monicamm68 - 2010-01-17 12:42 PM How do you return to a running program after being injured for about a week? I have been told by my MD that I can run, but slowly. Should I just follow the 10% rule or can it be modified to accomodate training that was done prior to the injuries? I got a 14K next month and a half mary in March, both of which are scheduled for training runs anyway, but I still want to be able to do my best.

You do not want to reaggravate the injury, so you want to keep the mileage slower and comfortable, and slowly build up the mileage.   A week won't put your training off that much, but the key is not getting injured again, so you should be okay with the 10% rule, but you gotta totally listen to your body and not push it to hard.  Last March I found myself with a stress fracture on the head of my right fibula...6+weeks of no running.  However, I did bike and swim and I did aqua jogged. Didn't do tons of aqua jogging but, did some and it was NO JOKE.  So, that's an idea too if you want get some intensity in without actually pounding the pavement.

Should I go back to the mileage that I was on prior to injury (I know it wasn't much) and build 10% off of that?

Morning team! Still going strong over here.  I swam my furthest distance every this morning - you know as a straight swim.  The mind can wander alot.  This does boost some confidence my ability to complete a HIM in September but I still have doubts so there's no registering yet.

How was everyone else's weekend?

I would say give it a test run or two. Keeping it easy or on a treadmill so you can bail.  But if you didn't have high mileage you may just be able to pick up where you were. In a week you probably haven't lost much. They usually say you can start losing fitness after two weeks.  I would just keep it all easy running for a couple of weeks and then you can get back into anything more intense once you feel like you're in the clear.

Jen, you are always up and chipper and getting it going! I love it! Awesomeness!  9 month is A LOT until a HIM.  You can build up the swim and bike for that, you have the run, no issues there cause of the base...if you want it, you can do it!

Good, solid weekend for me.  Ended up with a pretty tough run yesterday in some gorgeous weather! It's the tough times that make us stronger!   Going on a recovery ride and swim today.  It's a federal holiday here in the US, so I get the day off.  It's excellent!

Finally caught up on all my swims.  Now hopefully the weather will be normal and I won't get behind again.  Good ride to and from the pool this morning with a nice swim to top it off.  Weekend was great and the even better news is that the weekend is not over with yet!!  Everybody enjoy MLK day!!

I agree with what Brit is saying.  The key is not injuring yourself again.  I'm coming off of 4 weeks of no running and my coach has me doing short easy runs mixed in with walks.  I'll do 10 minutes of brisk walking and then run 200 meters at an easy pace concentrating on form.  I follow that up with a minute of walking and then repeat the process 4 - 6 times.  I'm now up to running 800's and will be progressing into a mile later this week.  I did some aquajogging as well and it is tough.

The key is not to push hard when you come back and ease into it.

Nice job on the swim.  Your mind can for sure wander.  I sometimes have trouble remembering what lap I am on if I'm doing a long straight swim.  If you are going 2k meters in January you will have no problem with the HIM in September.

I took two days off in a row ,I can't remember the last time I did that. Not so much due to the foot issue as due to too much going on. Parents are in town, the marathon was this weekend, Sister and tons of friends ran it so I was there cheerleading! I had to work both days this weekend, moving into a new house this week, going out of town Sunday to Colorado for a surgery, have to get some insurance crud taken care of before that... gotta get some dentist work taken care of before that for the surgery next week... and a few other things.. so yea a little busy this week! It's all good though!

Gonna try to run tomorrow, but not expecting to go far.

I had to look it up, it's been 7 months since I've had two days of no exercising in a row. Basically the last time was when I had my last surgery in May.

Hey Team!  Things are going well here in cloudy and grey Michigan.  Today's swim was labeled a "recovery swim".  I felt pretty good with my first few laps and thought for a moment that it was all coming together.  As I tired, I lost my form.  But I think I am making progress.  My next 2 weeks are a bit of a mess.  I will probably miss 1 bike trainer ride and 1 swim.  Hopefully I will get in all my runs.  When your schedules get crazy how do you decide what workouts to cut?  Or am I just being a weenie by cutting back?

