Elite 5316![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alturas, California | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULLNah my VINEMAN is 2 1/2 months away and not nearly time to freek out about it yet so you are good. Hrm good swim goggles (springing for prescription ones this year), decent bike, the correct shoes, non-cotton technical socks, tri-outfit are all your basics. Waterproof windproof bike pants, jacket, gloves helmet cover are way necessary for those 30-40 F rides when it may rain or snow on you and extends the outdoor biking. Need the trainer for winter. Need the treadmill for winter. Need the wetsuit to extend the ows season. 45oz camelback allows for more interesting runs in the summer than just running around my block (4.5 miles). When it is cold/cool I can do the 13 mile run to town with no water, although it is nice to have, but when it is 90 F.... the 45oz is dry by the time I get to town. The one must have though is the really obnoxiously loud colored 60's towl to hang over the bar at tri's so I can find my bike! |

Definitely my Garmin Forerunner 305 I second that! I love my Garmin. Initially I didn't ues my HRM but now I use it religiously. Next step is to start downloading data, but really I just like the cool hill charts. |

Elite 5316![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alturas, California | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULLBrrrr bbrrr br. 2 mile ows in 50 F water at 5:45 am. I am at work and my feet are still numbish. Very pretty though, glass calm and I of course was the only one at the lake enjoying the water. Only took me 4-5 min to get my face chilled out enough to get into a comfortable stroke today. The T1 swim to work clothes tranition sucked though, numb fingers do not button dress shirts very efficiently. Open water does, however, make it esier to work on form. No wall every 30 seconds to make you reset what you are doing. |

Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULLOK geeks, I have a question for you: when running in the rain, will you intercept fewer raindrops if you run faster (less time in the rain), or is how wet you get a function of the distance run? They covered this on Car Talk one time, but I can't remember the answer. It's not a totally idle question - according to the most recent forecast, there's a 90% chance I'll be running 13.1 in the rain tomorrow, unless lightning forces them to call off the race. Your answers won't affect how I pace myself - I'm going to get soaked no matter what - but they will give me something to talk about with other runners at the start! |

Dreading the swim though as the water temps are still in the mid-50's.....Brrrr. I do feel a little better after just reading Steve's post about his 2 mi swim this morning in 50 degree water....way to go! |

Elite 5316![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alturas, California | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULLYou are really gona want to get in that water and get used to it on your face for like 5 minutes before your wave starts. 50's are cold enough that it takes quite a bit of willpower to put your face in and go freestyle unless you have already numbed out a bit and aclimated to the temp. Also letting it seep into your wetsuit and get some of that warmth into the rubber is key as you may be hyperventillating and thrashing for the first few minutes if you just walk down and in. Also... use a double swim cap or neo cap. I don't have a neo cap, but by doubling the regular swim cap you do get some insolation. Enjoy. |

Master 1209![]() ![]() ![]() New York, NY | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULLThanks for the tips! I definitely plan to get in the water and attempt to get acclimated and swim a couple meters to warm up. I'm hoping that I can get over the initial shock of the water when I warm up, so it'll be easier when the race starts. Some others have recommended a neo cap as well. I'm going to pick one up tonight....maybe I'll use it, maybe I won't....but I'd rather have it & not end up using it than be freezing tomorrow morning wishing that I got one. I do feel a little better after just reading Steve's post about his 2 mi swim this morning in 50 degree water....way to go! Good for you and happy racing!! Great tips about the cold water. Our first few OWS here are often with those temps (I should be doing OWS now but am waiting, waiting for higher temps!) -- and it takes me HOURS to warm up again afterward. Come back and write how it goes and HAVE FUN!! Great that you are getting out there and racing! I'm envious! Our first spring of the season is on 5/30 but I am out of town so can't race. |

I have been on the bike and swimming but feeling very antsy about putting the running shoes back on. I usually average high 16s or maybe low 17s on a good day. Bummer about the foot, hope you are on the mend shortly. I think that we do soo much as far as workouts go that if in our real life if we overdue it, there is not much margin in certain muscle groups. Waiting on those RR 8). Enjoy. low 50s is pretty cold. that's what the temp is when we do our new year's day swim in the bay. there are those from one of the swim clubs who swim w/o wetsuits, but I'm always in a wetsuit and neoprene cap if below 60. At 50, the exposed parts (face, feet) get numb for me. my jaw even gets numb and it's hard to talk afterward! Steve, you're just hardcore. No one will ever need to tell you to HTFU between your cold swims, windy rides, etc.! |

Wish I could say it's purely a pleasure trip, but the main reason is to see my father-in-law who is dying of leukemia. He is still living well (not in a hospice situation), although he is tired and lethargic. It will be a hard visit, particularly for my kiddos (ages 7 and 9) who are very angry, confused, upset, sad... they know the situation and why we are going. Happy training! |

Aside from sticking to my training plan my main goal, same as you, I need to be riding outside MORE!!! There's no reason I shouldn't be....the weather is nice, it's not getting dark until shortly before 8pm and I love riding outside. But sometimes (lately) my confidence riding on the road is really low. It's funny you say you feel intimidated by the country roads, bc being in the city I always wish I was riding on country roads!! It's only a mile ride to the park, and most times I'm fine but sometimes I just get so nervous which then kills my confidence. I do know though, the only way I'm going to get past this is by doing it more and more. |

Pam, glad to hear the race went well. Looking forward to the RR. to answer my previous QOTD: i find my garmin and my ipod very useful for training (don't use either during races). a race belt and yankz are great pieces of equipment for racing. I love my tri bike and yeah, a wetsuit is invaluable since swimming is my weakest discipline. |
