gobey007 - 2011-10-06 5:06 PM Has anyone had any experiences with the shops listed on the B2B site??   Bike Cycles or Two Wheeler Dealer. I'm going to ship my bike and have little to go on besides how nice their website is   One is more expensive, does that mean experience and great service or just higher prices Wink

I rented race wheels and had them send to Two Wheeler Dealer. They have been really nice and responsive, for what that's worth.

Had a shifting issue in 2009 on the Friday before race day and hit Two Wheeler Dealer and they got my bike right in and had everything back in order real quick with no charge.  They were rather busy to and didn't hesitate to get my ride in the stand.

I seem to remember something about GPS tracking being available for B2B. Anyone know if this is true, and, if so, where more info can be found? I'd love to be able to have friends, family, and my students be able to track me during the race.

Just over three weeks to go - yikes!!!!

If I am not mistaken, wasn't there a small blurb about it in the athlete guide they sent out earlier this week?

I think that they mailed out a hard copy earlier this week.  The PDF version is online at http://www.beach2battleship.com/files/2011%20PPD%20B2B%20ATHLETE%20EVENT%20BOOKLET.pdf.  Last year the PDF was exactly the same as the hard copy and I expect that is also the case this year.

It will have athlete tracking, not GPS tracking.

From the website:

Will this event have live tracking of athletes for family members to view status on-line?
YES. The 2011 edition of PPD B2B will have live instant and searchable results. The web link for these results will be posted here closer to the event so you may share with your friends and family.

From the Athlete's Guide:

Preliminary results of each split will also be posted on-line throughout the day so loved ones can follow
your performance. These times will be live times and a link will be provided closer to the event. But you
can always send loved ones to www.Beach2Battleship.com to find the live timing. They will need to know
your bib number to follow you.

That being said, since "Event times will be provided on site for all five splits:  Swim, T1, Bike, T2, and Run" I'm not sure how useful this information is to spectators that are on-site.  I mean, if it had splits at the run turnaround or bike special needs, that might be more helpful to my husband.  As it is, I think that he is going to go with my time guesstimates which could be off by a lot (he did not seem interested in other solutions like myathletegps or Garmin GTU 10).

75.6    good guess huh

Excellent guess!  And good confirmation that the data on the station makes sense ;-)

PeakTriCoaching - 2011-10-06 11:07 AM Sorry, I should add in that your run off the bike after your long ride should be at race pace, this should be a very EASY pace!  Way too many people go out too hard at the beginning of IM runs and end of really paying for it.  For some people, this is a great opportunity to practice slowing way down for those first few miles of the race.

+1

After 20+mph ride I have no feel for proper run pace.  In training R:W is best way I can consistently control my pace right off the bike.

It can be very challenging, but that's terrific that you're using the run-walk method!  I'm a huge advocate of this method, especially for IM's.  However, it does need to be practice.  I use it in all my training runs over 30 minutes.

I currently use R:W for all my training runs >1hr.  But in doing my 1st (don't laugh) sub-2hr HM this spring I ran the whole way (inc aid stations).

I plan to R:W 4:1 @ B2B.  I walk whenever the minute digit hits '4' or '9', and start running every '5' or '0'.  Simple enough for even the bonked brain to follow Tongue out

BTW- Water temp 75.6 seems warm to me.  Will it really drop ~10F over the next 3 weeks?

No the water temp won't drop 10 degrees, another guess would have around 68 for race day . I will try and swim the course easy the week before the race and let you know. Water temp should not be an issue. We are having nice warm days and cool nights at this time.I also will use a R/w... Just not as scientific18 miles today in 3:13 about race pace

How is the sun in NC this time of year?  Do we need to worry about sunscreen or is the sun too low to have an effect?

The race was in Nov last year. I sprayed on some sunscreen at bike special needs, and still got a bit pink on the shoulders. Then again, I was out there longer than most....

You shouldn't have too much of an issue. But I think it depend more upon if there are any trees covering the roads or if we are exposed to the sun the whole time.

I am about as fair skinned as one could be and I don't wear any sunscreen on my training rides now.

Did my last long run this AM (20.1mi in 3:29 @ approx IM pace using planned run:walk).   After yesterday's hard group ride the legs felt pretty crappy @ start, but improved as the miles went by to run last 3 in 9's (inc 8:09 last mi).  Feel good this afternoon.

Wilmington here we come Smile

Kind of a lost weekend, training-wise - Out of town weddings will do that to you but at my age, weddings among my peers are kind of few and far between. In a way, glad to have an excuse to not go riding...

Which means I have to decide if I'm going to go with what I've got right now and ditch this coming week's long training weekend. My legs have been kind of sluggish the last few times out but I've always gone with a two week taper before. The hay's in the barn but I'm still feeling kind of restless...

I get the feeling most folks here are planning lighter weeks until 10/29 - anyone doing anything ambitious in the next few days?

Well, I ruptured a ligament in the bottom of my foot, where the toe connects to the foot, so I won't be doing much "work" to say the least.

Doc wanted me on crutches or in a walking boot for 3-6 weeks, but, needless to say, that's not happening.

Going to be tough to race, let alone to meet the goals that I have been training for.  Hurts to walk, but we shall see.  I think I'm going to call my family doc today and try to get in to inquire about cortisone or steroid injection.

We'll see...

Really sorry to hear that. Stuff can heal to a surprising extent in three weeks and I would not worry in the least if you can't train between now and race day. Good luck at the doc's.

Really sorry to hear about that, man.  Tough break this close to the race.

I'm with alltom1 -- don't sweat it if you choose not to train.  Letting that puppy heal as much as possible is not a bad idea.  If you do work out, though, you might stick to swimming and riding.

Whatever you decide, best of luck.  You'll truly earn the "Ironman" title this time around.

In my last few days of 'long' training - then easier for the rest of the time before the race.

Saturday was 108 miles on the bike with 8,000+ feet of climbing (just a tad more than the bike course @ B2B!!). Today was a 3800 yard OWS + 40 miles on the bike. Tomorrow is an 18 mile run. Then the taper begins.

Looking forward to my first 'IM' Laughing

sorry to heard that

Think about to run/walk with a boot like the girl in Ironman 2010 broadcast!

Also, don't be foolish and try to "race" with that injure instead be smart and think about how many more races you have in your future.

Good luck and make the best of what you have!!!!!!

IMO You still can do it

This will be my first IM with a salt water swim. Anyone factor that into your sodium plan as far as nutrition is concerned for the early parts of the race?

The first time that I did a saltwater swim, I needed to eat something ASAP to get the salt taste out of my mouth.  After that, I didn't feel like I needed it but I had it in my plan.  So... have a gel or something available to get the salt taste out if needed.  Also, they will have showers (no worries! warm water!) at SeaPath to rinse the salt off.