Good luck with the surgery.  Hopefully that won't have you off the training trail too long.

Keep at it in the pool and you will continue to make progress.  About 15 months ago I couldn't swim 50 meters without rolling over on my side.  I'm still not that good in the water but I made a lot of progress just by being persistant.

Well, I am no expert but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.

I usually dump my strength training from the plan first.  Last year, I was bad and tended to drop my running next, which is what I need to work on most so this year I'll be probably looking to cut back, but not eliminate, my biking and then swimming before I do my running.  In this group of great runners, I think I am the exception though.  I'm sure the more accomplished/experienced folks will have a much more scientific and rigorous way of going about these things.

Morning team!

I was up and at 'em early for some strength. I really like the core routines on this site. Anyway, will be up to a hilly run with a few repeats tonight.   I am happy with the schedule that i've put together from the winter maintenance program. I seem to be able to manage the am and pm workouts Mon-Thursday and then 3 workouts on the weekend. :D I do wish I was able to do more at lunch but running is the only thing that's feasible here ... and the winter and lack of hills around work just don't make it worth it right now. Oh well.

How is everyone?

Good morning everyone!  Back to work after a lovely 3-day weekend.  I"ve already done my swim, such as it was, I felt kind of tired today.  5 mile run this afternoon.  I'm just trying not to get sick!  My husband has had some flu-like crap for 11 days now, running a fever of 102-103+ the whole time, he is on his 3rd antibiotic.  The man who cannot sit still and has to find something to do, has been either laying in bed or laying in the recliner for 11 days!!!  My daughter started some kind of stomach virus yesterday, throwing up and poops, yikes... and here I sit with my stomach feeling a little queasy and praying I'm not getting it!!!

Busy week for me here... doctor appt this afternoon, and Thursday morning I have an IV treatment I get every 8 weeks (Remicade).  But the weather is promising to be glorious in the afternoons, so hoping to get some good bike time in this week.

Sorry to hear about the sick family - hoping you have super immunity and it doesn't get you! Though I am guessing you have to be mama-nurse.

If you've read my blog you've seen that my super immunity did not hold up for long... had the pukes yesterday and am still nursing a queasy tummy.  I don't know WHAT's up with hubby but I am getting really worried about him.  He said his fever was coming down, but wasn't gone yet, so I hope his temp is back to normal by the time I get home today.  He has lost tons of weight and he wasn't fat!  It's like living with an 80 year old man!!!  He lays sleeping in the recliner and hobbles to the bathroom every once in awhile... it has now been 12 days of this and he has hardly eaten anything.  He says he has no moisture in his mouth so he doesn't want to eat... that makes me think he's dehydrated.  I offered to say home today to take him to the doctor, but he doesn't "think" they will do anything more for him.  He has GOT to be feeling better soon... at least I haven't caught THAT!

I had laid my stuff out to take a run before school today, but thought maybe not.  I enjoyed the extra hour and a half of sleep and will hopefully get it in this afternoon.  Nice excuse to run nice and easy, right?!

Yo team! Sorry I've been absent, it's been an insane week. Heck, it's been an insane past 18 months.  Anyhow, not much bike or pool time for me this week, but that happens.  Trying to get some run miles in though.  I am off to West Point, NY for a conference tomorrow morning, so I may or may not be on much.  I hope to catch back up with things when I get back. I'll be back to TX on Sunday night, so hopeful for a solid week next week.  I've been having some difficulties sleeping at night, so that has not been helpful...throws everything off when you're used to 6.5-7 hours of sleep, but only get 2-3!

KEEP TRAINING!

Well, good morning team!

I have now been registered for the half for two days and generally am calm about it but have been over taken by excitement and panic at intervals. haha.

Things are good here. Just plugging away. Another high volume week for me. I have a run tonight and some rest on the docket for tomorrow.

hope everyone is well!
