 11 page 300 post thread and I just don't want to be responsible for that more than once an off-season.

Edited to fix my lousy spelling

Yeah, I have low-ish arches, so I like a shoe with a little stability.  I tend to destroy lighter shoes really really quickly too.  I found my last pair od Trance on sale for like $70.  I'm trying to replicate that this year.

I had some Mizunos that I liked a couple years ago.  Might look into those also...
